WTA week of 8/17; Monterrey 500 & Cleveland 250

Cirstea up 6-2 5-4 and aiming to win only the 3rd WTA title of her career after wins in Tashkent (hard) in 2008 and Istanbul (clay) in 2021.
Li's just saved a few MPs on her serve to force Cirstea to serve for it - let's see if she wobbles.

Edit: as expected, it wasn't straightforward for Cirstea given her tendency to tighten up in tough moments but thankfully for her Li wasn't able to capitalise on break chances to really press Cirstea.

Awesome scenes of the few Romanian fans in the stadium cheering, singing and literally giving her flowers.

Cirstea made the QF of the USO in 2023. She's potentially got Muchova in R2 and Noskova in R3 before Keys in R4 so it's a fairly brutal draw but she's just won a tournament so let's see if she can cause any upsets.

Qualified, didn’t lose a set all week. 35 years old, holler.
I didn't realise she had to qualify! Thankfully she won all her matches in straights - six bread sticks and a bagel to make it easy breezy. I hope she isn't fatigued for the USO but those scorelines suggest she should be just fine.

Also on the subject of Cirstea, the fact that she won titles during her teens and her 30s, but 0 during her 20s (only reaching 2 finals during her 20s most notably in Toronto in 2013), stands out.

There can't be too many other examples of that. Mirjana Lucic was another example, winning her titles as a 15 and 16 year old in Bol in 1997 (her WTA tournament debut) and 1998, and then as a 32 year old in Quebec beating Venus in the final. The 16 year and 4 month gap between her 2nd and 3rd title really stood out.

But Cirstea played in significantly more tour level matches in-between her title wins in Tashkent in 2008 and Istanbul in 2021, than Lucic did in-between her title wins in Bol in 1998 and Quebec in 2014 (with her suffering well documented personal issues and financial problems, and her lengthy hiatus).

Arantxa Rus winning a title as a 32 year old at Hamburg in 2023, after never previously reaching a tour level final (she was well known in tennis circles for her truckload of titles at challenger / ITF level), was also notable.
