WTA week of 9/19; Tokyo 500 & Seoul 250

That almost got really embarassing.

Reasonable on the whole from Raducanu. The other girl was pretty awful for the most part. Just didn't seem to have much control over her shots.

Osaka is playing in Japan, that's a huge deal. and most of the big star players of WTA are playing.

on funny note,, Rybakina saids she doesn't really feel like she's the Wimbledon champion this year. she gets no attention and no Ranking boost and hardly any Endorsements...................wow.. what a travesty. if she was American,,, she would be worth around 60 million dollars right now..:rolleyes:

Or you just wonder if after Kenin and Raducanu winning majors then plummeting if sponsors are just being a little more reluctant/patient right now.

Highly suspicious illness. It certainly would have been a very tough first match of the tournament for Osaka playing Haddad-Maia. She probably would have wanted that Saville match to get some feels going.

How is Linette still going at this point? Almost 3 hrs today and through again.

I've had to set my colleague straight over Wickmayer. He looked at the 500 ranking and got really excited for Raducanu's prospects today. Maybe she will still win but it won't be an easy match.

Osaka withdraws from her match with BHM. Just retire already for heavens sake
It almost looks like she had no intention to play to begin with, but the tournament director convinced her to sign up to boost ticket sales.

Never seen this before. She won by WO in first round, then she withdrew by WO on second?! Wow.

Agreed plus her sponsors like Nike are probably forcing her at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if she got dropped by some of them soon. She's not the hottest and boring unlike a Coco Gauff and knows once she retires nobody is gonna endorse/sign her, so she still plays part time and just retires and withdraws once she doesn't feel like playing.

100$ says she would've retired mid match against Saville but unfortunately for her, Daria tore her ACL after on game.

Shocking from NO to do that in Tokyo of all places. Her dad is her coach so I expect it’ll be downhill for a while longer until she decides she wants to make another run and finds a real coach again.

Why is everyone calling out Osaka for withdrawing when we don't know what happened? I know so many love to hate her but many things could have happened to cause her to withdraw, why the pile on about "wokeness" and "she should just retire". I mean geez guys...

She could be ill for real. Who knows?

Given her history though, it really isn't a stretch to think she had major cold feet about playing in front of an expectant Tokyo crowd, and especially against a bang-in-form top player like Hadadd-Maia. When Osaka signed up, she probably envisioned starting off against local wildcard Aki Nobodyama.

I've no interest in whether she's "woke" or not. That's just one poster.

I certainly don't want her to retire! But our champions need to be made of tougher stuff than retiring with abdominal pain. Take some motrin.

17 yo Andorran Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva will play 'Penko last tonight. The 17 yo won her first 2 matches in straight sets against C. Paquet of France and R. Marino of Canada while 'Penko had to play 3 sets for each of her first 2 matches. Will the teenager keep her momentum or 'Penko will survive once more time?

Thanks for introducing her to us. 2 things interesting from the article:

“I like feeling pressure and nerves”… hahahaha… some top ranked player who withdrew due to tummy ache should take note and learn.
And she beat @UnderratedSlam “favorite” player BHM. That’s impressive.

Funny, I tuned into Martic - Zhang minutes ago at
5-5 in the 1st and I've seen Zhang take every game since then to lead 7-5, 4-0. :)
Love it!
Zhang has whipped off 7 games in a row now, 5-0 in the 2nd! :)

Zhang should be in the locker room now celebrating, silly player! :(
100 ways she could have put away the sitter at the net on match point.
