Halep - Muguruza, tonight 11 pm EST

Bouchard - Barthel, tomorrow 6 am EST

both on center court, which is streamed

Let's see how Halep and Bouchard are performing after the break they had.

poor Aga, but I am not really surprised, more and more players figured out her game, if she cannot add power and play aggressively, I doubt she will stay in Top 10 for very long.

she looks physically ragged and worn out, patched up all over the place

Maria took the 2nd set 6:2 and had the break on the 3rd, she plays better and better when the match goes on

Aga again disappoints me. Come one girl, hit the gym, or these types of results will become a regularity.

Impressed by Mona Barthel today. Beat Shuai Peng very comfortably.

Maria won 3:6 6:2 6:2, a shaky start but finished so strong. I didn't get to see the day sessions, but for the evening matches the stadium was complete packed. Can't wait for Serena v. Cornet tomorrow.

Depends on how you measure that. In "dollar" terms there is a lot of poverty but most of those "in poverty" have their own house with a nice piece of land or a nice apartment in the city and enough food to live from day to day and most still have enough left to buy a TV, mobile phone and many have cars.

Compare that to "rich" people living in say New York spending most of their income on a small apartment hardly getting by.

In a medium sized city you should be able to obtain a nice apartment not costing more than $100 a month and a nice dinner will set you back at most $5-$7.

And a haircut (including shoulder massage) will cost a whopping $1, no tips required.

In rural areas these things are even less costly.

Wow! How much if it includes "happy endings?" $1.50?

I'd like to watch Mugu/Halep, Muguruza is not very consistent, but she is capable of hitting through Halep. It will be interesting to see if both players are on tomorrow.

OK, let's see Muguruza-Halep.
For my taste, this arena is too circular.
Only Romanian-language streaming?
1-0 Halep
then breaks, as Muguruza isn't comfortable with hard, fast returns
2-0

Both in Adidas, similar colors, but different dresses.

Muguruza makes too many errors, esp on FH
3-0 Halep.
A bit of public in boxes, not much in the rest.

6-2 Halep, plays very well

But Muguruza breaks for
2-0 serves very well
3-0 Muguruza, 2 breaks up
pressures Halep quite well now

1-1 in sets, Halep was quite shaky in the 2nd

Instead of variety (slice, dropshots), Halep stays in mano a mano with Muguruza, and that is not recommended for too long
2-1 Muguruza, one break up
but Halep breaks back for
2-2
Everything is on the table
Halep serves at love
3-2

Muguruza steps into the ball better than Halep
4-3 Muguruza with break up
Not good for Halep: Muguruza has a longer, heavier ball

6-3 Muguruza
wins match deservedly, she was the aggressive player.

I haven't seen anything new from Halep. No plan B, no slice, no dropshots, no volleys, no stepping into the court. Playing hardball with those bigger than you has its limits.

Halep needs more variety. She allowed Muguruza to take the initiative from the net.

Let's hope Beijing will be a little bit better.

Aggressive Muguruza Shocks Halep
http://www.wtatennis.com/news/article/4165239/title/aggressive-muguruza-shocks-halep

The match numbers showed just how in the zone Muguruza was. Facing one of the best defenders in the game she managed a positive winners to unforced errors differential in the match, 34 to 33, while Halep was clearly rattled, finishing with a -17 differential of 21 winners to 38 unforced errors.

I know Halep has a lot of fans in this forum, but do you realistically think she can win this tournament with her recent results?

Actually Radwanska has been in the top 10 for 7 years now. It is no accident or fluke. There are more ways than one to play tennis, but these finer points are completely lost on most people who tend to see only a limited part of the tennis spectrum.

The Garcia match was in reality a battle of titans. They played 240 points, Garcia won 122, just 4 more than Radwanska, with 66 winners. Power finesse and all court skill. In fact, often times it took 3 or even 4 winners from Garcia that would otherwise be winners to win the point against Radwanska's anticipation. That's what it took to overcome Radwanska. Much as it pains me to agree with Mr Murray ;) Garcia is a candidate for a future number one a few years hence.

two other matches, Lisicki led Svitolina 5:1 and can't close it out, Svitolina won the next 5 games in a row and then the tiebreak, Errani Led Riske 4:1 and Riske came back and took the first set 6:4, this is so WTA branded tennis, LOL

so? no one can stay in Top 10 forever, Aga is not improving while others are catching up, I don't see her staying in Top 10 for very long, maybe one more year if she is lucky.

Apparently the Halep answer is no, at least for this event. Hopefully for her sake she does better next week and comes into Singapore in decent form.

