Hey guys, DR98 is on my shortlist to demo and I was just wondering how the paint quality is? I've heard some Yonex racquets chip paint really easily...have you noticed that with the DR98?

I have a matched pair of DR100s. The paint seems no worse than any paint on my other sticks-all Wilson. It doesn't chip easily. I have a few scrapes and chips from collisions with the court and my partner's racquet, but other than that---SUPERIOR STICK.

The paint chips easier than some of my other Yonex frames, but the DR has a more matte finish where the other ones are glossy. Also, my TT95 chips even worse than the DR

I have been using DR98 for the past couple of months, switched from PS97. Love the DR, one of the best. But yes, the paint chips. It was a very light drop when I was taking it out from the bag, 2ft from the floor. On an other nots, I like the yellow frame better than the blue, maybe got used to this.

Mostly strung with HEAD SONIC PRO 1.30 mm/GAUGE 16 at 22/23 kilos which is approx. 48/51 lbs.

I am a 6.0 / 6.5 NTRP nationally ranked and starting playing ITF Futures qualies. Studying at the college now.

I have tested over 25 frames recently and really could not decide which one to choose. Then I tried Yonex and found out that the best performance gave me this Yonex EZONE DR 100 300 g. However, I am a little bit affraid of the higher stiffness index 69. Have any of you guys experienced some arm troubles? I know that the swingweight is at solid 326 , but I am still asking. The static weight just might be to low for my game level - national and futures player.

I was in a similar quandary two months ago regarding this racquet. After much consideration and discussion, I have finally recovered from TE, I arranged to have two Dr100s that were matched and then weighted up. It's more stable, more head light, more solid and has been kind to my elbow. Did you demo it extensively. I took three trips with the DR100 before buying them.

I've played with the DR 98 a fair amount now. I really love it, delighted I made the switch. Swings well, manoeuvrable, I can find my angles and hit hard with spin, and the directional control and power I'm getting on serve, comfortably and consistently, is very satisfying. It's heavy enough not to be pushed around, but I can get the whip and racquet head speed I want without tiring in long matches. Absolutely knocked it out the park with this racquet for me, I am delighted to be back in the Yonex fold. Silverstring at 53/51, might go lower next time, had this set in for a while and the racquet continues to play better and better.

My thoughts exactly on this frame. Its such a great frame in so many situations.

Did you try the DR 98 ? ... more weight, excellent control and stiffness index if I'm correct is lower, also give it a try with the Yonex poly tour pro string you will see what a performance racket this is. I used to play competitive when younger had shoulder issues, this Yonex setup is really helping to get my level back ... I can even serve faster shots even with my shoulder issue.

They definetely feel different. I got both costomized to same balance and SW at ~340g static. When I pick AI, it's juicy at impact with that flexing/pocketing feel. However, they produce same balls for we, and on the long run with one I cannot say I keep the feel of different experience - only if interchanging them within one day or through closer in time sessions.

I believe the weight is too low stock, especially for a player like you. If you add a leather grip and some lead at 9-3, you can get a more stable and more headlight balance that worked well for me with the 98. Also, string it in the low 50's. This will give you the best performance and will be very comfortable. It's pretty string sensitive and I find that it works best with a full bed of shaped poly. Solinco Revolution 16L @ 52/50 is the best set up I've had in it since I bought it when it was released.

Hi again it was some time sins i was here, ive been playing some games and tried different setups with leadtape.

But , my last game i was back to stockweight and no lead at all. And it felt amazing, great maneuverable, power, spin, control, when i first tested this racket i felt some instability on my returns but not now.

I use a rubberband as a dampener, and removed the original grip and use 2 overgrip instead.

Im totally happy with the racket now and definetly going to buy the blue edition.

Well... Made the switch yesterday from AI98's to these bad boys and so far so good. The string is the new Yonex Poly Tour Air125 which is a far harder string than the Poly Pro Tour 125 which I've been using for the past few years. Looks great but will be going back to PTP I think.

Overall differences over the AI so far have been positive - definitely feels crisper and more solid with volleys and weirdly more manoeuvrable which I don't really get.
Concern is how my shoulder / arm will fare after extended play as that was the main draw of the AI... No arm problems for 2 years.

Still - amazing looking paint job regardless!

