About a year ago I demoed a Yonex Ezone 98 from TW. Prior to that I was hitting with an old Prince Triple Threat Graphite MP (27.5") 16 x 18. Massive 355 swing weight, but not a ton of power, low maneuverability. Coming to the Ezone 98 the power was fantastic, the weight was far appealing, and the spin was more noticeable. However, more than I would have liked I'd be shanking the ball with the racquet on my forehand. I tend to whip the racquet, brushing the ball, rather than hit flat... sometimes... depending on the incoming shot. I believe that in trying to keep the ball from sailing past the baseline, I was compensating for the higher launch angle by adding spin to arc the trajectory. I tried tightening the string tension, and at the time was using Wilson NXT Duramax 15 or 16 gauge multifilament at mid-range tension (52 - 53 lbs.). I eventually gave on up it and demoed the Head Speed Pro 2022 after reading about benefits of an 18 X 20 string pattern (more control). It seemed to give the response in control that I wanted, but lost power. Obviously, these are two different racquets on many levels, but I wonder if I can get the best of both worlds with different strings or combinations of strings. On the Speed Pro I've been using Head Velocity MLT or Technifibre NRG 2 at 54-55 lbs. I tried going lower tension as low as 49, and the control just seemed to dwindle. I've liked the feel of the multifilament thus far on my arm.
I recently went back and played again with the Ezone for fun because I've worked on technique quite a bit over the past year and thought I might have more inherent control and be more cognizant about making slight alterations to swing style. I was able to not have sailing forehands, but still felt I couldn't get as much precision as I do from the Speed Pro. I've read that certain poly and even multifilament strings are designed for control. So, I'm wondering if anyone's had any experience with that on the Ezone 98? Or, has anyone found a string with more power on the Speed Pro that's kept the control?
