WTA week of 7/30; San Jose (Premier) & Washington DC

I see that Vekic plays qualifications in Montreal but what if she wins Washington, is she automatically qualified then or she has to pull out?

Unintentionally found where some of the players are staying here in San Jose. I was walking downtown and I saw one of the woman coaches. I recognized her right away but I'm not sure who her player is. This was probably about 8:30am this morning and then walking back later I spotted Konta as she was probably headed to the site.

Both players showed up, that's a good sign. No injuries during the coin toss, I think this might be happening.

So apparently Azarenka took a MTO and Collins looked at her own coach and called it tactical and laughed and then Vika death stared her for questioning it, as a result, Vika didn't shake her hand when she retired.

Drama.

Sakkari has Venus on the ropes. Will serve for the match.

I've said it before but Sakkari is very under the radar for most. One of the few WTA players to be coached by a former top ATP player (Thomas Johansson).

Interestingly though she came into this event on a 4 match losing streak dating back to making the French Open 3R.

Some results from Sakkari in the last 12 months:

USO 3R
Wuhan SF
Indian Wells 4R
Miami 3R
Istanbul SF
Rome 3R
French Open 3R

Wins over: Pliskova, Bertens, Suarez Navarro, Kontaveit, Coco, Barty, Vesnina and Wozniacki.

Sakkari gets it done in straight sets 6-4 7-6 over Venus Williams.

Into the San Jose SF where she'll play Danielle Collins for a spot in the final! Huge opportunity.

Out of the 4 SFists in San Jose, only Mertens has won a tour title.

Despite that, one of the following is going to win a title this week, and it'll be a Premier:

SF's:
Danielle Collins v Maria Sakkari
#4 Elise Mertens v #5 Mihaela Buzarnescu

Mertens with a HUGE opportunity to win a Premier title.

Her year has been fantastic. She's won 3 International titles, made the Australian Open SF, French Open 4R and Wimbledon 3R.

She's up to #9 in the race rankings, if she makes the final she'll jump to #6!!

An underwhelming draw at San Jose. Yeah, I call it the San Jose tournament. It has no affiliation with Stanford anymore and the feel and setting are completely different.

90% of the time, I didn't recognize the players. When I asked people around me, 90% of the time, they didn't know who the players were. Keys, Sharapova, Sarbine dropped out and Serena was a no show. Vika injured mid tournament. Serena looks absolutely huge btw. Even by her standards.

Stanford has had some weak draws, especially in '16 but this group was just meh. I hope they can attract better players and they can stay healthy enough to play.

Danielle Collins is a pretty face but has the heart of a witch. She's even witchier than Sharapova.

Let's get down to brass tacks: San Jose was almost totally lacking in WTA hotties. Danielle Collins would qualify as such, but she's as winning a personality as the wicked witch of the east. And now west I suppose.

I don't hate her, but her on court behavior is bratty and childish. I'm just upset San Jose couldn't draw any hot women aside from her. The Stanford campus used to draw tons of them. Except during the olympics.

I thought Sakkari was pretty cute as well as Cepede Royg. Mugu isn't bad and Mladenovic is cute.
I did find Danielle's constant come ons or whatever she was saying a little annoying but can't fault her for it.

There were definitely some attractive women at svc. But you didn't get the Radwanska sisters or Sharapova or Georges or Witthoeft or Heidi El Tabakh etc.

But yeah, they were definitely attractive enough to attract some men with cameras the size of space telescopes.

Hopefully there will be some improvement in the draw next year: Stanford attracted some real stunners in the past, hopefully the San Jose version of the classic can pull off the same.

I did see Witthoeft back in 2015 and she caught my eye but if she wasn't a tennis player, I might not look a second time. I was just happy to see players play the game in a way that I'll never be able to. Sure I can do the shanks and the racquet smashes like them but that's about it:D

I'm willing to bet we saw each other down there. Have you given any thought to volunteering next year? Finding out that the drivers get Porsches as long as they're 25+, is enticing.

You get a Porsche for volunteering?!? Sold. :-)

I saw Witthoeft at Stanford. She is very hot. Most of these girls look a lot better in person than on camera. The camera adds weight (and height in many cases). Danielle Collins, Garbine and a host of others are surprisingly thin(ner) in person. Gibbs is looking pretty athletic.

Volunteering as a driver might be interesting. I'll have to look into that.

There was that one year Marion Bartoli was thin and looking pretty darn good, too. Melanie Oudin, Hantuchova, a younger Azarenka, the list goes on and on.

This year was more like the lean '16 olympics year with a weak field.

I wish the unicorn Genie Bouchard would attend...

Can't imagine how large and how many telescopic lenses would show up at San Jose if she did...

Collins in control, takes the first 6-3. I'm really admiring her form, it's like textbook mechanics.

Collins was 6-3 4-1 (double break) up over Sakkari but Maria fought back to win 6 of the next 7 games to force a 3rd set.

In the 3rd set she went down 0-2 but she's up 3-2 now. Impressive.

Seems to be more of a Collins implosion, she is getting a little wild on some of her shots. Going for too much. Sakkari playing well though.
