Wu Yibing may be the real deal

Legend
Wu Yibing’s current run at ATP Dallas has been spectacular. His level has been unreal all week.

Some background: He’s 23 and was a former ITF junior No.1 so had some serious cred as a kid. He’s been on tour, unsuccessfully, since 2017, and just under a year ago was languished barely inside the top 2000 (around 1900). From early 2019 to late 2021, he was unable to compete due to a serious injury. After a comeback year of deep challenger runs in 2022, and his current run in Dallas, Wu will be minimum #76 in the next rankings update, and with a win will climb to #58. He is the first Chinese man in open era history to reach an ATP Final and is also the highest ranked Chinese player in the history of the ATP rankings.

His game is incredible. Alcaraz-like with brutal shotmaking, super high energy, intense, aggressive, takes balls early, and wants to take initiative on every point. Very quick and flexible as well. There’s things to improve on, but he has a future as a tour staple for sure with this game.

I want to believe but this guy lost to Popyrin in Adelaide and Moutet at AO. This is a great run but probably just an outlier week.

He hits very hard and close to the lines. It's a game plan that's much more prone to generating a lot of errors outdoors.

Wu Yibing has a top 50 skill set. But let’s pump the brakes on the Alcaraz comparisons.

His game is too intense for his body... he's getting injured because of his play style.. will be done by 26, stick a fork in him :(

Isner is putting on a choking masterclass right now. So many looks on Wu's serve and can't convert, he just duffed the EASIEST putaway volley on match point

Yibing is a nice player and he has the dynamism on his FH that I like but I don't see any special talent. He is definitely on his way to the top 40 though, he can hit almost any angle and has very good footwork.

Wu. Yibing. Saves MP vs John Isner and WINS the Dallas title after a titanic 3 set clash. First Chinese man in open era history to win an ATP Tour title. Climbs to #58 in next weeks rankings.

Isnt Isner around top 20? He used to always be...

Wu said his goal is to be in top 30 this year. He's certainly looking good.

Btw yielding 44 Aces in a 3-set match and still won. I wonder what the record is. On the other hand, he really needs to work on his return game.

Needs to work on a net game too. There's no need standing on the baseline when you have big John stretched out on shot after shot when you know movement is not his strength, instead of just coming in and hitting a volley. His game is solid though and he can only get better from here.

Good for Wu. Kind of feel sorry for the Big John , not the best ending of 3th TB. He is coming from elbow surgery &I hope he will play as long as body allows him

He is solid and has a very good serve. The number of ATP players who can serve explosively and reliably under pressure is not that many.

Injuries are going to be the concern with him.

Good point... Seems steady yet explosive and very fast.

He is really fun to watch. He showed some incredible mental fortitude to win these last two matches in which he was probably out played overall in both. I cannot remember the last time a player won a title losing the dominance ratio in both the semi finals and the finals

Reminds me of a certain Dutch player last year, who played spectacularly well in a few grass tournaments but then mostly disappointed.

Yeah I’ll give you that. TvR has been quite poor since Wimbledon. But Wu is younger and was already on his way prior to 2 1/2 injury hiatus. Was also a junior number 1 and slam winner, so he’s got more to his name than van Rijthoven ever had.

I've been fortunate to know him since his junior days and him doing well is no surprise. Even when he came back middle of last summer, so many players in the 100-200 range that saw him at the Challengers said he would be top 100 by end of last year, which is saying something as he does not have the benefit of WCs to get into the higher point tournaments.

Top 30 by end of year is a modest goal, but will have to see how his game translates to clay. If he can win somewhat consistently on clay (by far his weakest surface), then I would say top 10 within two years

Let's wait and watch, the guy does have some potential.

We'll have to wait and see. At the moment, every ATP and WTA player that wins a 250 gets hyped up as a potential ATG of the sport.#

I'm sick of the hyperbole.
