WTA week of 4/4; Charleston 500 & Bogota 250

Qualifiers are in.

FPdA-RiXEAoSsmb

Linda over Konjuh in 3, Kalinina beat Sasnovich.

Cornet with the fun scoreline of 6-0, 0-3 now.

Zheng has decent first serves when she's gets them in, but made a few DF. Sloane not looking sharp, lots of wild FH/BH missing by a mile. Zheng groundies is much more solid than Sloane.

Sloane down 3 breaks at 0-5!

Some 22-year old Ukranian named Zavatska takes the first over Karolina.

Looks like her last main draw match was February '21 in Portoroz.

They're trying to finish quickly now.

Due to severe inclement weather, including the threat of a possible tornado, the Credit One Charleston Open will cancel its night session on Tuesday, April 5.

An informational screen on the tv said 22-year old Zavatska has career earnings of a little over $500,000. She only has 28 matches total on the WTA Tour, so I guess it's possible to make close to $100,000 a year on the ITF? Is that typical?

Zavatska served for the match against KP @ 5-4 in the second, was broken, then all over after that.

Aryna serving @ 5-3 in the first against Riske now.

Linda Fruhvirtova, the up-and-coming teenage lost in straight set to Bencic 6-1,7-6.

Good effort, but lots of room for improvement from serves, returns, etc. That's a decent result for #188 vs #21.

I'm the rare fan of both, but I'll pick Aryna to win simply because she needs to get on a little run at some point.

Vandeweghe is ranked in the #166 and is 30 years old! In 2017, she’s was the Keys and Stephens for the USTA, big up and comer, toted top 10! Looks like she was hurt, had mental problems and lost her tennis game. She finally got back to tennis in the ITF where she made it to Semis of a $60K tournament, lost 1st rd. in AO. This is a big move for Vandeweghe, a rd. 16 in a level WTA 500.

Vandeweghe plays Pegula #13 rank!

Coco is interesting weird. She’s gone through some tough times, including losing a pinky finger to some weird disease. She’s always been arrogant, spunky type who thought she was better than she really was because of her success in doubles.
I do feel for these mid to late 20’s, even early 30’s who really hanging on and try to make another run up the ladder… or chasing past glory when they should just pack it in and retire. Top level Players like Pliskova, Kerberos, Kvitova, Venus, to middling like Linette, Coco, Kanepi… they are all financially secured. I will root for them, because Old Peeps…. but just stop one day already!
