Your favourite set?

Disagree about preferring it to A0 12 5th but I do tend to prefer tactical, defensive play more than most.

However, I agree that the rallies in the whole 11 final and particularly the 4th set were incredible. It gets lost because the overall result was not close. But, probably the most breathtaking rallies off the ground I've ever seen, when you consider both movement and ball striking.

Easier to have great rallies when both guys are serving poorly ;)

5th set last year in the final is tops obviously, but that really is too simple so I'll pick another.

Maybe RG 2011 SF 4th set off the top of my head. In between all the slam wins I really loved that it was Federer playing a brilliant match that ended Djokovic's undefeated streak.

Okay. What was just absolutely your favourite set of tennis ever?

Note - not necessarily the best. Just your favourite.

Bonus points for it being a bit more obscure (i.e. not that TB set from the Wimbledon 08 final :D ). But whatever you like.

Post away. :)
US Open 10 5th set.
AO13 Federer vs Murray 4th set (pretty obscure but awesome set nonetheless)
AO13 Djokovic vs Wawrinka 5th set
USO11 3rd set
RG13 5th set

I honestly thought going into that final that Fed could beat Rafa.
How naive of me.

Maybe if he had taken the first set and not blown it, (still a big maybe) but if I'm honest I knew as soon as Federer beat Djokovic that you could hand Nadal the title. I didn't care though. Even after Federer lost the final I was too happy that he beat Djokovic to care much.

The 4th set of the 1980 Wimbledon Final, the 3rd set of the 2011 and particularly 2013 USO finals, and the 5th set of the 2017 Oz finals are the first that come immediately to mind.

Meh. If rafa was less tired maybe :p

rafa was tired* in that AO 17 5th set ?

then federer was tired in all those 23 losses vs Nadal - including wim 08, AO 09, rome 06 etc.

* I mean you seem to have some other weird meaning for the word tired ...i.e. something equivalent to losing

I wouldn't trade that victory for nothing :p

It was a big middle finger to everyone who was already talking about Nadal-Djokovic in the final and forgot about Federer.

Federer-Djokovic Wimb 2015 second set.

Federer vs Nalbanian WTF 2005 5th set.

Federer vs Berdych Toronto 2010 3rd set. Houdini stuff from Fed :o His entire run to the final in a nutshell.

I would've liked to see that final at that time honestly, but I couldn't cheer against Federer. It just didn't feel right. It's simply not in my DNA.

Obviously. What true fan would root for the opposition?

But I'm sure a lot of guys became Fed fans in that semifinal, if you know what I mean :p

Murray vs Djokovic 5th set AO 2012
Tisparevic vs Ferrer 5th set USO 2013
Djokovic vs Federer 4th set Wimbledon 2014
Dimitrov vs Murray 2nd set AO 2015
Nadal vs Pouille 5th set USO 2016
Cillic vs Muller 2nd Set W2017

Looking back, my favorites are:

4th set, 1981 Wimby Championship- What a present surprise. The great Borg has finally been taken down
5th set, 1980 USO championship- Could Mac be for real?
4th set, 1981 USO championship- Good bye, Borg. Mac is now the King Pin.
3rd set, 1984 USO championship- Mac crushed his nemesis. This felt great
5th set 2017 AO championship- This is the most unexpected result of them all.

Of course, I've had far more heartbreak sets being a McEnroe and Federer fan.

Here are my worst sets:

They include:
4th set, 1984 FO final- Mac was serving up 4-2. This year to me was still the greatest ever. My heart sank when Lendl pushed this to 5
5th set, 1984 FO final- worst loss I've ever witnessed, given that I was a teenager that had tons of time to follow my favorite players. These losses hurt far more then
5th set, 1980 Wimby final- Mac couldn't quite take down the mighty Borg.
3rd set, 1985 USO final- My American hero got blown out by his #1 nemesis, Ivan Lendl
5th set, 2009 AO final- I thought that this officially ended Fed's dominance.
5th set, 2008 Wimby final- Fed's Wimby streak is over
5th set, 2009 USO final- I figured that Fed might not win another slam after this.
5th set, 2014 Wimby final-I felt that this was Fed's last chance for a slam
5th set, year-end championship final vs Nadalbandian. Had Federer won this match, he gets the title and also ties Mac's record of 82-3.
5th set, 2005 AO semi- Safin was incredible in this match. Fed was great, but not great enough
5th set, 2016 Wimby semi- This was Fed's best chance to win a slam. But his knee buckled and he was doomed afterwards
5th set, 2013 AO semi-- I figured Federer was finished when lowly Andy Murray could now beat Federer in a slam.
