WTA weeks of 03/08 - 03/19: Indian Wells (1000)

ER tried hard to give the match to Kovinic, but DK said “nah thanks, I’m good!”.
Kovinic can be so, so bad sometimes. And today was one of those times. Any decent player beats Raducanu easily today.
And in the next round Emma gets Linette, who very unlikely to reproduce her AO form, so it's a very convenient draw for Emma. But once she plays someone decent...

If Putint lost 10-15 more lbs she might turn into a hot chick!
Incorrect. She is already a hot chick, exactly as she is now. Attitude and all. I love her.

The American public is waiting for a new star, she started the year off very well so Tennis Channel was hoping she could sustain it, but she's struggling right now. No need to make a post like that.
That guy's post was dumb, but the hype around Parks was pretty laughable. If the American public wants to get behind a women's player, they can get behind Pegula, and yet nobody outside of tennis knows she exists. Just like Gauff was a bigger name than Kenin, despite Kenin actually winning a slam. They also seem to ignore Tiafoe for some reason, despite him having the most appealing game and personality of any American player near the top of the game right now. It's all a bit strange, but Parks isn't the answer.

Just noticed a lot of interesting doubles pairings (also a few on the mens side as well). I don't normally pay too much attention to dubs, but it seems like a lot of bigger names are teaming up. Did they increase the price money or something?

And how do you end up with pairings like Kasatkina and Trvisan? Pliskova and Martic? Collins and Stearns (is that like an annoying college girl thing)? Andreescu and Putinseva (which I actually love). Rybakina and Badosa (gergeous blonds hello!) Part of me wants to believe that some of these pairings are born out of flirtations, but maybe that's just wishful thinking.

I was talking to someone yesterday who asked "how can Pegula be #3 in the world ?" and my response was "because she can keep more than 5 balls in play." I was at the night session last night and I didn't even bother to go watch Parks play her doubles match. Good to see Kenin get a win last night but I think her time at the top is done as well, whereas Gauff still has some promise. I'm going to try and watch Mandlik play today, I like her game a lot.

Yeah, the WTA is something of a confusing mess right now, and Pegula reaching such a high ranking by virtue of consistency is the proof. And I agree that Kenin is inexplicably on the decline, and Gauff seems a better bet right now, but who knows if she will be able to take another step. Look at Anisimova. She definitely seems to have plateaued (at best), and I think part of her problem is that her movement has gotten worse as she has gotten older. Gauff might not have those issues, but even if her movement and athleticism stay the same, her game needs to improve. So many questions about so many players, and that's just the Americans.

Pegula is #3 in the world for 1 reason. She beats the players she is suppose to consistently and does not lose to players she isnt suppose to . I have no problem with that.

Yeah but for more casual fans, they probably don't see the early rounds of tournaments and all they see is Pegula losing in the later rounds to the players who are actually good.

Than and everyone always likes flashy big hitting which Pegula doesn't really provide. It's maybe another trap that tennis fans fall into that big hitting = skill, but it's there.

Yes, Pegula's ranking is down to a lot of consistency, but Gauff is actually pretty similar in that regard. She beats players she is supposed to beat, and usually loses to anyone that is highly ranked. Even her French Open run was largely thanks to a really friendly draw.

And I agree that the average fan is wowed by big hitting, but all anyone in the WTA does is bash from the baseline, some harder than others. The players that deviate from this can be counted on one hand.

Sakkari looks very buff!
She always does, and I think she looks great.

Danielle Collins playing doubles with a technifibre racquet.

That's pretty surprising. Wonder what is up. She also didn't get renewed (or didn't want to renew) with New Balance clothing, right? I know that happened a while ago now, but wonder what that was about.

She still had her babolat bag. So idk.

With Emma's match half an hour away, I've been reflecting on how bad a record British women have when it comes to injuries...

Raducanu (the obvious place to start)
Robson (finished before 25)
Konta (got injured at 30, retired. Wouldn't be so bad but she didn't really start until 24)
Swan (still only 23 but has been severly held back by injury)
Boulter (got into the top 100 then immediately got a bad injury, dropped out of the 100, never got back to that same standard).

Watson's the only decent player we've had to stay mostly clear of catastrophe.

Just caught tennis channel Andreescu vs. Stearns starting now. Interesting about Peyton Stearns. It mentions she was ncaa singles d1 champ playing for Univ of Texas, austin, has won two itf's in jan and feb, and just turned pro since last year. This Indian Wells is her fourth wta tour tournament.