I have been using a matched, customized pair of DR100s since August and have played the best tennis I have played in the last two years. Yes, they are a little stiff and off-center ball strikes are not fun (thankfully that doesn't happen too often). I have power, spin, control and precision. My previous racquet was a BLX Blade 98 and prefer the DR100s for a number of reasons. The balance, the enormous sweet spot, the ability to bail myself out on defense and blistering flat serves followed by kickers or sliders that one opponent described as "nasty."

Yes, "low" tension is a must for the DR. 51 or 52 is a great start to try, also try having the crosses a little looser than the mains.

I've recently switched to the DR100 but I am having a tough time adjusting to it. I previously played with the Textreme Warrior 100. I seem to be mishitting a lot. Or so it feels like it. Is this because of the difference in head shapes or something? By looking at my strings, it seems like I am making contact smack dab in the middle of the racquet. With my warriors, I was making contact higher up, toward the hoop. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, any tips? Thanks!

I bought DR 98 and hopefully receive it this weekend unstrung. I want to ask if the -5% cross tension still applies on DR line as I've seen some post on older yonex rackets. This is my 1st yonex racket and haven't demo or hit before because it's not available to our area. Coming from PAT w/c recently hurts my arm (That sudden release of blue version at the right moment as it magnetize my money instantly), and have history playing with APD GT 2010 and BLX 6.1 Tour w/c I like the feeling and control but not much pop.

I'm planning to string my DR 98 as:

RPM Blast 17 @52lbs main / Synthetic 16G @54lbs cross
RS Lyon 17 @52lbs main / Synthetic 16G @54lbs cross
RS Lyon 17 @52lbs main / RS Lyon 17@50lbs cross

Currently, those are the string I have experience and I don't have luxury getting different types of strings as shipping is expensive to try too diff kinds of strings.

In my opinion its when you hit an off centre shot and the racquet moves around in your hand more than you'd normally expect.
Could be totally wrong though!!

I've now been playing a fair bit with mine and think I've found the sweet spot in terms of set up.
Stock I was finding it was moving through the air too quickly and totally messed up my timing on ground strokes.. 6g of lead added to the throat has transformed things massively. Real test will come tonight after 2-3 hours of singles but so far in doubles its been great.

Sharing my experience with adding mass to the throat - I did it matching my AI98 and DR98. The latter was more polarized, so while I picked almost same mass for the hoop (at 10 and 2, roughly), AI got blu tak at the bottom of hadle, and DR - at the top, where it splits for the throat. Acquired ~same SW, static weight and balance.
Now moving to DRs I'm going to move it to the buttcap, maybe with slight loss of static and lowering the balance point a tiny bit, to keep the swing similar. Will see how it goes.

Let's keep in mind that we are splitting hairs here when comparing racquets. I also string the AI at 55lbs and this feeling may be less noticeable with a lower tension.

It's begining to make sense now. There's been a trend with using pencil grips to increase spin, but using such a small grip on a frame with a flexible throat causes off center hit fluttering.

I play with a grip size normal for my hand and don't feel any flutter with off center shots. Since the DR98 is stiffer in the throat, it works better with pencil grip players.

The DR98 is at the very light end of what's usually considered a players frame. I think if you don't play against hard hitters, the stock weight should be fine.

If you do play against hard hitters, then I see the DR98 needing some lead at 3 and 9 o'clock or maybe 2 and 10 o'clock if you want a higher swingweight.

My son (15 years old at the time) had never heard of Yonex. He was sold on the popular racket brands that all the kids seem to use at tourneys.

One day, I got 4 demos for him to try during his lesson. He picked up the other 3 and I almost had to make him try the DR 98. Well, a year later and he will not put it down. I have let him several of the new rackets out there and he always goes back to the DR 98. The interesting part is he used to string his old racket at 60#s all poly and he is down to 52#s (and maybe going lower) with this racket. He uses Hyper G 17.

Since then, there are several members of our club that have moved to the DR 98. They tried his racket and were sold on it. If I was still in my 30s, I know it would be my racket on choice.

Now if I could only convince him that my Propulse 4 shoes that I stocked up on are the best shoes out there...
He is pretty stuck on Asics.

Why wouldn't you want to use it beyond your 30's? Seems like a good racquet for just about any older age group given that it's on the light end of a player's racquet, stable, and easy on the arm.

