WTF/Masters Shields - relative importance

You could go straight on points but what are people's subjective sense about the relative importance.

Federer is on 17 Masters Shields + 5 WTF's

My feeling is that the point system has it about right - the WTF is worth about 1.5 times a Masters Shield. Hence Federer has equivalent to 24.5 Masters Shields.

Subjectively I feel a Masters Shield is worth around the same as getting to a semi of a grand Slam and the WTF is equivalent to being a losing finalist. Just out of interest - does anyone know the points currently at a Grand Slam for being a losing semi-finalist and a losing finalist?

And your subjective feeling would be correct (and I concur too), according to the ATP point system currently.

It is set at:

Slam finalist - 1400 points
Slam semifinalist - 900 points

Pretty close to a WTF undefeated win (1500 points), and Masters win (1000 points), respectively. Just a tad more than the corresponding slam round.

Your close, but that's not exactly correct.

ATP points distribution for a GS event:

W 2,000
F 1,200
SF 720
QF 360
R16 180
R32 90
R64 45
R128 10

Ah I just did a quick lookup of Wiki and they only had the old system. I thought they just doubled everything but apparently not.

Actually they did double the points for the champion, but they change the percentage distribution to all the previous rounds. The percentage is LESS than before. This also explain why Rafa is so far ahead of the other players since he won 3 slams.:)

When they originally changed to the new system in 2009, they actually doubled the existing scores from 2008.

That way, AO 2009 wouldn't be worth as much as two 2008 majors, and you wouldn't have players switching places because their existing points would suddenly be worth less than before.

wtf winner is about on par with a slam runner up..so Fed's wtf win puts him alongside Soderling, berdych and Joker's slam losses this year.

Fed may as well have just lost another slam final.

think of it this way
for a slam you have to win 7 matches
the early rounds you get maybe a bye and your first 2 or 3 opponents probably are not highly ranked. the last 2-4 matches are against the better/best players.
in the wtf there are no easy rounds or buys. yes #1 seed should have it "easy" with #8 but # 8 is not a pushover
so how you do in the wtf should hold alot of weight in my opinion
heres an amazing statistic.
lendl i beleive made it to the wtf 10 times in a row.
he made it to the finals 10 times in a row
he won 5 times.
my stats may be alittle off (im sure someone will point that out:)) but they are close

Close enough he made 9 in a row Lendl but 9 is still good.

I thought it was established a long time ago
