Hope he has a good grass season, between the finals in Halle last year and the run to the 4th round/loss in 5 to former finalist at Wimbledon he made impressive progress on the good run in Halle in 2016. In fact results wise I think Wimbledon has been (not saying much, I know) the one he's performed best at to date (first one he ever qualified for, only one he's not lost in first round of)

No. 1 in the race and not even a slam semi?
So, so sad. Reminds me of Safina, Janckovic,
Who is last No. 1 ATP player to never have a slam championship?

Only Rios. Well known example. Or do you mean only the race? in which case i have no idea ;)

Seeing as Federer skipped the entire Clay Season and Rafa skipped some tournaments its not shocking. Looking at the race he is #2, but he has 10 tournaments. Rafa only has 6 and is first, Federer has 7 and is 3rd. When the 2 best players on the tour have missed tournaments due to choice or injury other people are going to end up filling in the gaps. Sheer volume can help....and if you want to complain well...The 2 best have not played huge seasons so far.

Edit he has been to the finals of 3 masters this year: Miami, Madrid and Rome, he won Madrid. That would explain a sizable chunk of his points.

In fact Federer had only 4 tournaments (Australian Open, Rotterdam, Indian Wells and Miami). If 7 is shown somewhere then it is because he had a so-called 0-point-“penalty” for skipping mandatory Masters (Madrid, Rome) and Roland Garros.

I understand that, and someone has to fill the gap. Say whatever you want about Zverev, of the 5 masters so far, he has been to the finals of 3 (winning one) and made the SF of MC. Granted he may struggle at the majors but he has been stepping it up elsewhere.

Thats the major complaint with these guys. It is that they will win because when Fedal retires someone just has to.

Yeah people like Thiem a lot and say he for sure is gonna win an RG. Or Zverev is a future ATG blah blah it's because someone literally will be number 1 after 1 and 2 retire.

Well, thats the tour that Fed and Rafa are currently winning against. They are so good everyone else LOOKS horrible. But at least at the masters Zverev this year has been stepping it up. 5 masters played, made the SF of 4, the finals of 3 and won 1. That would be a solid record at masters level for any player.

Why doesn't Rafa have 8 in that case.... seeing he skipped Indian Wells and Miami?

Good question, he really should have 8 then. Then the ATP must be wrong here, because the tournaments actually played were definitely 4 and 6.

By the way, I’m quite sure that both Roger and Rafa will be well ahead of Zverev at the end of the year.
