You're missing the Iga Show...........

If she is a great player, then more power to her. Wta needs uber consistent atg players badly. Apart from Serena and Sharapova, there haven't been any in 2020s.

I don't follow WTA at all. But everyone says she is drama free. Woke politics free. So I will definitely be more aligned to her.

What Iga Swiatek can do is keep winning tonnes of slams and other titles and her base will grow.

WTA could benefit from a few more players who can be expected to be in the quarters, simis and finals..
Need more than aprox 1.5 players in the mix that you can count on in making the finals..

Why is BLM crap? I am not even black but i fully supported that movement. It's a whole other thing that the movement stopped after a fuss of a few months which was very sad to see
I like to leave politics off this forum, but since we're here: I have observed that a lot of posters here are very right-wing and have bought into the whole "anti-woke" stuff. Most, even the US politicians who run on anti-woke and the like, can't define it. It's simply promoting culture wars that they think they can exploit.

Now, where should the lines be drawn in sports when it comes to using one's platform for advocacy? That could be an interesting topic if handled respectfully.

I think sports need to do away with advocacy now. No one is going to change their beliefs. And it turns you off when you hear anyone with opposite political identity now.

Time has come to stop with political advocacy. When players are selling out to play in Saudi Arabia they can't tell people what to do.

Why is BLM crap?
Its the creme-of-the-crap (even black people say its crap, all polytical, and never about black lives. But we digress.....)

Still cant figure out why WTA struggles so much, when it is quite a good show, maybe one of the most attractive female sports there are to watch. I think all of the "equality, same prizes, same work" rethoric has hurt them more than anything else, turns people off. It definitely turns me off when, after a great final like Madrid, an interviewer comes and asks Iga something like "See? Womens tennis is very exciting isnt it?".
They dont need that, no need to PUSH it on people. Its different than ATP, just let the girls do their thing no one is watching bc they wanna support womens tennis, its the same in any sport. If its attractive (in many ways) people will watch. Maybe it is just not as attractive as mens tennis, so maybe the best thing they can do is realize that already and focus on what they got, who they are right now: theres Iga, Aryna, and Elena ( throw in some outsiders who arr menaces from time to time like 'Penko,), these are good times for WTA in my opinion.

Sadly, sport stars are used by some one else. These stars are young men and women who do not live in the real world anymore, they live in a bubble and are ill advised, bombarded by social media and algorithms, and of course the people behind the rethorics love it.
Saudi Arabia is a clear example that these young girls are really not in tune w the real issues.
I never heard of Peng Shuai again...... remember her???? And theyre gonna go play China again arent they?
Money talks.... dont take polytical advice/critique from pro athletes.

BUT I DIGRESS!!!

True.

NBA made deals in china and can't comment on anything Chinese govt does in usa. NBA is 100% American league.

As world is getting multi polar, I think it's best when sports players are not taking any position on anything. Especially in public life. No one would like preaching from others in today's day.

I never expected for something like this to happen but, last Thursday early morning, tuned on some Rome action expecting to catch the Iga-Coco match from the get-go, just to see how Hurkacz, playing before them, won the 2nd set of his match, only to tumble on the third, thus extending the waiting time for Iga. And I found myself a bit irritated that I would have to wait for an ATP match to finish, so the WTA girls could get it on!

Been following Iga since she basically made the switch to Tecnifibre (Im a Tec fan) and am just in awe of her progress, and how well shes playing, how comfortable shes looking on clay, and let alone that, how DOMINANT she is becoming. After a thrilling 3 setter, 3 hour match final in Madrid (her first title at the high-altitude clay tournament in Spains capital) against the number 2 player in the world, Sabalenka, she goes through Rome not loosing a set and playing even better tennis. That forehand of hers, that MODERN, unusual (for the WTA) forehand is flying, kicking up the court thanks to the spin she is able to put on the ball, and ripping through her rivals. This and her better-than-ever 2hbh that is just so solid now, and that she is using even much more than before, as an alternate weapon (crosscourt, dtl.... acute angles....). The Rome final, was, in fact, against the number two player in the world, yet again. And again a very high tennis quality match, very fast paced, so curiosly matched, heavy spin against hard flat strokes. This match was not as close as the one in Madrid (maybe conditions favored Iga much more this time?), but nevertheles it was GREAT tennis.
On the other hand, I barely watched the ATP matches this time, watched zero of the semis or even the final.

