We may set a new record for withdrawals/retirements this week. Have we had two 500s right before a Slam?

Bad Homburg draw

Badosa/Yastremska/Navarro/Tomova/Alexandrova/Vekic have already won. Vika & Kalinskaya withdrew.

Eastbourne draw

28-player field, Rybakina/Pegula/Paolini/Keys have byes. Ajla is out.

Bianca v. Blinkova this morning in Germany.

Sorana v. Kalinina & Dart v. Bouzkova in England today.

Two 500s the week before a slam is insanely stupid. We already saw a billion withdrawals mid tournament last week, I think this is gonna be bad…

Good luck to the tournament directors on that.

Mr. Negative again. Eastbourne champ wins $142, 000 and lots of grass time. Doesn't seem stupid to me.

Are you thick? I guess everyone withdrew last week for no reason? Not one. Not two. Not three. FOUR top 10 players withdrew mid tournament last week.

Jabeur

Sabalenka

Vondrousova

Rybakina.

4 all in the same week. What do you make of that? Mr negative? Open your eyes.

Look at the Berlin results last week and see that half the top 8 seeds all retired.

But I’m mr negative about this week? Get a grip @Bill Lobsalot

They don’t care about a cash prize of $142,000. Look what they did last week.

You do like to argue. You can never have a civil discussion. There's 96 other players in the top 100 who would like to make a living.

The Dart/Bouzkova match is an absolute marathon, but neither will be expecting 2 weeks at Wimbledon so no biggie.

Bouzkova already won an epic against Heather Watson last week. Pest.

Like to argue? You were rude and I quoted you. Now here’s mine for you babe, how many top 10 players withdrew from Berlin last week? Find me a time where not one, not two, not three but FOUR top 10 players all retired in one tournament in three days the week before a slam and tell me that’s not weird?

Bet you can’t.

Answer the question. You made it about money but can’t admit the fact FOUR top 10 players withdrew. When did that happen last?
They're smaller tournament, people withdraw all the time. I'm not interested in stats about withdrawals and such. You can't deny the lower ranked players to make a living. There's good crowds enjoying tennis.
They're not "stupid" tournaments as you called them.

Maybe you misunderstood and that’s on you, I didn’t call the tournaments stupid. I said the scheduling having two 500s the week before a slam was stupid. Especially when we’ve seen not one, not two, not three, but four top 10 players withdraw from ONE tournament in Berlin. Something you still haven’t admitted happened. Can you do that yet? :)

That’s pretty poor scheduling no? Or you think that was cute? Jabeur retired. Sabalenka retired. Vondrousova retires. Good look for the tournament director?

I like to think it's just one of those weird things. Sabalenka has never previously pulled out of an event, and has an impeccably clean injury record in general.

Rybakina and Jabeur have been getting more prone to illness/injury as time goes by (although in Ons' case she's heading for her 30s), so neither of those two surprise me.

I've already forgotten who the other one was. As disappointing as it would have been for the Berlin crowd, these things happen. It will happen even more if we move to 10 Masters.

I remember Federer and Nadal pulling out of their Paris quarter finals once on the same day. That would have been a bummer at the time. It happens.

You're a weird dude. I'm gonna ignore you like the rest of the wiser people on these WTA threads do. Bye.

Sofia Kenin who got destroyed in qualifying 6-1 6-0 by Golubic gets a R1 bye as a lucky loser thanks to the late minute withdrawal of Rybakina as the top seed. How good hey Bill.

I may be weird but I can call crap out when I see it.

Also Sloane v Raducanu is always just a crazy 1R.

2017 surprise US Open champ v 2021 surprise US Open champ.
Who will have had the better career once they have retired? Sloane has 8 WTA titles including the USO and Miami, plus RU at RG.

