Yonex on Tour

Just spent two days at Citi Open qualifying. Mostly interested in seeing pros practice. Few observations:

1. Saw a lot of Yonex being used
2. Most of these had the Red Vcore paint job. I know a lot pros use other racquets with a paint job the racquet company is trying to promote, but I saw some of the racquets up close and they had the aero-dynamic ridges of the new Vcore. Did not see any Ezones or Black vcores. Kyrgios uses old XI 98, with Ezone paint job
3. Almost none of the Yonex pros use a dampener. I use a Vcore 98 Plus, cut down to 27.25inches (don't know why more people don't do this), but I can't imagine NOT using a dampener. I normally use the worm dampener on mine but I tried hitting for an hour without I thought my teeth were chattering from the vibrations going up my arm.

Try hitting the sweet spot.

I've considered it, but that is 'too final' to me, meaning I'd have a hard time selling it a year or two down the line. What I'll likely do is extend my Galaxy Black 1/4" and see how it plays vs the full 1/2" '+'.

Actually, I've had no problem selling 3 Yonex DR 100 Plus, cut down 1/4. It just makes a lot of sense

Not surprising. From my golfing days, they found that the only difference in feel, which so many golfers swear by, is SOUND.

I seem to recall an article in golfdigest, where they found out or referred to research, that the perceived superior feel of forged blades is down to how they sound. Iirc, this is also true for f.inst. food (research based): we judge the crispiness of potato chips on how they sound, and not how they feel.

I stopped using dampener about a year ago, and I have absolutely no issues. Feel is so much better. Big dampeners, such as the Yonex one, mutes the feel of the stringbed on impact, for sure.

The pro's frames probably have silicone injected inside and other mods which absorb annoying ping sounds.

I find most frames need them, occasionally they don't.

How does it make a lot of sense pray tell?
The Yonex Vcore 98 red is a perfect example. The Plus has a swingweight of 340, which is way too high for 95%+ of players, including myself while I do enjoy the power and feel, I just can't get it into position as quickly as I like. The regular 98 however has a swingweight of 322, which is too light for me, plus I don't get the extended length power. However, when you cut the Plus down to 27.25 (right in between the two), the swingweight is 330, which is just perfect for me and probably many others. In addition, you also get the extra reach and power of that extra quarter inch, which DOES make a difference. But the fact is racquet manufacturers and retailers won't want to offer an in-between 27.25 version in adddition to the standard and Plus version, since that is more inventory they have to carry. So, I do it myself.