I moved on to a lighter racket when I hit my mid 40s. I played with the PK K5 for years but it finally got to where it got heavy to swing after 30 minutes. Have moved on to the Organix V1 which has a lower SW and I can play 5 days a week without fatigue. I am trying the new Dunlop 100 Tour and really like it even though it is heavier. Still messing with strings and tension but it is a really nice racket.

About come to the conclusion I need a racket with a low swing weight around 300-310. Have tried so many rackets the past 5 years and I always seem to move towards a lower SW racket. I also have found I like a 100-102 racket with my 2 handed backhand.

They come with Rpm Blast 16 strung at 25kg, it was one of the strings the seller had that i knew plays well in my current Blades 18*20.
They first one weighs 322 and the second tips between 322 and 324, the scale is in 2 gram steps so pretty close.

Thought I would throw this question out to the DR community...I'm demoing the DR98 and the Tour G 310g. I'm liking them both, but I'm finding that they play pretty similar. While they are similar spec-wise, I expected more difference in play. Am I missing something?

And as a follow up, what about the Duel G 310 vs the DR98?

got a couple demo DR98 and Tour G 310 as well from TW. Think they're both strung with poly tour pro yellow? The Tour G 310 imo is a bit easier to handle cause of the lower swingweight.

I expected a crisper response/feedback from the DR98 when I hit with it since it got compared to the PD Tour or APD but it's definitely more muted than I expected. It's not bad since I've been hitting with flexy frames lately anyways... I can try putting in a crisper string if I want more feedback if I decide to get one.

I got plenty of depth and control on both sides @ baseline. I think I noticed the bigger sweetspot from isometric shape cause none of my shots felt that off center. Not sure how heavy I hit them since I mainly played doubles and didn't rally too much. I liked serves on the Tour G better and I'm sure thats a result of the lower SW cause I have some shoulder weakness.

Sorta feels like I'm in a honeymoon period with it but very stable and solid for a sub 12oz racket since I usually played with much heavier frames.

So Tempting to get 2 DR Blues and Tour Gs...

After reading this thread more closely i understand that i also must have gotten racquets at 304-ish unstrung, since they "only" weigh 322 strung.
I guess its no problem they are after all very close each other in specs unlike my black Blade 98:s wich differ more,so it should be easy to lead them up similar if needed,but on the other hand i suspect it also mean i more probably will need to lead them up slightly.

I have only hit once with mine so far so this is just my first impression, coming from Blade 98 18*20 2013 version,and the short version is that its more powerful, but with very good control and more spin. My opponent said he had trouble "getting the ball", as in get there in time and be able to "do something" with it, since i got better depth and pace, than normal.

I hit a couple of backhands long by a feet,that I felt i would have made normally,so i need to control them better and / or spin more to make them dip faster, but on forehand it was no problem, in fact my forehand is slower than my backhand so the extra length/pace was good there.

I also have a single handed backhand.

Im playing tomorrow again so ill be back with more feedback after that.

I actually hurt my arm yesterday,i think it was when serving from the motion,not vibrations,since there are hardly any.

It feels like its the triceps attachment on the elbow side when i try to do a triceps exercise, and nothing when i grip something hard as with a usual tennis elbow,this makes me more convinced i f*cked up while serving.

The only other things i think it can be is:

A) Different weight/balance, the Blade i was using is 20grams heavier,with different balance.
B) Handle shape,the Wilsons are more flared and prevents you from sliding the racquet to far out,and therefore makes it off balance and sw more, i found myself holding the racquet with the buttcap inside my hand more than once.

So,what i have done is;

A) Weighed it up to around 346grams strung,with og and dampener, about 8-10 in handle and ~7 at 3 and 9 total.
B) Taped up the buttcap a bit with an old og cut in half width in a few steps to make it more Wilson-ish, to prevent me from sliding it out too long.
C) Changed OG to a tackier one,to make it easier to hold looser. I had a Dunlop one on first but changed to a Toalson.

I really hope i can heal my arm and continue to use this racquet,atleast to make a full test of it.

I've been using the dr98 for a while now. I demo'ed a good amount of racquets before settling with the dr98.

I use Revolution 18g strung at 55lbs.
It's works really well for me as long as the strings last. They start blowing out after a few hours.

Anyways yes the paint chips really easily on them. I have 4x dr98's in my bad and they all chip. It's odd because I'm used to the paint slowly sanding off when dragged, but this racquet physically chips off.

