WTA week of 6/19; Berlin 500 & Birmingham 250

wow queen venus won? amazing, didnt know shes still on tour lol, looked up a bit and it was a big coef on her, 4/1

Highlights of today :D

Most likely next opponent will be Osty. Who can also bash the ball 80% to the fence. If VW can drag herself to the court after this 3+ hours round.

Let’s hope for this lol

Even if she loses or is even too tired to play, she did everything I needed her to do today. Grit, heart, determination, excellence.

Wow that block dink return from georgi in the last TB. Some dumb luck. Glad Venus didn’t hurt herself!

Wow epic win from Venus, beating a hard hitting Camila giorgi in a 3 set 3+ hour slugfest at this stage of her career is quite a feat.

Seriously bc Camilla was hitting SO HARD. It was ridiculous.
At one point in the first set Venus Williams slipped and fell to lose a point. Surprisingly, Camila giorgis reaction was to fist pump and yell come on. Don't think she did the usual inquire/thumbs up if ok gesture either. Comms even talked about it.
Not a big deal in the big picture as CG's known to be a tough competitor on the court, but it's a departure from the usual etiquette nonetheless.

It was really weird, Venus was already down like 4 seconds

Boulter lost, 5 & 5.

Jelena with one of her special scorelines, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 in 102 minutes over Noskova.

Ons and Kasatkina lost. Such crap.
Agreed on Ons, but totally disagree with Kasatkina. She is about the worst top 10 player during the times I have followed WTA and it's always good anybody kicks her in the rankings she really belong to. And now it was even the amazing 'Miss Armenia', Avanesyan that beat her! That brightens my day after was fed with mouthful of ****e yesterday with ****nus' "victory". (n)

Yes, Kasat is not a great player in traditional means. She’s a fetcher in the highest order. With a 60+ mph 1st server she’s constantly asking for a beat down, but due to her tenacity and fitness, she barely gets blown out. And I like her personality. She’s always bubbly and giggling when I see her off the courts. (I’m a gluten for punishment in that I even subscribed to her and her girlfriend’s YouTube channel).

Gross scream from Camilla way after Venus was down
What? Why? What about the gross time wasting by Venus? I mean, was it an official match, or an exhibition? Venus goes down 0-30 on her serve, and promptly takes about 2 minutes to fix her hair. Not a PEEP from the chair umpire (who was waiting WAY too long to start the serve clock for Venus, despite there being no crowd noise). By the rules, Venus would have lost multiple points for repeatedly time violations.

Then you get all the ridiculous acting and nonsense. Is Venus best friends with Djokovic or something? She moves around between points like she is 65 years old, not 43, and seems completely injured and lifeless... until the ball is in play and then everything is magically fine...

Point is, Giorgi was sick of her nonsense, INCLUDING the ridiculous scream when she fell down. Even if Giorgi missed that ball, it should have been a hinderance.
Yes. Both hit the ball well. Venus with a bad knee hung in there. Heart of a Champion.
Cool story, bro.

Giorgi hits hard, but generally down the middle until she decides to go for it, at which point it is either a winner or an error. Saw that Giorgi actually won more points, but obviously lost the match. Venus did enough to return the balls hit at her (not exactly easy on grass), and Venus obviously served much better.

First off, she said, "allez," not si. Second, I laughed out loud, as it was a deliberate and great moment. Giorgi pretty much never makes a peep during a match, and she would never have even reacted for a point like that, but she was clearly trying to tell Venus that she was sick of the BS. All the drama and time wasting up to that point, and Giorgi let her know what she thought about it. End of.

Kasatkina is a top 10 player for sure. When she's on she can beat anyone. Her only problem is her serve.

Thanks for the good therapy session lol

Cheering when someone falls down is one of the ugliest things in tennis to do as an opponent and if you think that's acceptable then that reflects on you. Giorgi is a nasty player, a cheat and we all now know about what her and her family did during Covid. She is trash while Venus is pure class.

Looking back on who she played during that Wimbledon 2017 final run is pretty cool.

R1: Mertens. Elise would go on to make the AO SF 7 months later and become the constant top 30 Mertens we've seen ever seen.
R2: Wang. Another player who went on to have a big season the following year and eventually became a top 15 player too.
R3: Osaka. Yet another one who's following year was epic which included winning Indian Wells and the USO.
R4: #27 Konjuh.
QF: #13 Ostapenko. Jelena had just won the French Open but that was no stress for Venus.
SF: #6 Konta. Jo was the hometown favourite, Miami champ and was coming off a good grass season too.

But not to be as Muguruza got it done in the final.

Exactly that draw was crazy I wish she got it done. The crowd was CRAZY for Konta.

Great first set in the final as well but the second set just yeah, all had taken a toll.

The 2017 Wimbledon final isn't the one that hurts me the most for Venus, it was the 2017 US Open SF loss to Sloane. Venus should have won that and then had the absolute dream of facing the biggest choker in a slam final - Madison Keys.

And she should have won the Tour Finals as she had NEVER lost to Wozniacki lol. Man 2017 is bittersweet. She had epic kits all year too.

The singles players (Kasatkina/Lisicki) are giving the career doubles players lots of challenge and winning over them. Won in 3rd set TB against the Kato/Sutjiadi. Both Kasatkina and Lisicki lost in 1st round In singles.

Getting a lot more common now for these singles player to sign up for doubles.

Ha, what? Can you squeeze any more ridiculous and unfounded statements into a single comment? Cheering when another player falls is indeed ugly, but that's not what went on here. Context matters. Venus had been trying every trick in the book up until that point, and it was simply Giorgi's way of saying she wasn't going to fall for it. And, in hindsight, we know that Giorgi was right.

Calling Giorgi a "nasty player"? Are you kidding me? She is one of the most respectful players on tour. She doesn't make a peep when she hits the ball (and she hits hard), but more importantly she NEVER let's out obnoxious "come ons," or has any ridiculous celebrations when she wins a point. Heck, she barely does a fist pump when she wins most matches. That's how you know she was deliberately calling Venus out on her BS. She would never let out an "allez" after a point like that.

Likewise, Giorgi never takes ridiculous MTO's, or creates any unnecessary drama during her matches. She just shuts up and plays tennis, and never bothers with any "head games" or nonsense like that.

As for the supposed COVID story, no, we don't all know what she did, because nothing has been substantiated. So far it's nothing but some baseless accusations by association, and her comments on the matter have made that clear. So the only "nasty" person in here is you, who seems to have some sort of personal issue with Giorgi. And it seems like you aren't the only one. Wonder why that is?

Who‘s the big Linda F. fan around here? She’s still playing.

And this Emina Bektas cat is having a helluva two weeks.

Tennis is funny.

Avanesyan loses in qualifying to Siegemund. Siegemund qualifies and loses to Blinkova R1. Blinkova makes the 2R and loses to Avanesyan who got in as a lucky loser and defeated top 10 Kasatkina in the 1R.

Berlin is salty Thursday.
