How do you guys enjoy the highlights of an epic match which your favourite player won, but unfortunately failed to win the tournament?
I personally, am unable to enjoy the highlights from Youtube of Rafa's wins against Berdych and Federer (2012 AO), Federer (2014 AO), Dimitrov (2017 AO), Delpo (2018 Wimbledon), Thiem (2018 USO), 3rd set of 2011 USO final which Rafa won and is regarded by TTW as the best set of tennis ever played, Murray (2010 WTF SF).
While watching these amazing highlights, the mind always jumps forward to the fact that "but he didn't win the tournament, no?". And ultimately, I end up not enjoying that highlight or just switch to another video.
Does this happen to you guys too?

#Jzus, no.

Epic is epic. Shawn Michaels has a losing record at Wrestlemania, but he's STILL Mr. Wrestlemania :D

Yes. When a player I really want to win is defeated, I don't want to see that match again. When I am busy, I record matches I don't have time to see, and I'll enjoy the suspense after work if I have a good day. But for a bad day I'll check the score, and if the person I want to win loses before the final, I don't want to see it.

I was planning to see De Minaur, but when I saw the score, how he narrowly lost the 3rd TB, I just skipped it. I wanted him to make the final.

Yes. But i m talking about a slightly different scenario. Let's say your favourite won an epic semifinal match but then loses the final thus failing to win the tournament. Will you still enjoy watching that epic semifinal (which he had won) at a later date?

No, because it seems empty, pointless.

I can watch and enjoy highlights of Djokovic beating DelPo at Wim 2013 or Murray at RG 15 knowing he would lose each final. It's the losses in epic matches that bother me more.

Right now, the only sports highlights I can't bear to watch is from the conference finals this year between the Rockets and Warriors in the NBA.

Quite simply, tennis is a game where only 2 people are playing and 1 has to lose. If I couldn't accept that, I wouldn't watch.

Or even more precisely, tennis is a game that 128 (or any number of tournament participants) people are playing and 127 of them have to lose. Still a pitty when your favourite lose, however if you like tennis, than just as you said, you'll have to accept it.

Djokovic has quite less no. of epic losses to be honest. You are lucky in that aspect.
Rafa and Fed have plenty of them. Those are traumatic. As i said, the epic losses not only make that particular match tough to watch, it also makes the highlights from that entire tournament tough to watch.

You must not be over 30 lol

Well, kind of. It is not that I don't enjoy watching it, it is that in my mind there still the thought of that great match somehow being in vain. I still like the highlights, however probably not as much as I would like them if my favourite player won.
Prime examples for me would be 2006 Rome (boy, that was tennis... If any player got the ball in position that was nearing neutral to his forehand, that basically ment the end of the point. I am still sad when I watch those missed forehands on MPs) for lost match or 2015 Wimbledon (that semi... I am still sad/wonder why he could not play the same way he did in semi also in final, when I watch it) for tournament,.

Judging by the way Federer fans generally love FO 11 semi I guess it depends on the circumstances. Personally I love the match - and I think it was very significant. It convinced Federer that on his day he was still capable of beating the best in the world. And I like that the last match between Rafa and Fed at the FO was not the 08 Final - Fed may not have won but he was not embarrassed in the 11 Final.

As a Djokovic fan for the most part - RG 2015 vs Nadal (for dead obvious reasons!), but also AO 2014, since i routed for Nadal back then in AO final to complete double career slam and also to avenge Novak's loss in quarters!

Avenge Novak's loss in the quarters?

If anything, Nadal was the most happiest that Novak went out. He wasn't avenging anything.

That is a moral win 'round these parts. But really, we've seen some of the best matches of GS played in quarters and semis, only to have the final be crap. Between Fed and Nadal, there have seen too many to count.

Anyone, who takes phrase - "avenging loss" too literal deserves to be put on tennis wall of shame...Besides the way Wawrinka played in the final, Nadal wishes he had Djokovic instead as his opponent...

Still can’t helieve how Fed didn’t win one of 2011 RG/USO. His ball striking was so crisp. Even Wimbledon if he overcomes Tsonga.

Losing against Djokovic while having 2 MPs on your own serve at US Open, losing against Tsonga from 2-0 set lead.Losing the first set against Nadal in RG 2011 from 5-2 up.So overall Federer played well in 2011 but when it mostly mattered he just couldnt deliver it.It is shame because I believe if he had won US Open 2011 SF he had very good chances in the final.

@Hitman now that you are in this thread, what do you have to say on this?

When I look back at a matches, I look back at them in a much more isolated manner. The tennis match itself is an event on its own...Very often I have gone back and seen some epics that Djokovic won, but even epic matches that he lost. For instance, I have watched Madrid 09 semi a couple of times, the RG 2013 semi, the RG 2011 semi just to name a few.

For me, I have to be a tennis fan first, I need to enjoy the journey, and the emotions that journey creates in me, without having to worry about the end result, or what was going to happen in the match that followed. I have seen the Djokovic v Del Potro W 2013 classic a few times, knowing full well he loses the very next match in straights.

I don't go back and watch matches straight after the event has happened. I let it all settle down, and then go back and appreciate them for the spectacle they are, regardless of who wins or loses, because if it was only about that, I wouldn't watch, I would just read the results and move on.

That's the spirit.

I don't watch highlights from matches that broke my heart, or pour salt in my wounds or spend evenings listening to recordings of nails down a blackboard.

Keep in mind, I have been a competitive athlete myself, so I understand that journey very well from one athlete to another. A lot of it has to do with my own mind set, and how I approached my own battles in the past.
Which sport did you do?

Which sport did you do?

I did a lot of competitive bodybuilding and strength competitions. I travelled the world during my competitive bodybuilding days, and even stepped on stage at the Olympia twice in the Muscle and Fitness Model category. I competed in four natural world body building shows, came second in the US nationals back in 09 for my division, retired from competitive sport with my final show in 2016 in Buenos Aires.

Wow

I'd watch the full match once to understand what's happened, but not the highlights, that's meant to be nice to see so only makes sense when the one I rooted for didn't lose.

Rafter 2000 & 2001 vs Agassi in Wiimbledon
El Aynaoui - 2003 vs Hewitt in Australian Open
Karlovic - 2015 vs Djokovic in Doha
Federer - 2011 vs Djokovic in Roland Garros
Cilic - 2018 vs Nadal in Australian Open
Ljubicic - 2005 vs Roddick in Pariz
Blake - 2008 vs Federer in Olympics
Sampras - 1996 vs Bruguera in Roland Garros
Soderling - obvious choice

Maybe a little bit, certainly in the immediate aftermath of them, but not in the long run, no. Great tennis is great tennis, and as a fan of the sport looking back on amazing matches offers a lot more to me than a title sitting on someones shelf.

Hitman, great athlete career! Is it too much to give us hint how to google you. Probably is too much. Anyway, I love your contribution here, so I feel like I know you, and would like to know more..

I felt bad for Bartoli when she beat "the greatest and most gracious champion who ever lived or will ever live" in the 4th round of W. 2011, only to lose to Lisicki in the quarters.

If you think about Nadal's style choice you just summed up Nadsy's whole career.

It is also known as "pyrrhic" victory.

8-)