The biggest gripe I have with it is the head guard. What is up with the plastic on it. I just ordered the head guard gromet kits in bulk. The way they wear down is so odd, it annoys the crap out of me. The ends tear and start lifting on the edges. I will take a picture later. I know this is a long shot but does anyone make an aftermarket head guard for this thing. I can't stand the plastics on it. Oh yeah also when you take the gromet and head guard off, the paint chips on every hole. Lol

Yonex needs to do something about this. It drives me nuts. The head guard is deemed useless after a few matches for me. And it distracts me while I'm playing. lol I blame it on my weak mental game, OCD, and my ADHD.

I've been using my DR98 for about 2weeks now. This is a good stick, the control is superb. It has low launch angle so it take a while to get used to it specially coming from Pure Aero Tour and APD GT 2010. The feel is muted, adding dampener may have negative effect on your feel as it will feel so muted that you can't connect to the ball, don't use one if you want a balance of feel and dampened feeling.

My only gripe on this racket, and I messed it up big time, is the grip. The grip itself feels different maybe because of round shape, then I replaced the stock grip to wilson leather grip w/c I usually do on my previous racket to enhance the feel, but that's when bad things starts to happen. The stock grip is so thin and so light, that adding a leather grip will increase the grip size, plus the overgrip it may feel increased a 1 full size. The weight of stock grip L2 size w/ finishing tape is 9g only, compared to babolat's around 16g, so adding wilson leather grip's 22-23g, it will significantly increase the static weight and increase HL significantly on DR98, this will result to little room for further weight customization if you are targeting a little over 12oz and no chance if you still want sub 12oz. I customize it further adding 1g at 12o'clock, 4g total so 2g per side on 9 and 3oclock position and gave me 12.2oz or 346g strung (306g stock grip unstrung). It still feels unbalanced to me so I want to bring back the stock grip, but it's messed up a little, yonex glued the stock grip tightly on handle like they paint the glue on the handle and no adhesive tape attached to stock grip, some of stock grip is ripped a little trying to removed it before. So please be aware when removing the stock grip as it's very light and thin, I'm waiting for my kimony techni leather and hopefully this will do the trick as it's thin based on their website, and also light.

One more thing, please somebody confirm, the handle w/o stock grip is bigger than babolat and wilson, that's why I thought they attached very thin stock grip to make it similar in size w/ other racket brand, and that's when I thought babolat's grip is bigger than other brand. The round feel of the handle is because the bevel 2 and 6 is shorter compared to babolat so it's easier to feel (using leather grip) the bevels when switching to grips during play on babolat's grip, or maybe this is the effect of grip suddenly became bigger that's why I can't really get the feel of bevels on DR98.

Overall, the racket is good it's just tricky to find a similar thickness and weight replacement grip if you plan to change it specially if you're gearing to leather. Btw, I don't know the exact thickness of stock grip, and can't compare to other thin synthetic since I don't used it, but for wilson leather, feels like wilson is twice as thick or 1.5 thicker, but please correct me or give us some thickness details.

Many have said that yonex grips do play a big larger but I'm surprised you considered the stock grip thin...I feel like its thick and it gets thinner with a leather grip. It might be the grip shape too as the yonex grip shape is more square like the Wilson grip unlike the Babolats and some Heads which can be more rectangular.

I'd use a Babolat SkinFeel grip if you're looking for a replacement thin/light grip.

I saw that thread too, but I do recheck the size and size by eye on the ruler, looks like 1mm to slight more than 1mm in thickness and that's with a cotton like substance on the middle that act as cushioning. Btw, my DR98 is the blue version and this is my 1st yonex stick so I have no idea about their stock grip previously. As in reference for Babolat's stock grip, it's more cushioned and thicker than the wilson leather grip, and based on the thread 1.90mm on babolat syntec pro for Pure Aero Tour compared to 1.6-1.7mm of wilson leather. I'm not sure about Babolat Syntec of my old APD GT 2010 but I know it's thicker than wilson. I change to leather usually to decrease the grip a little to compensate when I add overgrip, and also I like the firm feel of the leather on contact compared to smushy cushioned synthetic grip.

Did they any chance changed the grip? I don't see DR98's stock grip on the list but not sure if it's the same as the other model like VCore, Ai or Rdis on the list in the thread.
