WTA week of 6/25; Eastbourne 500 & Bad Homburg 250

Always love seeing Petra doing well and would love her to nab another slam. But she has a bad habit of showing up a week or two before Wimbledon only to fail at the slam.
I thought this too, she definitely will gone in 2R. Her type of game is not something that last consecutive matches.

I just checked she did have 2 14 matches winning streaks. We'll see if she can broke these curses.

I admit that I have been watching more Wimbledon qualifying matches than Eastbourne and Bad Homburg so far this week, but I am interested to see if Penko can win a second consecutive title.

Leylah is out.
Ever since Fernandez's U.S. Open final run, I've been hoping to see her reach a top 20 level. Unfortunately, that run may have been a fluke. Since then, her slam results have been 1R, QF, 2R, 2R, 2R. In her 11 1000-level events after that USO, she has only made it past the 2nd round twice, reaching the 3rd and 4th rounds of Indian Wells.

In Eastboourne, I hope whoever wins between Kasatkina and Garcia takes the title.

Where are you located, and where are you watching it? Is it on ESPN in the USA?
Nine years is funny.
Loved watching Giorgi smack Jabeur around today. Ons seems really fun off the court, and I want to like/root for her, but sometimes she seems so arrogant on court, and her attitude can also be really bad. Plus, I think so many players dislike Giorgi because she is so cute.

And Camila's legs aren't just good for looking at! She showed some serious speed and quickness getting to a few drop shots. I was very impressed.

That US Open final was pretty much a joke. Both Fernandez and Raducanu absolutely took advantage of some mentally weak players that should have beaten them, but couldn't handle the idea of seeing their big shot at a slam ruined by a nobody (Sakari, Bencic, Sabalenka, Svitolina).

What's the O/U on UEs in the Jelena/Camila match?
Giorgi actually had a very reasonable UE count against Jabeur, especially if you take out her usual slew of double faults. Giorgi was hitting better yesterday than I've seen her in a while. Just crushing the ball consistently (and it was even pretty windy).

BTW, Pegula looks like she is trying to do her buddy Coco a favor and start getting ready for Wimbledon. She is absolutely tanking.

Frenchie Frenchie is so frustrating to watch. At least with Sakkari she tries all the time. Garcia is such a rhythm player, if she’s not in, she absolutely swings to the fences.

Kasatkina even had an ace on her.

Siniakova/Samsonova playing 3 in Bad Homburg to close the day.

Edit: Darkness suspends this one.

Indeed looked like it. That would be so messed up.
I didn't want to say that much at that point in the match, but I'm having a hard time believing she didn't lose on purpose. Wimbledon coming up and playing against her good friend Gauff, it seems "logical," and she was absolutely awful. Pegula is known for being consistent, and she is top 10 right now, and she looked inexplicably bad. From 3-0 up in the second, to losing it 3-6, she was missing easy shots and playing super easy volleys back to Gauff when she came up to the net. Basically making a mockery of the sport.

Oh, and she gave up. Quit. :X3:
Yep. But I'd honestly rather see them fake or exaggerate an injury than just blow points on purpose and pretend to try.

She served for the set twice in the breaker, highly doubt she would have quit if she took it.

Oh well, on to Wimbly. Camila needs the $ more anyway.

JPeg is out of doubles with a back injury now.
Not surprised. She just didn't want anything more to do with this tournament, and wants to head to Wimbledon. Clearly tanked the Gauff match. What's sad is that Coco didn't even seem to realize it.

Little Camila takes the opening breaker at 8, then Jelena quits.
That was rather weak.
Yeah, Ostapenko is a little ridiculous.

I'll give Penko the benefit of the doubt on that one. She could have been dizzy or have a bad stomach. She seems to enjoy playing so she may have been hurting. Giorgi is all class to me. Goes about her business with no drama.
I'll give Ostapenko credit for being able to play pretty well and get results without having to do a lot of running during matches. She just hits so hard, the points are usually over fast and she generally dictates the rallies.

And I appreciate the Giorgi praise. Her demeanor is totally under-appreciated by fans and many others on tour. People make ridiculous complaints about her handshakes, but she just doesn't like shaking hands. For everything else, she is quiet and composed at all times. Doesn't scream or grunt when hitting (despite hitting huge, especially for her size), and doesn't have annoying "come ons" or other silly celebrations. Just keeps her mouth shut, her head down, and plays good tennis. Never causes any trouble.

Jesus f*cking sh*t, Iga quit.

I hate women tennis players.
I guess she was scared of Bronzetti...

Anyways, saw Lucia play a number of times in the past years, in club tennis, regional tournaments and low ITFs. Nice girl, but never in my life would I have guessed she'd make it to the WTA level... She's now into the Top 50... shows you what I know!

She did, however, always have the two best "fundamentals" in tennis since Halep went under the knife many years ago...

They're making a mockery of these tournaments, to be fair.
If all that matters is Slams, then just play exhibitions and that's it.

Very disappointed in Swiatek. I thought she was the sort that respected the sport.
Not even remotely interested in winning her first tournament on grass just because it's not Wimbledon? That could come back to bite her in the arse if she fails to win Wimbledon or indeed any other tournament on grass.

It's also part of this general trend to make the game even more Slam-centric.
If younger players start following the big three's example (later in their careers mind you, before that they played pretty much everywhere) of only playing Masters 1000s and Slams, we could soon be faced with a sport where players specialise only in big tournaments and win 25+ Slams while only lifting a total of 30 or so titles in their careers, which would be pathetic.

Think the WTA needs to re-evaluate points being given for losing RR matches at the WTA Finals.

Was trying to work out how Gauff is still in the top 10 and how Kasatkina is still at #11.

Gauff got 375 points for losing all 3 of her matches (all in straight sets). Kasatkina meanwhile got 500 points for 2 losses and 1 win, the win was funnily enough against the mediocre Coco.

Someone find Iga’s appearance fee.

One of the worst blatant quits in a long time.
Oh geez I just saw the tweet... I was going to give her some benefit of the doubt thinking she wouldn't just quit with such an easy maiden grass title in play but "a fever and possible food poisoning" as an excuse.... that is god awful.
