Yonex RDX500 MP Review

Design & Comfort 9.5/10

I have to admit, as much as I love the RDS001, this by far the most beautiful racquet Yonex has ever created. (in my opinion) The combination of reds, blues, oranges, ane etc., truly make this racquet stand out in a crowd. The quality is typical of Yonex, which is truly the cream of the crop.
The cushion grip is ok, but with an overgrip it lacks the feel I like. The RDX500 is one of the most comfortable racquets on the market. With a fairly low flex rate, it seems to catch the ball before tossing it back towards your target. This racquet is very arm-friendly. If you have any elbow pain using the RDX500, then you better check your technique.

Overall - With the exception of the stock grip, this racquet is as good as it gets. Extremely comfortable and pleasant to look at. I changed to a leather grip, and it is just perfect.

Groundstrokes 9/10

I love hitting forehands with this racquet. The buttery feel, upon impact, is amazing. The racquet literally pockets the ball like a glove, and allows you time to pick your target. I was able to generate adequate spin, and never had a problem pinning my opponent deep. The RDX gives me exactly what I put in, no more...no less. The 98" head actually plays more like a 100-105". This lowers the accuracy rate just enough to be noticeable compared to the Mid version. That being said, I was still able to quickly adjust and hit many winners down the line.
Backhands are a dream!! I use one hand, and this racquet fits me perfectly. The spin potential is wonderful, and the feel is just incredible. For those that prefer 2 hands, this racquet will accomodate you as well. It really is a versatile stick. The accuracy level is slightly less than the Mid on backhands as well, but still not enough to worry about.

Overall - Incredible racquet for groundstrokes. The feel of being larger than it is, really gives me confidence to swing all out. I love the fact that I can consistently place the ball deep on my opponent and wait for the opportunity to lay a perfect drop-shot for a winner.

Volleys 8.5/10

Though volleying is very easy with the RDX500, it lacks a little weight to make it a serious weapon at the net. The maneuverability is incredible, being around 8pts HL and having a low swingweight. The feel at the net is really nice. The buttery feel is really noticed while volleying. The racquet, like the RDS001, seems to catch the ball before launching it back at your target. The lack of weight became a factor only against heavy-hitters. They caused the racquet to feel just a tad unstable at the net.

Overall - The feel at the net is as good as it gets, but lacks the weight to handle the heavy-hitters. I truly believe it would be a 10/10 with just a touch of lead-tape at 3 & 9 o'clock.

Serves 8.5/10

I felt very comfortable serving with the RDX500 MP. The pace on my first serves was as good as any other racquet I had tried. Placement was effortless, and the buttery feel was a joy. Second serves were pretty nice, as well. The kick was great due to the spinning ability the RDX contains. My hitting partner made the comment that he had more trouble returning against the RDX than against any of my other racquets. That is great to hear, because serves are usually my weak area.

Overall - While the serving ability is great, I left room for improvement. I am hoping that with the added lead, it will provide even more pace.

Final Thought
The RDX500 MP is truly a racquet that everyone should demo. If you are needing a good stick for every aspect of your game, I believe this will satisfy your hunger. I realy felt more confident using this racquet than any of my current racquets. That includes: RDS001, n6.1 Tour 90, TF320, and the nBlade. Until this point I have been a RDS man, but I believe I have been converted. I know that the added lead will only make a great racquet better!

Total Score 8.9/10

I plan on doing an part 2.

Thanks! I have it strung at 57lbs. I have 2 now, and don't know what the new one is strung at.

Another!!!??? You are the man! :)

Thanks JC! I will be emailing you later on today regarding the Ti-80.

i agree with all of this but the serving... well most of what is described is dead on except for power... i rely on my serve. power is huge for me.. however the RDX just carves!!! even without the power, you can just blow stuff by opponents with wicked spin, kickers and most importantly .... placement. The RDX does not flow through the air that well, a little sluggish in the aerodynamics dept... but probably the best all around stick period!.... this thing does it all very well, and looks very good to-boot!

Nice review! I love this stick and am now kicking myself for parting ways with it!!!!!!!

(By the way... i may be a bit bigger than Jeff (i'm 6'1" 200lbs), so the serve comment is not a crack against what is posted, i S&V a lot, most of the time i rely on power to catch my opponent off guard and keep them guessing... the RDX is a great "change-up" stick............. geez, i could keep going! Great stick. Period!)

Nice review... top notch, best yet! Nailed it!

jdeloach, this is my #1 racket also. Thanks for the review. It confirms my sentiments. I bought 2 based on TW reviews (didn't even demo) and the fact it was elbow friendly. With the low flex rating and spin production, I can swing away and keep the ball deep. The feel is superb.

Comfort = 10 for me.

Groundstrokes = 9 It just works for my game.

Volleys = 8 I tried the lead at 3&9 but it lost too much in other areas so I removed it. I might start with less and work my way up.

