Zverev injury causing concern ahead of the Australian Open?

Alexander Zverev did not play his match against Kazakhstan, valid for the quarterfinals of the 2025 United Cup. The mixed team tennis competition, reserved for national teams, did not see the world number 2 take to the field in Perth (Australia) shortly before the match against Alexander Shevchenko.

The reason is an injury to his right arm. The official account of the organization reported the news that the German was forced to withdraw due to a biceps strain. It remains to be seen whether this is a merely precautionary withdrawal, ahead of the Australian Open (12-26 January), or whether there is something serious.

The fact is that Sascha finds himself losing points in the world rankings against Jannik Sinner. Why is this? Zverev, in fact, had a 335-point deadline compared to the last edition of the United Cup played, won by the Teutonic clan. Let's remember that in this competition the value of each victory is given by the combination of two factors:

1. the ranking of the defeated opponent;

2. the phase of the event in which the match was played.

Doing the math, right now, the German had only put together 55 points with his first two victories and therefore for what happened he lost 280 points in the ranking compared to Sinner who had no "bill" to pay at this point in the season. Therefore, as things stand, the advantage margin of the Alto Adige (world no. 1) has risen to 4195 points over the German (11830 vs 7635).

In most likelihood, Raz won't even reach the SFs for a potential clash with Sinner or Novak; so they're safe that way.
However, if he does end up clearing the first 5 hurdles, it'd make him very dangerous for both of our HC specialists.

I know he lost in the QF at 2024 AO, but Alcaraz definitely played well enough to make the SF.
Plus he won Indian Wells 2024, China Open 2024, and was 2-0 vs. Sinner on hardcourt!
No surprise at all to see Alcaraz win 2025 AO :cool: especially since he's obsessed with winning it now!
He always cared way more about winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and he skipped AO 2023.

If Alcaraz wins the 2025 AO it will make Sinner the weirdest #1 EVER :oops:
Sinner with only 2 slam titles despite being 2 years older than Alcaraz (whom will have 5 slam titles at age 21.5 and the career slam!).

Interesting... I wonder how he got this injury during the off-season, and I am happy that this injury was not a problem in 2024 (might be a problem this year though.) Suffering an injury this early into the 2025 season is not a good sign. Hopefully he is able to recover and surprise us all with his first grand slam title!!! ;):p

He didn't look impressive that week (a continuation post wimbledon 23 triumph) apart from the Kecmanovic match, where everyone expected a slugfest but Alcaraz half-volleyed his way through & blasted the Serb away in a lopsided score.

If not for Zverev's stupidities at 5-3 on serve in the 3rd set, he'd have defeated Alcaraz by dropping just 7 games in a slam QF.

Zverev always disappoints.
