Your ideal 8-man Masters Cup field for 2009

This years Masters Cup was hurt with Nadal pulling out and then Roddick withdrawing. It reminded me of the 2005 Masters Cup when you had Federer, Nadal, Hewitt, Safin, Agassi and Roddick, only for the last 5 to withdraw leaving an injured Federer. The 05' Masters Cup would of been the most star studded one if all players had been healthy.

With so much emphasis being placed on the 09' Masters Cup (World Tour finals), who would be your ideal 8 man field.

Mine would be (in no particular order)

Federer
Nadal
Djokovic
Murray
Roddick
Hewitt
Safin
Nalbandian

The top 5 speak for themselves, Hewitt I have always been a fan of, two grand slams, 2 masters cups, davis cup and world number 1 speaks for itself.

Safin is sort of in the same bracket as Hewitt, if he could play at the level that he displayed at the 05' Aussie Open (best slam ever) or even this years Wimbledon, 09' could be awesome for him.

Nalbandian, can take Federer and Nadal on his day, former Masters Cup champions, loves the end of season and a joy to watch at times.

I feel that if these 8 played to their best form, then they would be 8 worthy contenders.

Perhaps with Hewitt and safin I am living in the past, but who knows......

Thoughts.

I'd put:

1) Federer - Awesome shotmaker
2) Nadal - Incredible athletism
3) Nalbandian - Textbook groundstrokes
4) Blake - Monster forehand
5) Roddick - Monster serve
6) Murray - Entertaining game
7) Tsonga - ALSO entertaining to watch
8) Ferrer - Dogged retriever.

All are good matchups for each other.

Here's who I'd personally like to see(now who I think will make it)next year at TMC,in no order:

Fed
Nadal
Nalbandian
Tsonga
Djokovic
Kolja
Safin
Gasquet

Alternatives-Hewitt,Ancic,Blake and Bagdathis

Perhaps with Hewitt and safin I am living in the past, but who knows.......

I think you are,the chances of Safin and Hewitt qualifying the Masters Cup in 2009 are very small but nonetheless I would also like to see those veterans make a comeback in 2009.Last time they played TMC was back in 2004,Fed-Safin semis that year was a great match, some high-quality tennis from both sides and one of the longest tiebreakers ever in the second set.

that field would provide a lot of fist pumping, c'mons, heat, evil eyes, staring the opponent down, and so on. why's federer in the list? I just like his game...

Too bad the 2005 Masters Cup didn't go through as planned. On the bright side (for me) Nalbandian got a chance to play.

My preference for next year (not in order):

Federer
Nadal
Murray
Djokovic
Nalbandian
Davydenko
Tsonga
Roddick

All-rounder

Legend
Federer
Nadal
Djokovic
Tsonga
Nalbandian
Safin
Murray
Hewitt

This would be a great field when all players are in form

I would actually like to see the same field as this year except with Nadal in and Roddick not:

Federer
Nadal
Djokovic
Murray
Simon
Tsonga
Davydenko
Del Potro

ROTFL at Canas, Puerta, and Ljubicic as exciting players. Ljubicic is the worst top 3 player in mens tennis history, and was so anonymous that he wasnt allowed past a gaurd when he didnt have his player ID one time as he wasnt recognized, while he was ranked #3 in the world. Canas and Puerta are a couple 30 something, grunting, snorting, drug cheating, moonballing pushers. Federer is far from my favorite but wanting those three clowns in the Masters Cup and not Federer is crazy.

the current best and the up and coming, but replace baghdatis with tsonga and then it is even better.

I know, maybe I could do that, but I really like Baghdatis, his personality and his game. He has so much talent and I hope he comes back next year.

Only Canas is a "pusher." Puerta could give Nadal a run for his money on clay; he has an incredibly heavy forehand and moves fairly well.

Neither Canas or Puerta were cheaters. I think we already went over this with GameSampras. Although I do agree, neither of them should be in the Masters Cup.

8 is a huge toss up it is probably going to be Roddick just because he is always there, but I would like to see Simon again he played a really strong end of year, but I really think I want see Monfolis finally make it to the top. I really like the way Gael Monfolis plays, he has great reach and speed.

If they're all playing at peak form.....

Nadal
Federer
Djokovic
Murray
Safin
Tsonga
Roddick
Hewitt/Haas

But Safin's too inconsistent, Roddick has too many holes in his game, Haas' body won't (never did) hold up, and Hewitt now after hip surgery I don't think he'll ever play at high level again. So a lot of my list is wishful thinking.

Ferrer? He won't get back to the Master's unless someone gets injured. He should be replaced by Djokovic.

Beauty means nothing if he can't win with it. He does have better strokes, but he's showing preliminary signs of aging.

As for me:

Nadal
Djokovic
Fed
Murray
Roddick
Del Potro

and the last 2 is a big toss up.

*Djokovic couldn't make it because he had a sore throat, or breathing problems, or he couldn't find his favorite cotton panties. I don't know, anyway he couldn't play.

That website is hilarious. I wonder if the majority of the people on that site hate him because he's about to break a certain record or if they hate him because he just keeps beating their favourite players.

I don't know either, but I suspect that either gj011 or Nadal_Freak run it...

Actually, I think it's because some of his fans talk about Federer like he's the second-coming...like a backlash of some sort. I mean, the guy is a hell of a player and one of my favorites to watch, but he's just a tennis player. Same deal with Nadal...err, minus him being one of my favorites to watch.

As to the topic at hand: whoever makes it there next year.
