WTA week of 4/5; Charleston 500 & Bogota 250

With the draw as it is, I would have said Barty has this tourney in the bag, but given the neverending number of upsets, nothing is coming easy for the favored players.

8 wins in a row for Barty now.

Faces Badosa in the QF.

We could get a Barty v Sloane SF. The pair have only played once which was in the 3R of the US Open in 2017. Sloane won that match and went on to win the tournament too.

Barty extending her lead as #1, now 1,300 points clear of Osaka. If Ash won the title she’d be 1,670 points ahead. Pretty comfortable position considering her French Open points will be coming off soon.

Are you saying she will not be able to defend her FO points?

Hopefully not. I love Barty but Sloane, Garbine, Iga and Simona are better clay player.
Sloane? Really? She went 1-3 on clay last year losing in her opening match in Rome and Strasbourg and then losing 2R at the French Open.
Muguruza has been solid but hasn’t made a final on clay since she won the French Open 5 years ago back in 2016.

yes really. Sloane is capable of beat everyone on clay with the caveat of losing to anyone as well lol.

If you wanna bring record, Barty isn't impressive either appart from her FO win. She's solid player but I wouldn't say she's top active clay player.

Anyway, how is Kvitova lost to Kovinic who got double bagelled in AO by Barty lol.

Barty is definitely one of the top active clay players hence her RG win. She didn't have a chance to defend RG last year so I'd love to see Barty v Swiatek in the latter rounds if possible. I'm really intrigued by this year's RG as we have players like Muguruza actually being consistent, hopefully Halep finds form alongside the likes of Serena, Azarenka fingers crossed Osaka finds her feet and can get to R4 or the QF at least.

Agree about Sloane too when she plays peak tennis which hasn't happened for years. I would absolutely love a Sloane resurgence as I feel something has been going on in the background for her to be so unmotivated. Of course, this could also be a 1 week in form performance as she's in the US and likes the tournament a lot, but I can only hope!

The QF line-up at Bogota is pretty hilarious:

#127 Vogele vs. #180 Osorio Serrano (WC)
#190 Tan (Q) vs. #167 Arruabarrena (Q)
#146 Tomova vs. #171 Parrizas Diaz (Q)
# 93 Zidansek vs. #112 Errani

Zidansk is the only seeded player left. Obviously current WTA rankings can sometimes be misleading and not tell the full story, with Errani a former grand slam finalist and top 10 player, a Osorio Serrano a pretty highly rated teenager in her home tournament, and Arruabuena's strong track record there. But still talk about 'epic' !

As I alluded to in a previous post, I'm basically a 'fanboy' of this tournament purely due to it being the only WTA level one to be held in South America. I would hate to see it being relocated to Europe - it's already brutally difficult for South American players (and women far more so then men due to lower levels of support received) to progress, establish themselves at WTA level, have opportunities to play in their home continent (though South America is absolutely huge) as it is.

^^is Bogata a challenger level tourmanment ? field is so weak

A WTA tournament since 1998 (given how many long-standing WTA events have been discontinued over the years, it might be one of the longest-standing ones left), albeit one of the weaker ones given that women's tennis has never really had the depth of well known / talented South American players or 'clay court specialists' that men's tennis used to have (but not so much nowadays) in previous eras. The fact that it has survived all this time has been a pleasant surprise !

Jankovic playing there a couple of times, winning the title one year and finishing as the runner-up the next, was a big deal. In 2014, Acapulco switched from clay to hard, this event moved from February to April, and it become more 'isolated'.

Who's jankovic ?? i thnk bradley klahn beat her badly in practice

should i buy some houses from her ?
I think her cheapest property she has for sale is around $40 million. She sell to people who know her from her tennis career. I guess if you looking to buy a house in southern California and are a fan of hers, it is a very trust full pick since you watch her for years on the tour already. She is her own brand and is famous for real estate now!

which property is that ? it's expensive even for So Cal. i was thinking more like $1-1.5 million dollar house.

I watch Danke in a previous tournament and she was impressive but was ranked like in the 140s. Now she gone up to 97! Big, big move in such short time period of a few months.
