I missed many.

However, if you like Tokyo Story you should check Make Way For Tomorrow which TS was based on.

(p.s. i started watching movies about a year back, so i am very ignorant in this area. There were some poasters in the Movies thread ... @Elite was one, who are very much into movies and gave very interesting reviews).

Shutter Island, personally I like it, but I here A LOT of mixed reviews about that movie... the twist at the end I did see coming from a mile away though so....

There are lots of great Russian films. I think you recommended this one to me, along with several others. Cranes are flying, The Fireman's Ball etc. There's one about a museum you recommended which I must get around to seeing.

You are referring to Russian Ark, which doesn't have a traditional narrative. You have to approach it differently than you would most films. Incidentally, The Firemen's Ball is a subversively dissident Czechoslovakian film by Milos Forman. Its entertainment value isn't so great without the historical context.

"Blade Runner" is a great film that still plays well today. My first time in Beijing, I got a ride from the airport from a friend who worked at an embassy. While driving to the city, he gestured to the thick haze and said, "Welcome to 'Blade Runner' and your soon endless coughs."

I think the director deliberately made it ambiguous. The fact that we cannot tell whether the movie's hero is human or a replicant is an indication that maybe replicants should be treated as humans after all.

Have yet to see La Dolce Vita (i've got it), loved the others.

The sci-fi one .. waiting for it to be released on DVD.
 
Then there are the comedies. I have a lot of favourite light-hearted movies that I can watch over and over but it's hard to compare them to more serious films. Stuff like:
The Big Lebowski [1998]
Dazed And Confused (1993)
American Graffiti (1973)
The Breakfast Club (1985)
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
500 Days Of Summer (2009)
The Blues Brothers (1980)

Darn, I have two of 'em but haven't got around to seeing them.
Did not know about Animal House, but will download it as soon as the fourth season of PB finishes download. Your other comedy suggestions were really good: Victor Victoria, Intolerable Cruelty ... can't remember the others offhand.

The movie version of "MASH" is quite a bit racier than the TV series, which (IMHO) did grave injustice to Altman's classic. IOW, not PG so watch away from the folks!

It might be down to my age,but generally,I prefer the more modern brand of comedy,in both movies and tv shows. I find a lot of the older ones too corny and dated. Airplane! in particular,I found just a terrible movie,all the jokes fell flat
 
The funniest (dumbest) part would be, to just licked the pole believing the tongue couldn't possibly get stuck!:(

Maybe tastes change or evolve. Movies I liked or found funny/exciting as a kid, I find slow and boring today.

One old movie i found funny was Arsenic and Old Lace. I somehow love that "dead body humor" whatever the name is for it. Black humor? Morgue humor ? It surfaced a bit in BB, too when Skylar lands up at J's place.
