Yonex VCORE 98 Tour

Anyone else find that this racquet just destroys strings (as well as balls)? I’m not a string breaker but Velocity MLT snapped within an hour and a half. And polys go dead with about 2 hours of play. And these are polys known for their good tension maintenance—confidential and tour m8. Maybe the problem is the extra high swing weight of my particular stick which came in at 304 unstrung coupled with the heavy static weight and very open string pattern. Going up in gauge is a problem as well given the high SW. may need to buy a couple more and hope they come in at a more normal SW. Aside from this one issue I am loving this stick…and my percepts are feeling neglected.

VCT is more open than the Percepts. This is gonna lead to more breakage.
Would definitely experiment with higher gauges

yes, thicker gauge is the answer. Problem is with a 1.25 (Tour M8), I'm already at 336 SW. Mine came in way over spec compared to most on SW.

I don't think strings make a massive difference to swing weight, not much more than adding a dampener. Your body will easily adapt to such a small difference which is more psychological than anything.

my VCT are 337 + 336. but they definitely don't feel that heavy. hopefully my opponent feels it though
the magic of this stick. ignore it and tell yourself it has a swingweight that is 325.

The difference I measured between confidential 1.20 and M8 1.25 is 4 points on SW. Maybe that's an anomaly, but if going up to 1.30 takes me up to 340...that's kind of a big difference from my confidential at 332.

Dear Yonex,

I swear you are reading my posts...
A few years ago i asked for the VCORE TOUR... how it was going to be a great seller... and boom!

Anyways Yonex if you're reading this, we need a new colorway.
It has been a while seeing a non red vcore. Lets make it happen!

There’s gonna be a beige colorway coming this summer. Hopefully it would be mostly black with beige or something along those lines. Looking forward to a new limited paintjob. The last VC got a limited edition color too with it being black, grey and volt where the blue is on the 2021 versions but that one was Japan exclusive.

The new vcores are generally pretty bad, but I just finished my first hit with the tour—strung with ice code 17. Played for an hour in windy conditions so no crazy hitting and it’s completely notched and has no snapback.

I’ll have to try PTF or one of the re strings in the crosses to see if that helps.

Wow, really? I'm a big fan of the VCT, but I must admit that I'm not a big fan of the color, so I really like the possibility of having a new one. Have you seen any information or pictures of this new colorway?

I haven’t seen pictures yet but did ask TW about it and they said they can’t say nothing yet but hang on tight!

I definitely effects swing weight, measurements don’t lie.

Is it too much of a racquet for a 4.0 player? I currently use the Ezone 98 and could use some more topspin. Didn’t care for the regular vcore 98.
If you can get one within a decent spec range then you will be fine. I have 3 of them in the 328-331 swing weight range. I feel like I have more control than I did with the Ezone. I did try to buy a 4th VCT & it had a 338 swing weight. It was like playing with a totally different racquet. Luckily I was able to get the seller to take it back. It has a much more solid feel than the regular VC98.

Agree with KC!'s comments above, I also know many 4.0 level players who love this racquet (although I don't know the specs on most of them).

Side note - this racquet is still proving to be a beast and checks all the boxes, topspin in particular is huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge! I tried a leather grip - as many have suggested - but it wasn't for me. Just didn't like the feel and didn't notice a big difference in maneuverability, and I would likely need to go down a grip size to use leather. Back to playing stock with just overgrip and dampener.

I was fortunate enough to have been shown a few pics of the alternate colorway. IMHO, Yonex was smart NOT to simply drop a ‘18 Galaxy black retread. It would have been seen as being lazy. Overall I really like the looks of it but reserve final judgement until I have one in hand. Pictures can often be misleading. I’m a little disappointed they didn’t go with a gloss finish this time but by and large, I think it came out well! They’re slotted to release this fall and will include the 95. Keep in mind however this is subject to change but that’s what was shared with me.

If you’re good to share, would you say it’s switched in colors compared to the current red? Like for the new paintjob, the red portion would be beige then some black elements or is it a completely new design?

Any information re longbody versions? I was told no dice.

I strung my racket with PT Rev at 50 lbs about 2 months ago. Initially, I felt comfortable with the change, but soon started experiencing discomfort, especially during serves, and the sensation became increasingly rigid/muted over time.

Considering that tension tends to decrease with use, I expected the sensation to become softer.

Recently, I had the opportunity to buy and test a used Vcore 98(standart), thinking that the weight of the setup - VCT + leather grip + PT Rev at 50lbs (around 350g total weight) - might be contributing to the discomfort, but I also didn't adapt and am going back to the VCT.

In Brazil, options for strings are limited, with PT Rev available only in orange 1.25 at a few stores.

Given this limitation, I'm considering switching to PT Spin or Confidential.

What do you suggest?

If you’re feeling discomfort then I wouldn’t go with stiffer strings like Confidential or PTS. I would go with Poly Tour Pro yellow 1.25. I would also restring a poly every 2-3 weeks in the VCT. It’s pretty hard on strings & most polys should be restrung every 15 hours maximum. If you left Poly Tour Rev in for 2 months, that is probably your issue. Polys loose their elasticity & then your arm is punished by dead string.

poly strings will lose their elasticity over time, i.e. go "dead"
you can expect anywhere from a few hours to maybe 15-25 hours. ultimately you may be playing with dead strings 2 months later. (depends how often you play)
some people like dead strings, because no matter how hard they hit it seems to keep the ball in. you can find better options than dead poly imo.

PSA... if you're using poly and having pain issues. i strongly suggest you either restring often, consider moving to a gut hybrid, or stop using poly.

really hoping the tour is included in this alternate color!

@KC! @ichaseballs

Well, I think I'm starting to understand now, and you guys cracked the code.

At first, the PT Rev seemed great and there was no discomfort, but now it feels like I'm hitting with a piece of wood.

There's no elasticity, although the strings still look great and don't have the spacing issues that occur with PT Pro when it loses tension after some time. That's why I thought the problem might be something else.

Once again, the difficulty here is finding strings, as I can only find the Rev in one store.

I've always used polys and never had any pain, even with the current discomfort. The issue arises when I can't hit the sweet spot properly.

Which strings and tensions are you using?"

I would suggest looking into Tecnifibre Triax if you have it available locally or if you can import it.

It's a great string for people who want some of the benefits of poly, but don't want to restring often. You can string it at the tension you would string a soft poly, or a little higher (not as high as a regular multifilament).

It's not going to give you the crazy amounts of spin you'd get from a shaped string, but most people don't need (or even want) that anyway. If you don't break it quickly it's good value for money as well, despite looking expensive, because it plays well for a long time.

Thank you for the suggestion. I looked around, but this string is not available on any website or in any store near me.To make matters worse, the current Brazilian government has imposed absurd taxes on individual imports, making it nearly impossible to buy anything from abroad unless someone brings it back from a trip
