Two international tournaments this week and a 125k.

Monterrey:

Seeds are: Svitolina, Konta, Linette, Sloane, Peterson, Azarenka, Wang and Bouzkova.
Wildcards: Emma Navarro, Sloane, Venus(!) and Clijsters(!)

Muguruza was the 2x defending champ but chose not to play.

Most storylines from this week are in Monterrey.

You've got Clijsters playing her second tournament of her comeback. She opens against #2 Konta.
It's also Azarenka's first match of 2020 and since the US Open. She made the final here last year so big points to defend for her.
Acapulco finalist got a SE into the draw.
Former #1 Venus looking to snap her 4 match losing streak while former USO champ Sloane looking to snap her 5 match losing streak.

Monterrey

Lyon

What is Sofia doing?! Take a week off, woman.
She hasn't exactly played much considering she's lost first match in her last 2 tournaments. They have to make their way over to the US anyway as it's nearly IWs, so Lyon at least splits the flight up. She likely wants to get back to winning ways beforehand and I imagine her appearance fee will now be juicy.

Although Sofia/Diatchenko will be easy on the eyes if it’s televised around here.
Yea big time!! I like to see Diatcenko catch a break and make a run sometime in the near future.
Though to do that she have to clean up her serve i think

They had Peterson/Kozlova from Monterrey on TC just now, there was ONE little girl behind their benches holding a big ball for autographs, they both better have hooked her up.

The RealBounce system is good, much better than Hawkeye.
However the people operating it (showing the replays) need some training.

Once again, (Wang's last challenge) they stop the flight of the ball as it hovers over the line.
It is showing the ball hovering over an inch of the line.
But the ball hasn't DEPRESSED yet and it hasn't changed DIRECTION.

One of those two must occur before the ball can be called in or out!
They continue the flight of the ball, after the brief pause.
NOW it looks like the ball did NOT contact the line! (when it changes direction).
But they called it in.

Hawkeye was a marketing ploy that worked on stupid people, destined for
the garbage heap of history

I agree.
But because they have invested greatly, pushing their inferior product into so many venues, it will
take a concerted effort to displace them.
I understand that RealBounce is currently more costly to implement, so it might take some time before costs can be reduced.

But really, what would most people prefer to judge if a ball was in or out:
a computer simulation based on lasers and calculations, or an actual video of the ball, played back in slow motion?

Clijsters vs. Konta (tomorrow)
Should be a cracker of a match!
I like both players, so it will be difficult to choose sides.

2020 Indian Wells Challenger 2R: #95 Stosur v #319 Zvonareva

2010 Indian Wells tournament 4R: #11 Stosur v #15 Zvonareva

The two have quite the rivalry including the Premier Charleston final 10 years ago, 2011 Stuttgart, Eastbourne and US Open QF.

It's their first match since that 2011 US Open QF (Stosur won en route to the title). They were both SFists at the 2010 YEC where Zvonareva was #2 and Stosur was #5. How times change.

Venus cannot close out her sets now! Last tournament she has like 8 matchpoints and still lost the set and eventually the match! Was 5-3 now 5-4!

Wow Venus looks and plays like my grandmother!
Including memory loss.
Losing 0-4 in the third at 40-40, Venus walks off the court thinking she just lost the game!

She’s going to have to get mentally strong too. I definitely agree with you, serve broke down at the Saint Petersburg cup. She was up 5-2 in the second set and let Sakkari back into the match.

I'm excited for Clijsters. I hope she does well!
I would like to see her do well also, but realistically I’m not so sure she’ll be able to keep up with the pace of the game today. It’s changed a lot since she retired

Been saying for a while that I thought Venus was simply hanging around for the Olympics but with the amount of American talent now I don't think she'll be in the top 4 to qualify in singles and maybe even doubles. Really should just retire to save what's left of her career. At least Stosur is still doing something in doubles and made a singles final last year. Venus now on a 5 match losing streak and not helping her legacy.

Remember the days when players retired while in the top 10? Dementieva, Henin (was actually #1), Pennetta, Li Na, Bartoli.

Yeah, it's sad to see Venus playing in such a state. I get it, you love to game, and that's to your credit, but really, when you're a former #1 who can't get past the first round anymore, it's time to retire.

Another 1st round lost where she had multiple chances to finish a set for the match or for a two break set! Venus just does not have the ability to finish the set easily anymore!

She said see you next year in Acapulco last week, but 2020 needs to be it. I don't need to see her losing 1st round everywhere for another year and a half. She should have won a slam and the womens WTF in 2017 and just 2.5 years later every qualie out there can beat her.

I'm not sure Venus is damaging her legacy given that she's been so up and down for quite a few years. That said, it is sad to see a former no.1 humbled so frequently.
I think her sister is in more danger of damaging her legacy unless she can pick up a major: her once mental toughness is now questioned. And her uber solid win/loss percentage of winning major finals is taking hit after hit.

Yes, but I'm finding it confusing trying to keep track of all these Wangs!
I was expecting to see a taller one. :)
We need to just call them Yafan, Qiang... Wait, Xinyu and Xiyu will still confuse people (not me)... Hmm it will potentially happen that all 4 are regulars at slams in the near future so they need to come up with a method!

I know they're getting older but are they playing enough? I don't think they are and they're coming into tournaments with weeks or months of no tour match play...

The younger sister has generally played a lax schedule which has served her well in the past. I thought Venus generally played a full schedule?

I like Xiyu better than Xinyu. It's also seems Xiyu is cropping better result than Xinyu. Both talented tho.

Venus may be stubborn and keen playing to get some match wins, which may come if she does get more matches in but I feel they're vulnerable as they're having months of not playing tournaments where as their younger opponents are playing a lot of tournaments.

Watson is back on court now after Sunday's win in Acapulco - she's playing Germany's Maria in R1, and she's up 4-1 in the first set. She could play Clijsters or Konta in R2, so I'd really like her to get through and know the winner of that match will play an inform player. I have seen the pattern of Heather's career, so to expect another title this week, or even this year would be silly, but I am really hoping she is entering a more consistent era of her career as she was such a promising junior (like so many others of course). Her titles have often come a couple of years apart, like a hot week of form and then nothing.
