You-Gov Poll - The most boring sport to watch

The fact that there have been regular season games in London since 2007, with a 90,000 seater stadium selling out incredibly quickly often in under an hour, has definitely helped the sport popularity. Another important factor has been that the TV coverage has increased with numerous matches on free to air TV channels as well as subscription ones. And the sport has been increasingly popularity for UK gamblers to place bets on. Plus away from the glitz and glamour of the NFL, there have been a rising number of amateur american football teams in the UK as well.

In the US, does the fact that the season is so short (just 5 months) compared to the MLB, NBA and NHL ones help it's popularity? Often less is more, and there is a much longer period to miss the sport and crave it's return during the off-season.

In the NFL every match matters, with teams playing a 16 game regular season and a maximum of 19 to win the Superbowl. And there is a healthy amount of parity and teams that can compete for the superbowl.

But in the MLB, NBA and NHL the seasons can drag on and on with so many useless regular season games when the players are going through the motions and trying to save energy for the playoffs. The NBA is incredibly predictable with a terrible lack of parity, and for many younger people I guess that baseball games are too long, slow and low-octane.
You’ve hit the nail on the head there. Fewer matches makes each one more important to the season. However the NFL has tried to stretch out the season as well as add more days that matches are played (used to be just Sunday with one on Monday. Now there is a Thursday nite game and Saturday games occasionally too.)

I don’t care for basketball one iota but the league seems to be doing just fine. NHL has a group of hardcore fans that will always watch but it is definitely a niche sport in the US. MLBs issue is just too many games and the games are too long.

People have been saying this for sometime but the sport of the future here really is soccer. As youth participation in baseball and football have dropped soccer playing is very popular and MLS has done a good job of keeping their costs down while they grow revenue. It’s not even remotely as big as EPL or Champions League but it is growing. I teach middle school and on any given day I can look out in my class and see kids wearing Man Utd, New England Revolution, Chelsea or Barcelona shirts.

Alas tennis is also a niche sport.

What garbage. Football is by far and away the most popular sport in Great Britain, nothing else comes close. Something not right about this poll. Swimming should be close to the top.
I think this was a poll of the general public which would include housewives who probably only watch the olympics. Because yeah swimming is boring as f.

Yeah I've read a lot about impressive participation (both for kids and adults) and TV ratings stats for the sport in the US. For example the Copa America Centenario event in the summer of 2016 was a huge success. I remember ESPN paying a lot of money to televise the 2012 European Championships.

The MLS is very well attended, people care a lot about the progress of the US men's and women's national teams, and most of the major European and Mexican teams have large fanbases and can attract strong TV ratings there.

It's generally cheaper and more accessible than most other sports with would help as well.

I guess the main area for improvement is the MLS TV ratings (generally Mexican league matches attract higher ratings in the US), but I'm sure that will come with time.

True the tv ratings for MLS suck. But as a live product it can’t be beat. I bought 2 tix for 6 matches in 2018 to the Revolution for $200. That’s like $15 a ticket. You can’t even go to a movie for that. And there were 40k people at the last game of the season for a team that didn’t even make the playoffs!

Agreed. While of course not in the US, I've been to a Toronto FC game and enjoyed it a lot.

That was during their earlier years when they were famous for having one of the most passionate fanbases and best atmospheres in the MLS (they were probably no. 1 there before the Seattle Sounders came along), and being incredibly well run financially, but ultimately producing terrible results on the pitch. That seemed to be typical of most or all teams from Toronto across different sports. So I'm delighted that they've become strong contenders in the league over the past few years and won the MLS cup last year.