Maybe its the blues, because of the Big 3, all of that, you know, but maybe it is also because of what is going on at the WTA. It is at the very least, worth a shot, to watch a bit, give them a chance. I for sure am.

Are you all watching too? Anyone?
I dip in and out.
But avoid the banshee that is Sabalenka at all costs.
I was more invested when Barty played: she proved that you could be an artist/successful on court amidst a sea of ball bashers.
And the Saudi Arabia decision is nuts.
Hard to respect.

Speaking of ramming politics down our throats, the red hat idiots can't control themselves and have to insert their politics every time they speak. Either discuss tennis or GTFO.

The red hat imbecilles (and any affiliates who share their views) who claim to "love" tennis are liars, as the sport has been a platform for sociopolitical statements across generations. Tennis players live in the world, and are not video game characters who shut off at the end of a match. Osaka's stand was powerful and important, especially when pointed at the red hat rot in the United States.

BLM was/is a grift. Many of them used "race" to raise $ that ended being used to fund personal gain. Very little was used to improve black lives or improve their communities.
There is also the negative effect it's had on law enforcement; most of the victims of criminals tend to be minorities living in poorer areas which "defunded" the police.
basically BLM's net effect on race relations and black communities has been negative. As for Osaka, my dislike for her comes from her mental being weak. She's no Serena Williams.
I don't fault Osaka for being fooled into cheerleading for BLM.

I'm not sure what's wrong w/ Saudi Arabia sponsoring tennis or any other country?
As for Peng Shuai, I still see ads on Reddit asking "where's Peng Shuai." I havent' forgotten her, but I wonder how many of the times up ladies of the WTA would boycott CCP sponsored tournaments?
I have no issue w/ Chinese tournaments; just hate these people who hate on America but suck the teat and take it up the shooter hole for a sponsored buck. Lebron James, friend of Diddy, fits in here too.

...and they have a large presence on this board.
indeed. I see you.

I have no idea which city has benefitted from defunding the police. It was a crap idea.

BLM raised legit issue. But the solution is yet to be found.

It seems to me she's modelled her on-court persona after Rafa, perhaps unconsciously but it seems intentional based on interviews aso.

What irks me, is that she's not really pulling it off. Perhaps no one can tbf. Rafa has this heavy weight boxer, undisputed champ thing going on. Big dog/cat energy, Mike Tyson intensity and dread. Imo, Iga falls into the category as Shelton - and lot of the US WTA women (I would say Collings, but she has more of a crazy lunatic vibe going on). But Shelton has toned it down, and his redeeming grace is his charisma and crowd-winning smile.

indeed. I see you.

You see the reflection in the mirror held up to your face, at the same time you spewed Right Wing extremist talking points.

Some want tennis to return to the country club days where isolationist, manufactured behavior was valued over people and beliefs they either belittled, or attempted to suppress in the social sense. The archives of this board is filled with the posts from some wanting said country club days to return.

Watching Swiatek play is like watching a player in a video game. No variations but constantly full power on both for and back hands. She is effective yes with an ugly style and for me not a joy to watch at all. She is way to close to the ball most of the time, especially on the backhand with looks awkward and I don't think she is able to hit simple slice.
Her style of play is one of the reason people (me) loose interest in tennis.
As a viewer I prefer different game style and variations to number of winning matches and titles.

I get this.
Personally, I feel she had more variety when she created a storm with her first RG title. That said, she had a lot less consistency back then.
But, she does regularly beat Sabalenka.
Every cloud . .

Bow down. 8+ RGs should be the minimum target imo, her groundstrokes are so goddamn good once she finds form

Another dominant performance from Iga at RG. Ties Henin with 4 RG's.

Next stop, the grass season. Hopefully Iga can win her 1st title on grass. Jazda!
Iga's priority this season is Olympics. She wants medal and it's for her dad who was an olympian himself (rowing at Seoul 1988). This time it's on clay and it's on her favourite courts.
My prediction is she skips a run-up to wimby entirely (some made up injury or something). She'll come over to London and probably blast her way through the first couple of rounds and then go out in flames in the 4th round, max QF.

The Iga Show takes a hiatus during the grass court season. That's okay though, some of these Netflix series go away for 2 years in between seasons.

At least she didn't do DRAMA and skipped all natural surfaces and blamed US the fans like Naomi Osaka.
Iga is okay.
