As the title says, what is everyone's favourite matches ( 1 per slam ), and when did it occur etc?

Even posting some videos would be cool.

2017 AO-Federer vs Nadal
2011 RG- Federer vs Djokovic
2007 Wimbledon- Federer vs Nadal
2011 USO- Federer vs Djokovic (one of the worst chokes in Fed’s career but a great match)

Sorry for the lack of variety (lol) but all of my favorite matches feature Fedr.

It was a very good match. Roddick summoned his GOAT tiebreak self.

Unfortunately it deserted him in his very next match :(

Roddick choked in the final especially in the second set.I remember it was 6-2 in the tiebreak for him and he lost the set.He was close to win this final, felt sad for him which is rare about Federer opponents

That second set was a huge choke. But he wasn't the only one who choked tiebreaks to Fedr. Even Djoker and Rafa choked tiebreaks to Fedr on occasions.

Roddick was just not good at winning tiebreaks vs Fedr. I believe he just 2 tiebreaks vs Roger in his entire career. None of them at slams.

AO 17 final. Most satisfying in terms of Fed winning a slam after 6 months out injured, first slam in 4 and half years and beating Rafa after not beating him since W ‘2007.

FO 2009 final - Fed’s most complete performance in a Slam final considering the pressure he was under to finally complete his career slam. Period.

Wimbledon - Semi final 2003. Really enjoyed a young Fed beating young Roddick. All that promise from beating Sampras finally realised and with so much more to come. Better performance than the final v Philipoussis.

US Open 2004 v Hewitt. Demolition job. Never seen Fed’s forehand in such crushing form.

sheer offensive perfection

I was in a hotel room in Vegas staring at the TV in disbelief at what I was seeing

I'd never seen a top player get destroyed in a slam final in such away . I mean sure Hewott and Safin thrashed Pete but he was old and they were peaking young guns

But two young guys both in their prime and of an age together ?? It was mesmerizing

My Own List

French Open: Steffi Graf d Martina Hingis (F, 1999. Graf's last ever match against Hingis, and one of the most dramatic and bizarre finals ever)
US Open: Serena Williams d Azarenka (F, 2012. A modern classic)
Australian Open: Kerber d Williams (F, 2016. An epic match in terms of quality, and a turning point for Kerber's career)
Wimbledon: Jana Novotná d Venus Williams (QF, 1998. 2 of my favourite ever players going head to head. And it was INCREDIBLE match)

French Open: Lendl d Mcenroe (F, 1984. Lendl overthrows Mcenroe in one of the greatest comebacks ever. Mcenroe would go on to have a legendary 1984 season, long declared the best ever, making Lendl's efforts seem even greater in later reflection. It was Lendl's first victory at a major and opened the floodgates to an extraordinary career)
US Open: Pete Sampras d Andre Agassi (QF, 2001 - Quite simply, as good as it gets. Fastcourt tennis played on a knife's edge with a classic clash of styles and the two icons of superstar US tennis)
Australian Open: Marat Safin d Roger Federer (SF, 2005. Safin's masterpiece. The enigmatic Russian's rejoinder lest anyone ever question his greatness. Federer was on the cusp of the most dominant period of his career but was simply no match for Safin on the day, who was godly).
Wimbledon: Rafael Nadal d Roger Federer (F, 2008. Declared by many the greatest match ever. Federer's backhand passing shot to save match point is one of many moments that will echo for generations. The scene of Nadal collapsing in near darkness, having overthrown Federer in his own domain, is one of the most iconic grasscourt images of all time.

Why RG F 2008?

You’ve mentioned some classic matches, but RG 08!!! Really?

Schwartzman would have given Nadal a better run for his money in that match.

Australian Open:
No contest really here for greatest match. Redefined the nature of the sport of tennis itself. Greatest Match Ever Played by a mile and a half.
Honorable mentions: 2017 final, 2013 Fed v Murray and Djokovic v Wawrinka, 2005 SF, 09 SF
Roland Garros:
Full of twists and turns, impeccable shotmaking, and the trademark Herculean rallies. Gladiator fight for the ages.
Honorable mentions: 09 Fed vs Haas, 2010 Djokovic vs Melzer (painful to rewatch but still great match), 2016 final, 2015 Nadal vs Djokovic (for obvious reasons).
Wimbledon:
Again pretty obvious. Most dramatic match possibly ever. Huge changing of the guard moment for tennis.
Honorable mentions: 2014 final, 2009 final, 2013 Murray vs Verdasco, 2017 Nadal vs Muller, 2001 final
US Open:
Might be the most important tennis match ever. Had a few lapses in quality in the 1st and 2nd sets, but the last few games saw the highest level of play any tennis player has ever achieved. Djokovic awakens his dragon to free the sport from the stranglehold of Roger Federer, and thus began a new golden era of tennis.
Honorable Mentions: 2013 SF, 2012 final, 2011 SF, 2005 Agassi vs Blake,

Probably 3 of the 4 id choose myself in there.
W 08 is a must I think for the sheer drama ( of course im excluding matches from years before, as I didn't see much from before the Sampras era ).
RG id probably choose between that Nadal v Djokovic match, or the Federer v Djokovic semi.
AO has got to be Nadal v Djokovic also. Not everyones cup of tea, in terms of the baseline rallies, and the time between points LOL but Im all for 5 hour matches !
USO is where im kind of struggling. Never got to watch a lot of matches from the open from where I live, up until maybe 10 years ago.
I guess the Murray Djokovic final was special, as he won his furst major in 2012. Me being a Scotsman myself it was unreal. Not the greatest match im sure, but its all about personal favourites I guess!
Was hoping more people would've posted up matches from the McEnroe Connors days. I guess most people on here are younger than that! :p

Was hoping more people would've posted up matches from the McEnroe Connors days.

Trouble is, footage from those matches just captures nothing of what it was like. To anyone watching who's grown up with Nadal and Federer the game looks like something you hardly recognise. I watched Borg/McEnroe 1980 Final on a little black-and-white telly and the tie-break is still one of the greatest things I've ever seen - the tension just ratcheted in a way you can't describe.

The 2013 Wimbledon SF between Djokovic and Del Potro seems very underrated here. That match, along with the 2012 Olympics semis with Federer, made me believe that Del Potro could be a Wimbledon champion. Too bad he got injured again after.

It was a biased choice - better for my heart than some of the closer matches.

There isn't really a way to describe a match that is great because of the quality of tennis played by just one participant - 1984 Wimbledon McEnroe/Connors is another example. "Great demolition job" sounds a bit cruel!

AO - ? Maybe 1988 Wilander - Cash
Wimbledon - 1980 - Borg - McEnroe, 1987 - Cash - Lendl
RG - 1984 - Lendl - McEnroe
US Open - 1988 - Wilander - Lendl
