Yonex VCore Pro 97HD
Design 8.5/10
Let me start by saying, I love the color! When you add a leather grip the tan and green just oozes with class. That being said, I would prefer just a solid green without all the futuristic artwork blended in the background. But I am a simple man, and that is probably not the popular opinion. The racquet does look older than a lot of the flashy colors being carried to the courts nowadays, but again...that is ok with me. The quality of the paint is amazing!! Of course that should come as no surprise to anyone when you talk about Yonex racquets.

Overall – Yonex has very high quality racquets, and this is no exception

Groundstrokes 8/10

The 97HD has a great plush feel, which does my 45yr old arm good. The accuracy from both the backhand and forehand side is deadly. That being said, the forehand is where I seemed to struggle just a tad. I believe with the combination of flex, tight string pattern, and just me being out of shape, I struggled to get the ball as deep as some other 18x20 racquets. Now the backhand side was a different tale all together. I LOVE this stick on my backhands. Did not matter if I was slicing or letting her rip....LOVED the feel and precision. I believe all of these latest Vcore Pro racquets were designed with Wawrinka in mind. (even though he doesn't actually play a VCore Pro)

Overall – Really solid overall from both sides. Shines like a diamond on backhand control and feel.

Volleys 9.5/10

Definitely my favorite area with the 97HD. Of course, this is usually my favorite with any 18x20 frame. The feel, stability, and accuracy was amazing. I could literally feel the ball sit on the strings and have lunch before launching exactly where I wanted it to land. It felt solid against heavy balls and made me want to get to the net as soon as possible.

Overall – Incredible in this area. Again....most 18x20's for me are great at the net as long as they are stable and not stiff as boards.

Serves 9/10

This also was a very nice area with this racquet. Usually I am not very good serving with 18x20 racquets. Especially my second serve. The 97HD actually surprised me. Not only did it create accurate flat first serves, but I was able to get pretty good kick on my seconds. The pace on my first was a little lower than racquets like the new PT2.0, but I believe with a couple grams at 12:00...that could change.

Overall – Control was great. Feeling was great. Spin was enough. Pace a little lacking.

Final Thoughts

Another amazing racquet of quality, control, and feel from Yonex. I actually got rid of mine and decided a couple days ago to get another. I want to keep 2 around for sure. If you like plush 18x20 racquets that look classy....definitely give this one a try.

Overall Score – 9.06/10

Its a great racquet. Im on my 4th string job with it and Im really liking it with Klip 1.25 gut 54lbs X Luxilon 4G Soft 49 lbs. This has bumped up the power a bit and its incredibly comfortable.

I may give that a try next. Thanks for the feedback

Interesting how rackets are so personal. I demoed this racket and didn’t like it at all. I then demoed the 16x19 heavier version and loved it. I think the 16x19 version is better in every way. Go figure.

Agreed. The HD felt good but my hitting partners said the ball I hit was “meh”. The vcp97 310 hit a much better ball according to my hitting partners.

This.

How you feel the racquet is one thing, what it does on the other side of the net is an entirely different matter. For example - I may not be fond of how my Angell TC100s feel but they definitely produce the meanest rally ball of all my frames and it has another gear for winners on top of that. A quality that’s hard to beat.

I am wanting to try a 16x19 in comparison for sure
I have a Vcore 98+ on the way, so anxious to give it a hit

I got to demo the VCORE 98+ and it is a fantastic racket. I was serving so well with it. Damn near felt like I was cheating. I just don’t know if I could commit to a plus length due to my 1HBH and because I love to volley. Usually extended rackets after a while bug my elbow due to my 1 hander. I liked the 98+ better overall than the standard length 98. If I wasn’t so used to my Volkl I probably would’ve bought a 98+ just to see if I could Make it work due to serves and forehands alone! Look forward to your thoughts.

I just played a set on clay with my HD and lost 7-5 but it was probably the best Ive ever played with it. My problem is I keep switching between weighted up Duel G 310 16x20 / HD 18x20 / Vcore Pro 330 so I never get completely comfortable with one because they are all great racquets that have attributes I like. Ugh

HD has incredible accuracy that gives me the confidence to hit balls into the corner while the Vcore Pro 330 has better stability and plow. Ive been resisting trying to mod the HD but I think I might try putting a little weight in the throat or some at 12 and counterbalancing under the cap because I think the balance is perfect.

I play with a 1HBH as well, so that is my only concern.

Here's a fun tip if you want to test out weight on your racquet at different locations. I love the TW tungsten tape but when you pull it off, the adhesive is toast. So I got some double sided tape and now I can apply and re-apply it on multiple racquets before deciding where I want to make a more permanent application with brand new tape. The only difference is the repurposed tungsten is slightly heavier with this double sided tape (.75g is now .9 or .95). Very handy.

I use to have different weights of TW tape precut and apply them to demo racquets with packing or painters tape in various locations with adhesive backing still on. Easy to see how racquets would perform if I wanted to mod them and was easy and non destructive to demos. Could use same technique for re-applying used tape instead of throwing it away I'd think.
