Reggae legend Bob Marley put on a great show with his band The Wailers when I was lucky enough to see them one evening while on a business trip to Cleveland. His survivors have kept his creative spirit going at their very popular Universal Studios Orlando CityWalk restaurant and nightclub.
Mockingbird is a great tune written and recorded in the 1960s by the sister/brother act Inez & Charlie Foxx. It was also covered soon after by Dusty Springfield and then a year later by Aretha Franklin. In the early 70s, the most popular cover of the tune was recorded by wife/husband Carly Simon and James Taylor.
James Taylor, a former English cricketer, had to retire from the game at age 26 due to a heart condition called arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). Vigorous exercise can exacerbate the condition, and may cause sudden death.
Sudden death can also be caused by commotio cordis, a condition occurring as a result of a blunt blow to the chest. Said blow, if struck at exactly the wrong time in the heart’s electrical cycle, can trigger ventricular fibrillation.
Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, typically of rapid onset. It is a type of pharyngitis. Symptoms may include sore throat, fever, enlargement of the tonsils, trouble swallowing, and large lymph nodes around the neck.
Dec 1 in 1964, Ringo Starr was forced to take a 12 days absence from The Beatles (allowing Jimmy Nicol a brief gig and a lifelong pickup line) to undergo a medical procedure. The culprit? Tonsillitis. Starr's predicament might not have been as dire due to his duty as a drummer (not primary vocalist) but the condition, which causes the swelling of the tonsils, has struck many a performer.
A performer used to working on a movie set, Errol Flynn supposedly developed a bad case of “stage” fright when he was signed to be a guest on Sid Caesar’s live TV variety show. A young staffer under Mr. Caesar was given the responsibility of keeping Flynn under check in the evenings in NYC while the weeklong rehearsals were taking place during the day. That staffer, Mel Brooks, had his hands full and recounted their antics, including getting Flynn over his stage fright for the Saturday evening live airing. The story made for a great film called My Favorite Year with Peter O’Toole playing Flynn and Mark Linn-Baker playing Brooks. Richard Benjamin directed the great comedy.
Great Comedy Films Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Funny Movies is a book by Chris LaMont, published in 2016. It weighs 3.2 pounds. Incidently that's the same weight as the most technically advanced bow ever offered by Diamond Archery, the Deploy SB. The lightweight Deploy SB features an aerospace-inspired carbon riser, for minimal weight and maximum impact.
Outside The Lines has been in the ESPN lineup on a daily basis for many years. The 30-minute weekday afternoon format of investigative journalism and discussion of current breaking stories was hosted by legendary ESPN anchor Bob Ley until he retired recently. It was still being presented until the pandemic situation adjusted scheduling at the sports broadcasting giant.
Tennis legend Virginia Wade once said this about tennis: "It’s difficult for most people to imagine the creative process in tennis. Seemingly it’s just an athletic matter of hitting the ball consistently well within the boundaries of the court. That analysis is just as specious as thinking that the difficulty in portraying King Lear on stage is learning all the lines."
"End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path. One that we all must take." This is a quote from Tolkien's The Return of the King. Although I have read quite a few books, especially when I studied English and American Literature, I have never read anything by Tolkien. I haven't watched the movies based on his books either.
Joker, the extra card found in every modern card deck today is believed to be dating back to the 1860s. It is believed that the card was invented by American players who decided to introduce a trump card while changing the rules of the game. The joker has been known by several different names in the past centuries, like the jolly joker or the best bower. http://cardshistory.com/joker-card-history.htm
And we would go on as though nothing was wrong
And hide from these days we remained all alone
Staying in the same place, just staying out the time
Touching from a distance
Further all the time
The times we are living in right now are straight out a dystopian fantasy with grotesque public figures running roughshod over centuries old democratic values. Orwell, Bradbury and/or Huxley would be hard pressed to imagine the lead characters in this very diabolical assault on world institutions.
"The times we are living in right now are straight out a dystopian fantasy with grotesque public figures running roughshod over centuries old democratic values. Orwell, Bradbury and/or Huxley would be hard pressed to imagine the lead characters in this very diabolical assault on world institutions," said Tom. I agree.
‘Crazy Daisy’ is a Shasta daisy cultivar that typically grows 2-2.5’ tall. It is noted for its large double blooms (2.5” diameter) with frilly, twisted white rays and yellow center disks, and blooms most of the summer.
Mediation takes many forms, one of which is the charette. This format of community interaction involves meetings and discussion involving parties on opposite sides of divisive issues communicating in the hope of reaching agreeable recommendations for resolution of the differences. A famous charette occurred in the early 1970s in Raleigh NC regarding still simmering school desegregation problems. The 2019 film The Best of Enemies celebrates the harmony reached by black activist Ann Atwater and local KKK leader C.P. Ellis. They became lifelong friends after burying the hatchet and finding common ground.
Comedians that made their mark from being part of The Golden Age of Television include two of my all-time favorites Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks, lifelong friends that met while creating for Sid Caesar’s Show of Shows.
Lyon is considered by most to be France’s second city (third in size behind Paris and Marseille) but first in the stomachs of gastronomic experts. The city is located in the nation’s rich agricultural zone of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Tennis enthusiasts know it also as the corporate headquarters for a very large racquet/string/apparel manufacturer.