Serves = 8 I lost some mph on first serves but like the spin/kick on 2nd serves.

nice one jdeloach but would you consider the RDX to have a bigger sweet spot than the RDS basing on your experience with the two?
i always though the RDX was a tad better than the RDS and you agreed with that, wow ..
i can see you put the nBlade OS in the list already , keep em coming man :D

Note: why don't you give brief description on your tennis level and style on every review for better understanding ?

Sag, the RDX sweetspot does feel a little bigger than the RDS. I believe that is one of the things I really like about it.

I will add my style of play and some more about me on my Review Thread. Thanks for the suggestion.

Great Review! I now play with the RDX 500 and couldn't be happier. I have been on an ever ending quest for the perfect racquet and so far this is my favorite. In fact I quit demoing and bought a few RDX's. I have recently demoed, C10, DNX 10, DNX 9, mfil 300, ncode nsix 95, and RDS 001..... This one is my favorite.... I really enjoyed the RDS but like the RDX a tad more.

Keep up the reviews, we all love them!

jdeloach,
will the set-up you've done with the RDS001 feel the same or close if you do it with the RDX500MP? just got mine and the racket realy feels good just thinking if i can improve it

Hello jdeloach and thank you very much for your review.
It's very interesting to read all of them, then compare and refine the judgment globally.

Did you tried lead on this racquet ? Did it worked ?

I added 12g to the throat, its was alot more stable and had the added punch it needed for volleys and serves and the stability for returns. Perfect racket, excpetional spin, comfort and feel. But I had problems flattening out the ball and when swinging at maximum strength, control sorta got slightly away.
I changed to the n90 before going back to my Lm radical as the n90 gave me arm pain.

RDX500 MP is an excellent racquet. plenty power. lots of spin. loved that whaDAP sound it made when striking the ball. almost made me switch. excellent.

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up that JD has not been around since June, so I would expect an answer from him on this.

Wonder what happened to him?

I never tried the RDX 500 because almost every post on here said it served marshmellows.. interesting jdeloach thinks differently :-?

I might be posting an MP in 4 3/8 FS or FT next week.

I still can't decide if I want to keep it. I have 2 main sticks that I like and am comitted to. I keep the RDX as a backup.

What I really like about the RDX 500 is that it feels good in my hand. The balance and weight placement are great. Very maneuvarable.

The racquet gives you a lot of confidence on groundstrokes. Fhs and bhs have decent pop, good spin, and good control. The sweet spot is large and forgiving. There is a little less power as you get closer to the upper hoop.

Probably the biggest flaw for me is the serve. But I'm not a big server to start with. If you have good form you can serve well with the RDX.

It's a great racquet for baseliners that can create there own power. It's the racquet I'd be using if i wasn't playing the new Head Radical. Sometimes I'm tempted to switch even though I know I need to stick to one frame.

so how else are you guys customizing your RDX500s?

I have a leather grip I could throw on it, just like the OP.. wouldn't doing just that make it too headlight?

thanks

Found it very spin friendly but I lacked a killer put away shot with it, never got much on the serve either. Never got around to adding lead as I found the Mid a better fit.

The RDX 500 Mid is a weapon though, much heavier groundies and better serve. Plays alot bigger than a 90inch.

The RDX 500 MP is a nice frame, but there is no doubt in my mind the RDX 500 Mid is better (that's why I still have one in my collection).

Is jdeloach still alive??

I hope all is well with him with him and his family; I know that there was a health issue with a child. It was nice having him around the forums.

His profile shows that he still hasn't logged on since last June, but he might visit just not logged in. If you're watching best to you and your family.

I have 3 of each. I have several Mids (POG, RDS001, RDX500 etc. etc.) in my collection. But of late (perhaps a sign of age), I have been loving the RDX500MP over the Mid. Clearly, the Mid is a better weapon with far more destructive force, marginally better serving, way better volleys and kicking topspin groundies (thanx to the 16x18 pattern on the Mid). But I found the MP way more consistent and found much better results with it. My groundies with the MP have depth and spin. My 1st serve percentage has gone way up. I have not lost much on power in my flat bomb with my MP as compared to my Mid (now the RDS001 Mid was lethal on the flat bomb... but that's a whole diff story). With the MP, I can break down my opponent with deep topspin from side to side with near-perfect control, wait for my chance to attack a short ball and then move up to the net to kill a weak response ===> this has been working REAL well with the RDX500 MP.

I have been experimenting quite a bit with grips, strings etc. on both the RDX500 Mids as well as MP's. I have settled into a 4-3/8 gripsize with Prince Cushion Replacement Grip, VS Gut 17 in the mains at 56lbs with leather power pads and Topspin Cyber Flash 17 (1.25) in the crosses at 51lbs with Pete Sampras vibe dampener; which is what all my RDX500's (Mids as well as MP's) are set up with now.

For now, for me, RDX500 MP wins.

P.S. I hope things are well with you and your family, jdeloach. Our prayers are with you.

