the one i'm playing with now has a leather grip. i really like the feel of it w/ the leather grip. Without the leather grip, how sluggish would it feel? What does a dr 98 feel w/o the leather grip? and how much of a difference in maneuverability does the leather grip have on this racquet?

Any weight added increases stability. I prefer traditionally headlight balance and don't feel the head needs more weight for plow.
Happy that works for you i need more plow. With synthetic grip the balance of my dr is 31,6mm already too headlight for its weight

Removing weight (the leather grip in this case) will not make a racquet less maneuverable. I just prefer the final weight/ball feel/balance with a leather grip. Some prefer the original grip. You will need to experiement and see for yourself - it's all personal preference.

You have to try and see what works for you best, it helps with maneuverability for sure

Have you tried adding lead gradually or did you go for a few grams straight off?

It is all personal... so the best thing to do is try it for your self.

I say this because I agree with aspects of what both @Shangri La and @Nick777 have said. I felt that I would like a tad more stability in the head of the DR 98 (which further increased the sweet spot), but I also added a leather grip and further weight in relevant areas, which made the racquet heavier but still maneuverable...

My dr had a leather grip when i brought it second hand, I had tennis elbow at the time (hence me buying a dr) anyhow after looking at many reviews it would appear leather grips are not good for people with TE. I removed it and put a "Wilson comfort' one on. it feels a lot more comfortable and ii don't believe it effects maneverability at all.

Good to know...

i'm currently playing two over grips no grip at the moment, will see if it hurts my arm, got some normal grips ordered. it will be interesting to see if any of the similar specs coming out this year can compare or even better this racket, got my eye on Pure Strike 2.0, New Ezone and Clash 98

Got a few strings left over and want to use them up before I spend any more money (as if I will be that disciplined!). Has anyone tried any of the below and what are your thoughts on what is best or worth using in this racket from the list?
Tourna Quasi Gut Armor
Head Velocity MLT
RS Lyon
Solinco Hyper G
Wilson Sensation
Wilson Ultra Synthetic Gut

I am joining the EZONE DR CLUB!!!

I am coming back from a 6-month break from tennis due to significant tendon damage in my elbow. Had previously played with the Pure Strike for the past two years. I have been searching and searching for a racquet that performs like the PS but doesn't come with such a high stiffness rating.

I tried the VCORE Pro 97 310 last week and it felt like I had to swing for the fences to get any type of significant pace.

I talked with a TW racquet expert yesterday and he indicated that if you are looking for an arm friendly Pure Strike the Yonex EZONE DR 98 is the way to go. So I went and I have three coming my way.

I am hoping it offers more power than what I felt with the Pro 97.

Also, I am right in between a 3/8 and a 1/2 for grip size. I was using a 3/8 with my Babolat's but was told to bump up to 1/2. Going to a Yonex, doesn't it make since to go with a 3/8 since they are suppose to be bigger than other company's frames?

Interested in your thoughts there. I think it should have more power.

Yes. I would be curious as well . TW reviews mentions stifness multiple times... when those guys say stiff then I'm out... also you may miss the control a bit as well.

I dont think its that stiff, so you should be good. Hopefully they make a new version as it's one of Yonex's most popular frames. The newer one is not really the same racquet so it basically makes these versions very tough to track down. Thats why I went with the Vcore. I also prefer the old school feel and control.

I actually assumed it's really the new ezone... yes.. DR has nothing but praise.. I tried to get one of these myself couple of months ago but it's too hard to come by... I love my vcore pro97. No complaints here

So.. in this day and age, is the DR98 still worth getting? Compared to say a VCore Pro 97?
Wondering the same... especially the new prince TT100s have that all in one package and comfort....
I actually think vcore pro97 is a slightly different ball game.. requires more from the user

It is worth it if you can pick a second hand one up in good condition for around $100. If you want new then look elsewhere, I'd demo the Prince range even the Beast 98. The new Pure Strike 98 is a little stiff but is a very similar line, new Blade 98 too.

Thats the question I want to try and answer since I have a vcore 97 with a leather grip and a little lead. If I got a DR and put leather on it, it would spec out basically the same, so I’d be able to make a nice comparison.

Seems like the TW DR98 is just backstock since they only have 1/2 grip size. Not sure where to track down a used one besides here or the Bay. But then if it ends up being a better fit, how do I find more? This model was one of the most popular YY frames I can remember. I see a lot of players using them and it was highly rated by TW here.

Thing about the Vcore is it feels fantastic and I really love it, so this would just be a fun little comparison over time.

@TW Staff - is the DR being reissued or do you know if there is a new model coming out?

There is a new Ezone at somepoint in the next year, same line but will be a bit different of course, like the current one. TBH if you like your current racket stick with it and just get more and more comfortable with it, DRs aren't easy to get esp in grip size you want anymore.

I think they are due this year, no?

I guess there's a few people in this thread that say Yonex is a little larger size than regular. Maybe a hard pass...

You can replace the yonex grip with thin tourna thin or prince resi thin to go down a size if you wanted to but I have a feeling new princes are probably just as good if not better... new tours are super solid..they do everything well... all around great combo of modern/players etc with comfort...

Yeah thats the plan. I like the Vcore a ton. Just interested in the differences as I am fine tuning my game a little and it’s good timing to check. The DR98 with a leather grip is basically the specs I want in my 310 with leather. Difference is I needed to add lead on the 310 get there.

Is it the same base grip and grip shape as the vcore 97?

Good question .. dont know actually.. I dont have DR..and even though I contemplated a bit here.. I will wait for the new version. As you said if they are smart, they would bring everything about DR back to new model. Btw.. those replacement grips are used to go down a size commonly.

Yeah the TW leather grip in the 1.3mm version is great for replacing the base yonex grip on the VCORE Pro. Doesn’t make it feel bigger. I would imagine they would have to make a new DR version, it seems like the most popular frame Yonex came out with in a long time. I had the ai 98 and liked it a lot as an all rounder, but the feel was a little hollow and odd. I read that the DR fixed that, but I never tried it.

$199 is expensive for a racquet? Seems like all major brands are north of $200 for new frames.

I was told TW somehow picked up about 100 new EZONE DR98’s. I picked up three 3/8 sticks.
I considered it expensive because it's an old and discontinued stick. However due to the hype, I don't blame TW for selling them at the price.

How did you get 3/8?

Understood. When I ordered mid last week they still had 4+ 3/8’s left. When I checked back Thursday they only had 1/2’s left.

Honestly I am looking for no other reacquet at the moment... vcore pro97 is perfect for me.. all I want is my elbow to cooperate.. the only reason I contemplated dr98 possibly for comfort but then again prince tours are awesome all arounders that i am confident that my elbow can take.. I played excessively with VCP last week... with full bed of poly.. and my forearm went pretty sore. I still have to figure out whether excessive play or the racquet.. or poly.. strung the VCP with velocity this weekend and so far so good. Fingers crossed.. sorry didnt mean to derail the thread with VCP stuff..

Both the 98 and 97 are very comfortable frames for me luckily. That said an arm injury is real personal and there are many reasons it can happen. If you dont have one already, try a flexbar. They are miracle workers.

I have after maybe a decade of intense loyalty to O3, speedport, and Textreme Prince frames moved on to a new weapon.

I’ve been in love with the Yonex EZONE 100 300g.
I was actually interested in the DR Blue 100 plus but just wasn’t connecting with my shots.

What I love most about the EZONE 100 Green/Black is the right mixture of dampened feel (without a dampener) and also that controlled response feeling.
I have no problem moving from textreme warrior right to the EZONE.

So yea. I’ve like so many have left prince. I stayed for a long time tho.