No, Radwanska deserves to be in the top ten. At least her tennis is interesting and she is a smart player with some variety. She can also occasionally beat the power players such as Azarenka and Sharapova whereas somebody like Simona Halep can't beat power players to save her life. Halep IMO is a player whose ranking at number 2 is a joke and she is only there because she was taking advantage of injuries of Azarenka, Sharapova and Serena. Hopefully, order will be restored soon and better players will take her spot.

Sorry, I know she has fans on here but for the life of me I have trouble seeing why.

Muguruza took out Halep 2:6 6:2 6:3, not really surprised, Muguruza has a lot fire power, I know she is capable of creating troubles for Halep.

no one "deserves" to be in anything, they all need to earn that.

If halep runs into another player who can hit a lot of winners and keep their errors relatively low she's pretty much toast. Halep doesn't really have any weapons.

Get out of here. Have you heard the names Kvitova, Kerber, Lisicki, Stosur? They are all power players, all beaten by Halep.

Kerber is not a power player! And Lisicki and Stosur? On a good day my grandma can beat those head cases. I am talking about the real consistent and reliable power players at the top of the heap such as Serena and Sharapova. Now we see that Muguruza who is also a power player and an inconsistent one beat Halep.

I know you have an obsession for Halep but IMO she is way overhyped. I much prefer Muguruza over Halep.

+1. Get her out of the top ten. PLEASE! She is currently occupying valuable real estate at number 2.

Halep is #4 on my 2014 WTA Roadkill list. #2 ranked, 2 titles and 8 early round losses in 15 tournaments. She's got Martina Hingis issues.

Gotta love the logic on here sometimes.

'Radwanska deserves to be in the top ten! She's earned it!'

Quite right, and then ...

'Get Halep out of the Top Ten!'

Uh ... hasn't she earned it too?

What I find so funny is the non-stop inconsistency. Ivanovic powers through Tokyo without dropping a set. Then loses in the first round, retiring one game from defeat(she couldn't just stand then and let Pavlyuchenkova serve it out? Seriously?).

Then all the comebacks, and now Woz drops the second set to Navarro after easily rolling her last week. Players have good and bad days, but my goodness. It's flip a coin with so many of these.

It is a different situation entirely. Radwanska has been in the top ten for a number of years. Halep entered the top ten in 2013 when players such as Serena, Victoria and Maria were absent or injured. She also was able to inflate her ranking by playing and winning smaller events without the best players present. IMO Halep does NOT belong in the number two ranking spot.

I am sure you like Halep and I know she has a lot of fans but I am not one of them and I like most of the players in the top 10-20.

Actually I'm not a particular fan of Halep. I like most of the Top 10 more than her. But other players being absent or injured is their fault. She's done more than do well at small events, as I'm sure you know. I don't have to like her to understand that she has a slam final, semi, and quarter this year to go with her other achievements. She's earned the #2 spot ... maybe she'll go down to three, and hasn't played well lately, but objectively the situations aren't different at all.

Bouchard fights back against another power player in Barthel. Riske next for her. That was tough and uneven, ugly at times, but she prevailed.

Amazing:
---
Though it may not have come the way she wanted, Cornet - who beat Williams at Dubai and Wimbledon this year - is the first player to beat her three times in a season since Justine Henin in 2007.
----

This is Sharapova and Kvitova's tournament to lose. I'd love to see Garcia or Muguruza taking it, but have no experience ...

The "walking step," the stepping-in move that made it for Muguruza in the match with Halep:

Kvitova seems to be the only top player to come to Wuhan in decent form. At least that's how it looks after 2r matches.

In Montreal, was very up and down in terms of serving at the most critical of moments: sensitive to pressure. I'd be a bit reserved, but wish her best.

Other upsets:

Alison Riske (USA) d [11] Sara Errani (ITA) | 6 - 4 | 6 - 4 |

Karolina Pliskova (CZE) d [16] Andrea Petkovic (GER) | 6 - 4 | 6 - 4 |

Elina Svitolina (UKR) d Sabine Lisicki (GER) | 7 - 6 (3) | 6 - 3 |

CoCo Vandeweghe (USA) d [10] Jelena Jankovic (SRB)

Radwanska has always been prone to upsets every once in a while, and losing to an incredibly talented player like Garcia is not exactly embarrassing.
Earlier this yer some already predicted she would start descending the rankings, and then she won the Rogers Cup in pretty convincing fashion.

Her crafty game is easily written off as powerless against the stronger/taller players, yet she proves on a regular basis that she can outsmart them if they're not completely on top of their game.

I suspect Radwanska has a couple more good years left, probably balancing around position 5-15, especially since her game is not paraticularly taxing on the body.

I do wish she would put more effort into her fitness, and most of all her attitude, which sucks IMO.