I also gave up on the mirage of the mid size. Sure, "Clearly, the Mid is a better weapon with far more destructive force", but that's only in theory or when you just rally without scoring, you get a ball that bounces just right and you blast it and you go "gee the mid size rules". In real world, when you play on points, you shank once or twice with the mid and then you start doubting yourself and you hold back and then you're done. The MP is a lot easier to play with, just "grip it and rip it" kind of tennis.

Totally agree. I couldn't have said it better.

I really found it the other way around. I had the mid first and liked it but thought the MP would be better for me as I am not generally a mid user at all, I got the mp and just rallying I thought WOW this is the one, massive spin easy to play with etc etc. Once I started playing points I was just getting pushed around to much with the MP, I had to go for too much to try and finish a point which added up to many errors.
I had much better success in matches with the mid, I might try some lead on the MP and see how that works.

I went backwards; started out with the RDS001 MP and now the RDX500 MP is my main stick. I really wish Yonex would make this exact same stick again.

I couldn't agree more with the review. It is just what I think of the racket, except I would emphasize a little bit more on the spin on the serve. Ever since I've picked this racket up, my kick serve has gone from my weakest stroke to one of my main weapons. Sure, my technique has improved, but I also need to give credit to the feel of the RDX500 MP.

Anyway, I'm buying these rackets, so sell them to me!

I used the rdx500mp. 12g of lead on the inside of the throat works wonders. Loads more stable and no more problems with a weak serve. But with the rdx I had the tendency to hit too much spin. Really heavy ball but I can't crush sitters. I tried to change my strokes a wee bit for 1 year with it but gave up. Too spinny, great racket no doubt. I didn't like the rds it was too stiff.

I just got this racquet and I cant wait to try it out tmr.

I'm still a beginner (3.0) and I want something easy on arm and nice feel... using a PDR now... so I think it should be lovely to me.

HA!

How about RDX 500 HD version?

Anyone have experince playing with the RDX500 HD denser string version? HD mean high density.

Check out the spec and it looks pretty solid. Just want to hear from playa who played with it - likes and dislike.

Peace!

Hey In D Zone... I've tested the RDX 500 MP HD and can share some thoughts...

IMHO the best of the 3 is the Mid version, VERY close second is the HD and the last is the standard MP.

I like the 16x18 pattern in a 90 sq. inch head but in a 98 the 18x20 works much better... no trampoline effect and good control.

The HD definetly had less spin potential but the control was superb! Slices were excellent but heavier topspins were a bit difficult. I honestly thought that the HD had best stability out of the three... I think it could be because the HD is heavier than the MP and has a bigger head (easier to hit the sweetspot) than the Mid. However the Mid traveled through the air better than the HD or MP. I honestly liked the MP version better for clay and the Mid for fast hard courts and indoor game. But the HD was the most versatile IMHO. I got a good margin of error during those long clay rallies yet the 18x20 pattern when playing on hardcourts helped me execute those deadly slices of mine.

Thanks for the input Automatix. I am searching for a heavier version of Ti80 and looks like the RDX 500 HD will fit the bill. I just picked one up today and will be waiting delivery.

BTW - I think the grommets for the RD Pro 70 might be arriving at your place sometime next week (keeping my fingers crossed).

Love the RDX500. I enjoy the feeling when I get it on that sweetspot. Priceless. And a well hit slice BH feels magical!

I have recently switched to RDX 500MP. Initially, felt that the racket was a little too light, but after adding lead to 2 and 10 o'clock (about 5-6 grams in all), the racket felt very good. Serve is strong, and the racket feels very stable and comfortable, especially during heavy exchanges and volley. It is easy to swing, and the ball has good depth and control.

Have decided to switch to this as my main stick.

Well I liked ;) However my personal fav and holy grail is the RD-7... God!!! That thing is a superb stick...

Yeah... that makes two of us ;)

Anyone uses RDX500 mp with Multfi strings? any recommendations?

I play about twice a week and wish it to last for at least 2 months!

I tried Multi-Fil strings and it barely last for 2 weeks.. GOSH..
Now I'm just sticking to cheap Syn strings.

Ever had problems dealing with heavy balls? My racq seems to tweak alot...

I have leaded up at 2 and 10 o'clock, and the total strung weight is about 350g. I have to say that leading up has made the racket more stable, and improved on the pace and depth of the shots, especially the serves. Have no problem of racket tweaking. Very comfortable stick.

I was using hybrid strings with the racket at the start, and recently, I have switched to full poly strings. Full poly at low tension (about 52 lbs) feels very sweet on this racket. Would highly recommend this.

I used to be one who change racket very often, but after using this stick, I am sure that it will remain my main stick for a long time. In fact, I have 3 of them now, all leaded and weighed the same!

gah mine are in the post somewhere should have arrived yesterday! i'm really psyched to hit with them! currently use rds003 got these cheap, playing tomorrow they need to arrive!

Still have one (mp), though I haven't played with it lately.
Amazing feel, plush, very low powered, very spin friendly. Rather unstable off center.
Power and stability can be fixed with extra weight, but it somehow affects feel. I found it to work best @2&10
