Upgrading my current stringing machine (Alpha Axis 2003 w/ Wise 2086) that I’ve had for 17 years. I’m looking to spend around $5,000-$6,000 and leaning towards a Yonex Precision 5.0. Wanted to see if anyone owns, has used one or has any thoughts on any other machines at that price point.

I've used the Precision 5.0, and I don't think it's a great machine, or a good value. It's not better than the other machines coming from Taiwanese factories. The Precision 9.0 (made in Japan) is totally different in a good way, but also more $.

Instead of buying the Precision 5.0 for $5000 or $6000, think about buying a Baiardo L for $3500.

I’d love to have a Precision 9.0 or any machine from ToyoZouki, but not sure if I want to drop that amount of cash. Could be worth it though.

I’ve used the Baiardo L and it’s not a bad machine at all, but I’d rather get a Yonex machine as I get great pricing with Yonex. Thanks for the info about the Precision 5.0, much appreciated!

If you're spending 5-6k for that yonex you're not getting a great deal on that machine. The other machines made in the same factory go for 3-3.5k. Head, Alpha, or Dunlop would be a better value. Same internals just different branding.

@SavvyStringer I’m looking to spend around 5-6k total, but get better pricing with Yonex, so I’d prefer to go with them if they have a quality machine with a mid-range price tag. Sounds like this isn’t the case. Even if the Precision 5.0 costs me 3k but isn’t high quality, I’d rather have a better machine with another brand. So, any input for a high-quality 5-6k machine is much appreciated. Thanks!

5-6 is still going to leave you short on the top end yonex but would put you well in range of a Baiardo or Tecnifibre ergo. Then it becomes personal preference based. Having used both, I prefer the Baiardo. I like the height adjustability and have gotten used to the tilted table.

I definitely degree. The Prince 7000, Yonex Precision 5.0, Head and Dunlop stringing machines coming out of the same factories in Taiwan are pretty steep. IMHO paying those prices for those machines, it's ok quality for a premium price. For similar money, a Baiardo would be better than a Precision 5.0. Another option is going for the Baiardo L and saving $1500 ($3500 v $5000) which would be available for other things if needed.

Good stuff guys. Looks like all roads point to Baiardo. Thanks for all the info and advice, much appreciated!

The mashup clay-colored Baiardos Wilson used at the FO had features of the Baiardo and the Baiardo L. They had the base, stand, and tension module of the Baiardo, the turntable of the Baiardo L, the clamp bases of the Baiardo, and the clamps of the Baiardo L. IMHO that's almost perfect. I'd want the base and stand of the Baiardo L, the tension module of the Baiardo, the turntable of the Baiardo L, the clamp bases of the Baiardo, and the clamps of the Baiardo L.

Sounds like a near-perfect Baiardo. Any idea where or when one of these can be purchased? Or was this just a custom job for Roland Garros?

AFAIK it was a custom job for Roland Garros. I think, as usual, Wilson sold the Baiardos used on-site at RG. But who knows, maybe they didn't find buyers for every single machine, so it could be worth reaching out to Wilson to see whether any are still available.

Wilson has an Instagram channel for Baiardo sales:
