#NextGenATP star Alex de Minaur carries plenty of momentum into the inaugural Huajin Securities Zhuhai Championships, having won his second ATP Tour title at the BB&T Atlanta Open and earned his first Top 10 win at the US Open, where he reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time.

But that wasn’t why the 20-year-old cracked a wide smile at Saturday’s draw ceremony. De Minaur found out he will be playing friend and countryman John Millman for the first time in their opening match at Zhuhai.

It’s an important week for 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals qualifier De Minaur, as he continues his push for a spot at the 21-and-under season finale for the second consecutive year. The Aussie is currently in third place in the ATP Race To Milan with 1,170 points. If he beats Millman, the seventh seed could face former World No. 1 Andy Murray in the second round.

Murray will try to avenge a defeat from the Winston-Salem Open against Tennys Sandgren in his opener. In August, the American battled through a 75-minute first set to eventually claim a 7-6(8), 7-5 victory against the 45-time tour-level titlist.

Murray is seeking the first tour-level singles win of his comeback from hip surgery. The Scot won two matches at an ATP Challenger Tour event last month, and he also won the Fever-Tree Championships doubles crown alongside Feliciano Lopez in his return event in June.

Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas is the top seed at this ATP 250 event, where four of the Top 15 players in the ATP Rankings are competing. The three-time ATP Tour titlist, who has a first-round bye, will play Frenchman Adrian Mannarino or Chinese wild card Ze Zhang in the second round. Third seed Gael Monfils and fifth seed Lucas Pouille are on his half of the draw.

Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, who is pushing for his first berth at the Nitto ATP Finals, will play American Steve Johnson or countryman Pablo Andujar in the second round. Aussie Nick Kyrgios, the sixth seed, looms in his quarter.

ARV wins 1R in a surprisingly easy rout of quasi defending champion Nishioka, 2&1.

Zhuhai is replacing the relatively short-lived Shenzhen Open (2014-18) and Nishioka captured his lone ATP title there last year, advancing from the qualies.

I was wondering what had happened to Shenzhen.

Just noticed Murray has dropped nearly 200 spots to 600+ in the rankings, pre-tournament. He really needs a good showing here.

Currently up a set 6-3 on Tennys Sandgren.

He apparently said he's got a shoulder injury of some sort. Hasn't ruled out shutting things down for the year.

Tsitsipas retired due to tireness, illness in Mannarino match. Tsitsipas was almost could not walk or dizzy at the end!

Murray’s shirt looks like it’s soaked in sweat but I’m sure he would have changed it by now so it must be an effect of the material; not a good look.
DeM 3-4 final set

Two great defensive players but the interminable rallies didn’t make for the most riveting spectacle.
Well done DeM.

Almost three hours (match game seemed like an hour) and it’s another almost positive result. Getting harder to keep my chin up. :(

Congrats to De Minaur blnt Murray 46 62 64, Murray dismissed, Murray's road to recovery stalled.

Cheers

Day 8

Semi Finals Set

RBA v De Minaur

Mannarino v Vinolas

Cheers

The final will be contested between 2 of the first time ATP champions this season.

AdM has been blowing away his opponents in this event. His destruction of a respected top #10 player like RBA is particularly impressive.

Makes me feel a little better that Murray at least took a set off him and ran him closer than most of his other more in-form opponents.

De Minaur completely destroyed RBA. His play in this match was beyond impressive. You thought you were exchanging baseline rallies with him, the next second he’s right at the net. He could not be dropped shot coz he’s so lightening fast. He’s transformed his serve as well it seems. I really liked what I was watching. Hoping for a third title for him tonight. And really pleases he took back #1 Aussie too!

Humid conditions helping this ultra fit brick wall of a player, his opponents are exhausted by the early exchanges.

Congrats to De Minaur blnt RBA 62 62,,De Minaur could do no wrong..

Finals: De Minaur v Mannarino

Cheers

Congrats to Alex on winning his 3rd ATP title (all won this season). He becomes the 1st ever champion in Zhuhai and joins a list of only 6 players to win at least 3 ATP titles this season, the other 5 all being top #10 players (the Big 3 plus Thiem and Medvedev). From tomorrow he will attain his highest ever ranking at #25.

Interesting that he now has exactly the same number of titles, all at the same level, as the #7 ranked player, Tsitsipas.
