Wu Yibing may be the real deal

His forehand reminds me a lot of Alcaraz. I think Wu might actually be a little more explosive going inside out.

Wu's victory is a victory for one of the "little" guys who is probably 5'10.5" my best guess. It was amazing how he was able to hold his nerve to get those mini-breaks. Even though he has impressive groundstrokes I am really impressed how tough his mental game is. I also love he doesn't have an annoying grunt. Look forward to watching Wolf, Alcaraz, Paul, Shelton in addition to Bublik, Brooksby, Shapo, Sinner, Mannarino, and others.

What impresses me most of all is his mental fortitude. The resilience to come back from his final two matches down a set, in the final down 4 MPs, and win, is solid. He’s got an uncanny ability to play up to his best on those big points.

But also the fact he missed 2 and a half years of professional tennis over injuries, 2 AND A HALF. For context, Federer was still a top 3 player on tour when this guys injuries initially sidelined him. Yet despite this, he came back, dominated the challenger scene in 2022, and has his maiden ATP title. He has the makings of at the very least a top 15 player.

Needs to work on a net game too. There's no need standing on the baseline when you have big John stretched out on shot after shot when you know movement is not his strength, instead of just coming in and hitting a volley. His game is solid though and he can only get better from here.
A NET GAME?! Way to show complete lack of awareness of what era you're in. Nothin' personnel, kid.

Just watched his highlights due to this thread. Hadn’t seen highlights that got me that excited to watch the game since probably Fed. He must not be that consistent through a full match yet because otherwise he would not be losing to moutet

Great to come across another follower of Sc2
Been around since the battle reports before it ever released and following the scene on and off ever since, watched lots of streamers/tournaments on twitch. Also tried to get good at the game for a while barely made GM around start of lotv but too much of a time consuming grind for me lol

Looking back on this thread:

I don’t think Wu has the consistency to be a top player. Not even top 10, but a Bautista/Carreno or a Norrie to just have a solid top 25 career with a few bursts into the top 10. Can’t even see that for him.

His fitness is a big issue. Think he’s a Karatsev, shows up every few months for a big upset or a deep run then goes back to R1 losses. Just not as good.

If China is looking for someone to try and push up the rankings, it might be Zhang. He’s more consistent, doesn’t get injured as often, and can make deep runs on all 3 surfaces.
