WTA week of 4/5; Charleston 500 & Bogota 250

I’m happy and relieved that the Bogota tournament has manage to survive over the years and avoid cancellation / relocation, especially with it being the only WTA tour event in South America, and with tournaments in Brazil and Chile coming and going quickly (I believe that Buenos Aires will host a 125 challenger event in November).

Also with hard court events becoming so dominant on the tour, I’m at the stage where I cherish any events held on other surfaces. I think it’s a shame that Charleston is the only har-tru event left (I used to like the Amelia Island - Charleston double header). Give me har-tru over a slow hard court for sure.

I saw that Lara Arruabarrena double bagelled both of her opponents in the Bogota qualifying draw.

Pera was leading 6-4 4-2, but (predictably) ended up losing to Cornet in nearly 3 hours.

Pera is one of the best in the business at failing to hold on to leads. I believe that an English language version of Cornet's book covering her life on the tour (currently available in French) will be released soon. That could be an interesting read.

Coco beats Pironkova 6-3 6-0. I didn't look at the serve speed, but it looked pretty fast. Eager to see how she develops in the coming years.

The 1st round 'battle of the Saras' in Bogota sounded pretty hilarious. SST has had a busy schedule recently, so I didn't think she'd have much left in the tank, and she to recharge her batteries ahead of the European clay events.

Leylah Fernandez is not looking like a very good tennis player. Can she turn it around? She’s a promising talent...

It’s safe to say Leylah Fernandez will not be contending for any majors if she doesn’t learn how to serve. Horrible.

Lauren Davis pull an big upset with a 3 set win over Kenin! Way to go. Now, keep it rolling for the second round and beyond! Many of these higher rank players cannot keep it rolling on to subsequent rounds like the top player can with the exception of Kenin. Kenin not doing well in 2021 so far.
