Defending champ Tsurenko lost to Cirstea in the first round in Istanbul.
Also out is top seed Schmiedlova

Granted, it is only because of the withdrawals, but has there ever been another case in a WTA international tier tourney where a world no. 34 has been No. 1 seed?

Yes.
2016 Hobart International. Top seed was Sloane who was ranked 35th in the world.
2016 Rio Open. Top seed was Pereiera who was ranked 44th in the world.
2015 Tashkent. Top seed was Beck who was 43rd in the world.
2015 Quebec. Top seed was Lucic-Baroni who was 48th in the world.
2015 Brasil Open. Top seed was Tatijana Maria?? who was 64th in the world. Surely that has to be the worst like wow.

What an odd match that was between Lucie and Pliskova. Lucie was up 3-1 in the 3rd. Then she was broken, but Pliskova failed to serve it out. Then Lucie was broken again, with Pliskova finally taking it 7-5. Amazing scenes.

Poor Lucie. :(

Also completed today:

Vinci over Makarova
Goerges over Cornet
Petko over Mladenovic
Niculescu over Garcia

Beck/Kerber & Babos/Muguruza still to come.

Lucie is still recovering from an injury or illness of some kind I think? she hasn't been right since last years French Open.

Cirstea winning a match is pretty amazing in an of itself...one almost forgets she still even plays because she never seems to do anything anymore...which is sad because she once had a game that had a little promise in it.

Every match Halep plays you feel like the opponent has a good chance to win. Not a good sign.

her rise to the top 10 was marked by her stomping the yard with opponents, a couple of years ago I seriously thought she would have a major to her name by now. Its like now that shes expected to do well, she can't, or at least when she does she makes it so much harder on herself to win matches and she burns herself out. I like her a lot...but shes got to get it together

Hey, romeo logged in as Aussie.

The only Aussie Romeo I know is this version. :)

Halep is a hot mess at the moment. Saw Siegemund play in SA and is a decent ball striker but would never imagine her blowing a top ranked player off the court like she did today. Amazing.

Lol poor Ivanovic. Can't seem to beat Pliskova, has lost to her 3 times this year alone. Ana better watch herself, she's at 19th in the world and will be defending SF points at the French. Her ranking could plummet. She hasn't won a title since September 2014...

The French Open really will be interesting for the WTA. Many storylines to come out of it.
First and foremost theres barely any French Open champs in the draw. Serena, Schiavone, Kuznetsova, Ivanovic. Sharapova won't play with the suspension. Can we see a new French champ/new slam champ?

Serena defending 2000 points, hasn't won a title since August. Can she win the title or at least do a decent job of defending her points?
Aga is 2nd in the world, lost 1st round at the French last year. Clay has never been her best surface but she's reached the QF before. Can she edge much closer to number 1? o_O
Kerber number 3, only reached 3R last year so many points to gain there. She too has never had much success at the French but has reached the QF.
Muguruza, beat Serena at the French few years back, could be dangerous. Can see her going deep in the tournament
Azarenka, can she continue her fine form?
Halep, can she turn around this shocking past 18 months? Lost 2R last year but reached the final the previous year
Kuznetsova, past champ and had a decent few months, can she score big?
Ivanovic, defending big points, will she fall out of the top 20?
Stosur, past finalist, loves clay, bad with pressure. Underdog? (this one isn't really a storyline..)
You've also got Bacsinzsky defending semifinalist points, Svitolina and Errani defending QF points. How will they go?
Safarova, finalist last year but was sidelined for months and can barely win a match. How will she fare?

I know it's still a while away but needless to say i'm very keen for the French Open.

Also:

Siegemund over Vinci
Petra over Garbine
Aga over Ka. Pliskova

Aga/Siegemund, Petra/Angie in the semis. Ain't mad at it.

The french will be interesting for sure

Top players
Serena- her form is a mess, she doesn't seem confident and her game is most vulnerable on clay even on her best days, she could power her way through on sheer will but I don't know if she can defend the way she is right now

Azarenka- I think she could be one to watch, she's got the best form this year in my opinion, although she's awkward sometimes on clay movement wise. She's improved though

Big drops- Safarova and Ivanovic I think will bomb out and fall down the rankings. Lucie especially is a mess and Ana could go out to anyone.

Ones to watch
Errani- she's a mug everywhere else but on dirt she does well

Svitolina- I like her, well I pick her all the time in sdl anyway, but I think she could be a dark horse. Her game seems well rounded, she has slowly and confidently rose and the French could be her breakthrough

Muguruza- her first breakthroughs came at the french, she has a good game for dirt, however she's been erratic since wimbledon, awesome YEC performance in RRS, erratic other places

Kuznetsova- Miami proved she has a pulse and she's a former champion...dark horse?

Mug played a pretty horrid 3rd set against Petra. Tried to go even flatter than Petra. To say she leaked errors would be too kind. Disappointing...
