WTA week of 5/19; Strasbourg 500 & Rabat 250

Could be Keys vs Sabalenka in the R4 of RG. Only other notable players in that 1/8 are Stephens and Badosa and both are hard to predict but Sabalenka seems so clutch nowadays especially at 1000 and majors.

Keys is 29 now. Many players have won their first major on the WTA side at this point in their career. She's never seemingly been able to reign in her power when it matters. A slight bit of tightness and she's a loose canon. I wouldn't hate seeing her win a major but ideally some consistent form before/after would be nice so it's not just a straight up flash in the pan. I doubt this will happen, but as you said she can take anyone out on her day. There are 3-4 players I still think would have a game to find a way past her even when she's red hot.
Her and Pliskova. Can never be written off if they’re playing on fire but just the most inconsistent players. Sloane is another but she got her slam, ironically enough by beating Keys.

I think Pliskova has Svitolina in R1. I'd back Svitolina there as I don't recall Pliskova doing much at RG recently whereas Svitolina seems to maintain a fairly high level on clay. Having said that, I thought Svitolina would have done more this season but she seems to have dropped off since Wimbledon/USO of 2023.

Sloane will do extremely well to get past Putintseva as she lost to her a few weeks ago. Sloane at RG is not Sloane anywhere else, I think she will fight more to go deep here but players like Putintseva can just wear you out. R3 against Sabalenka is also on the cards and with Sabalenka's consistency nowadays at majors I only see that going one way, but I think Sloane put up a fight against her last RG at least. I don't see Stephens playing more than 2-3 more seasons maximum. I think she wants to go and enjoy life just like Muguruza has. Unless a US player is injured for the Olympics I don't see her qualifying to play the Olympics at RG which is a shame given she's actually a good clay courter.

Collins up to #10 in the world rankings and Keys up to #12 (career high was #7). Collins herself only about 500 points off her previous career high of #7 too, and if her momentum continues I can see her surpassing #7 this year.

Plishy came real close at RG in 2017 losing to Halep in the SF in a 3 set battle. That’s the one that Halep then choked the final to Ostapenko leading 6-4 3-0. Svitolina meanwhile has actually never gone past the QF but she’s made it a number of times, also including 2017 where she led Halep 6-3 5-1 but ended up losing the match.

That French Open is just my favourite because everything about it was insane. Svitolina massively chokes to Halep QF, Pliskova blows it against Halep in the SF, Halep then blows it to Ostapenko in the final. Ostapenko herself was only there because Stosur got injured after thrashing her 6-1 in the first set of the 4R. Just the most insane slam.