Would the WTA grass swing benefit from a 500 the week after RG? Not sure why Eastbourne and Bad Homburg both need to be 500s. Making Nottingham or something other event a 500 would bring the players to the grass sooner as that first week is often so weak with players resting after clay. I know Nottingham may not have the facilities to host a 500 but another venue could perhaps. This feels like it's been a particularly short lead up to Wimbledon. Finally there is nice weather but the first week or so it was certainly disruptive.

It's all changing next year (for the worse, IMO). They're taking 500 status off Eastbourne and replacing it with a London based 500 earlier on the swing. Eastbourne will still be the week before Wimbledon but relegated to a 250.

I'm not a fan. I think London already has enough of the prime tennis. Plus, Eastbourne has fantastic facilities and great history. I presume Nottingham and Birmingham are staying as they are.

I've just had a look at the schedule for next year.
Week 1 is Queen's 500 and S'Hertogenbosch 250
Week 2 is Berlin 500 and Nottingham 250
Week 3 is Bad Homburg 500 and Eastbourne 250

Now I don't know how players approach short haul travel but I wonder how many will want to stay in England once they play Queen's and just travel normally to Nottingham for instance and then on to Eastbourne? Not sure if top players will just target to 500s or if convenience will be a factor. I'm glad the grass season starts with a 500 next year and not 2x 250s. It will be good to see the top players on grass earlier potentially. Nottingham will also likely be a lot harder for Boulter to defend with it being on the middle of the grass season. She did well this year to defend but her match ups the last 2 years haven't really been that tough and she benefits massively from home support and familiarity with grass. I've noticed Birmingham has been kicked off the tour also - that's a major shame as it's been an event for so long and has had many a GS winner win the title there.

Just watching some of the Raducanu - Stephens match from earlier. Not really sure what to take from it. Raducanu played well enough but Stephens looks low energy and motivation after losing the tight 1st set. Really looks like Stephens is flat footed around the court and only Raducanu was competing.

WTA will have an event at Queens next year? Looks like the men are scheduled to play the week after, guess the grass will be pretty beaten up when that event starts. Weird they don't just have them play the same week.

Some interesting matches in the Last 16. I didn't give Dart a prayer against Rybakina but that's been changed to Kenin now. Dart might have a shot there.

Raducanu and Pegula could be a cracker. How invested will Pegula be after winning last week? Raducanu looks like she enjoys the conditions. She's only 6/5 to get that elusive first 'official' win against a top 10 player.

Dare I say Boulter is the least likely to win her match of the three? Bookies call it even but I always feel like Ostapenko will come out and smash 50 winners on any given day. We'll see.

Wait, I'm honestly not sure what point you are trying to make? Are you implying they should be 250's and not 500's? Because, if anything, the extra points and money of a 500 should be incentive for more top players to enter the tournament and stay in the draw. So what is the problem?

If anything, I think it's silly because the week before a slam is often strange, and so giving out so many points in depleted events feels a little cheap. Like some random player could get a significant rankings boost (Harriet Dart, for example), just by hanging around and getting lucky in a pre-slam event. Not great.

But, as Bill said, it's good to let non-top players have a chance at solid prize money. I see no issue with that, and obviously there are enough venues that want to hold grass court events that the calendar is packed. Top players being divas isn't particularly new in this day and age, where those at the very top make so much more money than those below them.

I don’t see my girl. Thought she’s back at Eastbourne?
Nvm, see her.
Who is your girl? I forgot.

That is VERY Sloane Stephens. Sometimes she just completely checks out, to the point of embarrassment. Last year she played Giorgi in the semifinals of some small event in Mexico (a Sunshine Double warm up), and it was frankly ridiculous. I watched every ball, because it was Camila the Queen of tennis, but otherwise would have definitely turned it off. At one point Giorgi was openly laughing at Stephens, which is totally out of character for Giorgi (to show any emotion at all), but it was that pathetic.

Only a more positive note, Stephens and Hsieh won their doubles match today against Wang Xiyu and Wang Yafan.

I'm presuming this is a temporary partnership with Mertens electing to play singles this week.
