Yonex Ultimum RD Ti-80

Has anyone played with the Yonex Ultimum RD Ti-80 mp? Please comment on maneuverability vs. stability, power vs. control, and feel? Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

think of an old school version of the mp tour-1. good stability, decent maneuverability, low power, good control. a good mix of everything, i'de give it a demo

Excellent all around racquet. I agree with MasterOfCatastrophe. If you want to know more, do a search; there's been plenty of posts on it.

long and short of this racquet is that it is supposed to be ideal for serve and volleyers stock, but with modest amount of lead tape, is also good from the backcourt. Some have complained that it is uncomfortable or tinny...but lead tape and soft strings also eliminates much of this. I never owned one, but have been using the very similar Ti-70 Long, which has 18x20 string pattern and extra .5" Most of the comments I've heard on the TI-80 match the Ti70 Long, and with about 6-10 grams of lead tape and natrual gut strings, the tinny-ness is gone, sweetspot much less demanding, and performance on groundstrokes awesome. Supposed to have excellent spin and control. Power is gonna be pretty low.

Thanks everyone for your reply. How does it compare to the rdx 500 mp, particularly from the baseline? How would you rate the feel or feedback on the Ti-80? Thanks again.

ti-80 is gonna have a much crisper, precise feel, while the RDX-500 is gonna have a much softer (some say buttery, I say mushy) feel. TI-80 cuts through the air better and feels more maneuverable; it's got a thinner box beam. The RDX will feel more "solid" stock on groundstrokes, but will feel less potent on serves and volleys. Ti-80 with some lead tape will feel plenty solid though; it just starts out really headlight and thin in the hoop. Personally, I much prefer the TI-80 as I can't get the pop on serves with the RDX that I want, and I tend to prefer a more raw precise feel to a muted, dampened, or vague hit. Also, since the TI-80 starts out so headlight and swings so fast, there's more room for customization with lead tape to find the right swingweight and balance. I'm a big fan of the now discontinued ti-70 long which is a very similar frame except it is 18x20 pattern and 1/2" longer.

For some reason, Yonex Ti rackets just feel more tinny/metalic than other manufacturer's titanium composite frames....maybe they use more of it cause it's cheaper than High Modulus Graphite...

I completely agree. Thanks for your input.

I am currently using the Yonex RDX 500 Mid but I am thinking of getting an RD Ti-80. In Tennis Warehouse you can get a '2005 model' of this racquet. My question is, "is there any difference between the 2005 model and the standard RD Ti-80?"

The 2005 version of the TI-80 has a flashy red paint job. I called Yonex and they told me that the specs are the same as the original and the change is only cosmetic. I have both a new one and an original. My new one does feel like it has a little more weight in the head but it's probably just manufacturing variance. I think the TI-80 is a nice racket.

The TI-80 is my favorite in the Yonex line. It is solid in all phases of the game. The newer version and older version have the exact same specs. I actually prefer the older version cosmetics. Classy and solid, just like the racquet.

Thanks for the replies about the '2005 model'. In the UK here I have not found a single place that sells the new model so I guess I will just settle for the older model with the orangy colour.

i like rdx500 mid better than the lm prestige. before i used the rdx i played with a ti 80. it is a nice all around racket.

Gabs in teh UK? Welcome my fellow countryman! Anyways if your looking for a Ti-80 (old pj) i know a place that sells its for £80 (online), i don't know if you can beat it but just wanted to let you know. and the Ti-80 as they say is a very sweet racket, its been my racket for almost a year now and i'm loving it, its just that sometimes its a lil too underpowered for me (not normally, just like if i'm against the wind)

string and tension for Yonex Ti - 80

Please recommend tension and string for yonex Ti-80 / 2005 model / new version .

thanks

I'm just an average recreational player (about a 4.0) and use a multifilament strung at the upper 50s in my TI-80. This combination is very easy on the arm. I think stronger players would probably go low 60s with a different string.

hi guys,

i used the RD-7, loved it, except its a little too heay for me.

switched to the Ti-70 Long. also a very nice racquet. but string pattern too dense for me, didnt get as much kick and spin that i am used to with the RD-7.
now i am using the Ti-80. i LOVE it!! it does feel like the ti-70 long. except it is more control, spin, and more "crisp" than the 70 long.

but i want to try the RDX500 MID. i have hit with the RDX500 MP before.
didnt like it AT ALL.

so my question is, if i disliked the 500 MP so much, will i even like the 500 MID?

well, what did the MP feel like to you? for me the mid felt very slippery, with little dwell time and very little bite, but bear in mind this was half a year ago when i wasn't as good.

The mid is more compact, swings a little heavier, more solid hit through the ball. Sweatspot is great but it's still a 90" frame, not as powerful as the mp. I just picked up a HD MP, and I think it is the best hitting of the three. Yes, it has less spin but it has the best control, swing weight, and power of the three RDX's for me.

I think the Ti-80 has LESS control than the Ti-70 Long....that is the one advantage of the dense string pattern....it also feels a little crisper (stiffer maybe?) I had considered shortening a TI-70 Long to get a Ti-80 with an 18x20 pattern...which is what Srichapan is using....but I was told by a Yonex rep, that a Ti-70 shortened to standard length would come out stiffer than a Ti-80 stock.

KOtennis, if you don't state what you didn't like about the RDX500 Mid+, how's anyone gonna know if you'd like the Mid?

i've changed from a ti 80 to rdx 500 mid, and i like it. i still found that the ti 80 is lack of control sometimes. but as they said before ti 80 is a very nice frame. don't know about the rdx 500mp, haven't try it yet.

adely,

what did i NOT like about the RDX500 MP?
i pretty much like NOTHING about it.
maybe because i was using the RD-7 right before i tried it.
it felt too light, very unstable (wobble when i hit), swingweight was too low,
the only thing i can do consistantly was my serves and slice backhand.

When I got my RDX Mid, that's the exact same trouble I had. I didn't like it at all in stock form but after I added a bunch of weight(some lead to 4 and 8 o'clock, but mostly to the butt cap) I really liked it. I think mine weighs around 12.7 ounces now and plays splendidly. I don't think you'd need to add as much weight as I have, as people on this board really like it in stock form too.
Anyway, you should try it as people have said that the mid and mid+ play very differently. Cheers
