Now time for the big one. Venus v Barty.

Feels crazy saying this but I’m giving the edge to Venus. Got nothing to lose, got some match play on the grass as she wanted. Barty going for the #1 ranking now as well as the title with Osaka out and Venus is her biggest challenge in getting them both.

Really hoping so but Venus is just a big step up. Barty hasn’t played a slam champion since Halep way back in Madrid.

It’ll be closer I think. I just don’t want the nonsense of people slamming Ash for losing to Venus.

Anybody who would doesn’t know tennis. Venus loves the grass and can still play with the best on many days

Barty has such great ball control and such a nice slice

and then with Venus being a shell of her former self with limited movement

I think Barty probably gets past Queen V.

if Venus can pressure Barty's 2 handed BH, she may have a good chance, but Barty's slice can mitigate Venus' power, so we'll see...

Barty looks awful
She's obviously a good player, but I've really never gotten the sense that she's good enough to beat the best consistently. Although not many of the girls today are...

I can't watch the match at the moment, but what seems to be the issue?

Just wasn’t looking sharp. She’s getting better now

Muguruza, Bouchard, Keys, Konta, Kasatkina . . . Stosur before all that . . . I thought I was done with it many times . . .
Admirable.

But I fear that you may be going about it all wrong.

I'll say this: volume is key.

Crank it. :)

Is Barty becoming the new Hewitt?
Appearing during a time where there's no dominant force in the game (between the fall of a previous generation of greats and while the next generation of dominant players is yet to make its mark), taking her chances when they present themselves?

I didn't realize Barty was so close, that's amazing.

Sharapova down to #80 in the rankings, one behind G. Bouchard and four behind Zvonareva.

If Barty wins Birmingham, she'll take over #1 from Osaka.
And I see her has the strong favorite to do so!

How did you guys miss it? We've been saying it on the thread

Barty just three matches from the #1 ranking.

Faces the winner of Venus/Wang then the winner of Strycova/Kristyna Pliskova and then possibly Poots, Rodina, Gorges, Martic or Ostapenko in the final.

Have to say Venus is the toughest on paper. No top 10 player in her way for the #1 spot.

Barty now just one win away from her 4th singles final of 2019 and two wins from her 3rd title of the year and the #1 ranking

Also just one win away from her 2nd doubles final of 2019 and 2nd title (this time partnering Gorges).

She could leave Birmingham as #1 in singles and will leave as #7 in doubles.

Crazy.
