WTA week of 7/31; Washington DC 500 & Prague 250

Samsonova is completely destroying Collins 6-1, 3-0. I'm starting to think Collins beating Iga at the 2022 Australian Open was a fluke with Collins on a brief hot streak.

Collins and Samsonova are playing in the stadium court to a handful of spectators. Meanwhile, Bencic and Potapova are playing to a packed stand in an outside court. I don't know why US tennis organizers, or tennis organizers in general, continue to do this. Feature mediocre match-ups for the sake of flag waving idiocy at the expense of far more compelling match-ups.

Sammy is defending champ so her 1st match should be on the main court. Problem is DC is blowing it up tho.

Bouzy lost in 1 match where she’s #1 seed in her own country is further karma of being a bad sport asking for the DQ of the doubles match a few weeks ago.

Collins hasn't played a match in awhile. Pretty rusty it appears.

Andreescu a bit of a choke. Match points at 15-40 on Kostyuk's serve. 3 balls into the net. Kostyuk serving at 5-4 in tiebreaker.

I'd call it an outlier, not a fluke. She was playing well generally at the time and played well in beating Iga. But clearly, she hasn't sustained that level and she's not on Iga's level generally.

Don’t forget she also had 0-30 on kostyuk’s serve up 5-4 in the third. Only got to 30-40 but couldn’t break. Always lose bets on chokes like these.

Andreescu played higher percentage tennis in 2019. Now she seems too impatient to set up points and instead hits as hard as she can to go for an early winner and it results in the ball going into the net or going long. She has the talent but her coach needs to adjust her tactics in a big way.

David was up 3-1 in the first set and then Stephens was up 5-3. Stephens would then squander 7 sets points and lose the set in the tiebreak 8-10. That was crazy.

A byproduct of decreased movement and mobility

And now Stephens lost 1-6 in third.

No reason for Bianca to dump 3 shots into the net on MPs though.

Hmm. Dunno if it got mentioned anywhere else, but apparently Brad Gilbert gonna be part of Coco's coaching team for the US hardcourt season. Interesting to see how that will go, but even the article I'm reading now mentions what we all know, her forehand needs help. Ain't gonna be the type of thing he can fix overnight.

Curious how it pans out though.

Do you like Anybody Bill? Anyone?
Yes, bouncing the ball 22 times ( glad YOU counted) could be distracting, but my eyes were somewhere else.
I had to count because I was waiting so long for her to serve. Imagine how her opponent feels.
I like Vekic, Collins, Ryba, Tatiana Maria, Ostapenko, and others.

Murray/Evans looks a great pairing on paper, both have great volleying skills and communication. No surprise they knocked out the #2 seeds.

Poor go of things for Pera lately.

Was defending both her 250 Budapest and 250 Hamburg titles last month.

Lost 1R in Budapest to Shnaider and then the next week lost in Hamburg in the QF yet again to Shnaider.

Down from #27 to #53 in just those few weeks.

Svitolina leading easily at 6-2, 5-1.

I'm intrigued as to why Svitolina has such a dominant H2H against Kasatkina. I'm beginning to see why. It looks Daria's defense and loopy FH is ineffective against Svitolina. Elina is able to take the ball on the rise or just after peak and attack the balls easily - frequently making contact above her head. Not an easy shot to consistently hit.

Kasatkina's going to lose this match. In hindsight, Kasatkina had a great win over Wimbledon champ Vondrousova at Roland Garros. She also has a really hot girlfriend to console her.
