Zverev says Tsitsipas didn’t play well and that the match was pathetic

Lol. Bratty remark. Every top player when not speaking out of emotion im sure would say that when you arent playing your A game its about executing what you can in an intelligent way. Tsistipas played a smart match by coming to the net and pushing Zverev back behind the baseline where he couldnt easily step in and flatten out the ball to take time away from Tsistipas' big swings. Beyond that it was a test of mental toughness, especially in the 2nd set tiebreak. We've heard top players say things along these lines right after a defeat before in a post match interview for example, but to tweet it out after hes had time to think about it is poor sportsmanship.

On the one hand, it would have been nice to Zverev to give a little bit more credit to Tsitsipas for hanging tough and stepping it up.

On the other hand, as much as I dislike some of what he does his comments were 100% accurate, IMO. This was a really inconsistent match from both guys, with Stefanos being slightly less inconsistent in the end. Too bad Zverev doesn't have Roddick's gift for pressers, guarantee Andy would have been able to spin that into something halfway funny.

Wow. I've never really been on the Zverev hate train but I think this is the turning point. I have honestly never heard such an arrogant, smug post-match comment. Say what you want about Kyrgios and Tomic, not even they would trash someone who beat them like this. Truly a classless thing to say.

Same. I've defended him in the past because he was just a bit cocky and full of himself (Which is fine for a sports player imo) but this is kind of low and disgusting and i don't approve of anyone saying anything like this about a fellow player, even if its true.

Tsitsipas is not inferior player ... get over your pain and realize that Zverev is a really good player but pushed ahead before anybody else in order to fill this incoming void ... once the void seems to be filled ... Time to create the new "rival" business and keep the Tour going ...

Zverev-Tsitsipas ...

Pick your side ...

IMO - that was amazing level of tennis ! They both knew what is at stake, after their last match ...

Amazing level for very young guys mind you, plenty of room to improve for both of them ...

And once the match is done - new reality sets in ... this is the rivarly of the next decade

Less than 50% first serves alone show that Tsitsipas didn’t play well. But he was better smarter than Zverev and outplayed him when it mattered.
I did also win matches where I played terribly, even worse than my opponent. But yeah: I won. And my opponent knew I had played cr*p and was allowed to say so.

There were some great points but the match wasn't played at a super high level(like Nadal Wawrinka or even Nadal Cilic). It looked like Zverev thought he had already won when he was up in the second set and was thinking about the next match and then when he lost the second set, his mind didn't want to come back from the future.

99% of tennis matches at the pro level aren't at an "amazing level." Few even have points this good:

I have to stop you there.
1) That wasn't a great point by any means
2) One 'good' point doesn't define a match
3) The quality of the match really was horrendous. Look at the stats as well.

I don't care what Zverev said or didn't say - the reality is that that match was awful.

If Tsitsipas did not play well but beat Zverev, then Zverev must have played like shîîît.
I was right. Just saw a replay. Zverev volleyed like shīt just before the match point and then served a shítty DF to give Tsitsipas the match. LOL .

Playing crap is usually not reflected in a score board ... Why focusing on his bad stat on first serve. One and only stat that matters in tennis is ... WIN/LOSS

I had guy crying that my forehand did not go cross court to his forehand deep enough and it was too short ... sure, he is stronger, but he was out of position because my returns were too short ... he lost big time ! inferior player won

Zverev not giving any credit to Tsitispas.."I don't think he played that well. I think the match was absolutely pathetic on all levels. I'm very honest with you guys (press). Today was an absolute pathetic match I don't even think he played well"

What the actual hell is wrong with this guy? This sounds like something Nick would say. Maybe I was being too generous in comparing him to young Federer because of his volatility, but little Fed would never disrespect his opponent like that. Jesus
That's enough to justify me jumping onto the ABZ bandwagon for now.

Kyrgios would never say that.

Would like to see a video TBH. He apparently said "he didn't play THAT well" it's different from "he didn't play well". Don't make **** up! He was probably asked about tsirsipas's play.

Leave Sascha alone. The likes of Federer & Serena have made comments like that before. And they were twice his age! He will be a champion.

Agree. Fed basically whined this way after Nole manned up on MP in the 2011 USO. Serena has definitely done this too.

Zverev was clearly ungracious in defeat and needs to do better next time. I think he hates losing to guys younger to him but doesn’t mind losing to FEDAL.

I think it was Andre Agassi who said it best: something along the lines of the beauty of tennis is you don't always have to play well to win---you just have to play better than the other guy

Exactly, and Zverev lost to a player who didn't play that well. Why should he say otherwise?

For real. I didn't really have any problems with him other than the fact that I think he's a boring player, but this is new level of arrogance.

Yes the match had some rough spots in level of play, but there was also some really great shotmaking at times. Maybe he doesn't like a younger player stealing some of his thunder, I dunno. Best response to this match is some pc crap like "my level wasn't where it needed to be for an entire match." That's how I saw it anyway. He played pretty well at times, but crap at others. Same for Tsitsipas, but it looked like he was struggling a lot in the third and he managed to pull it out. Good stuff.

This is setting the bar pretty low, isn't it?

Serena is the definition of classless in press conferences, and Federer is one of the most arrogant male players I've ever seen

As this discussion is going on I have to definitely and once for all declare my stand that Alexander Zverev is an a.sho...e and I hope he loses every match from now on ... Since that is not the reality (guy is a world class tennis player) I am declaring myself in "anybody but Zverev" camp. Lose in every 1/2 finals an then at the age of 28 and on lose in e very final ... Maybe win 4-5

Federer made some not-so-kind comments about Murray after losing to him at 08 Dubai.
Let's not forget these ones:

Federer on Nadal:

"He's quite one-dimensional with his game," Federer said of Nadal’s game. "I thought I actually saw the way I should play against him. The more I play him, the better it is for me." (2006)

"The French Open is always going to be hard as long as Rafa Nadal is around," says the 32-year-old Swiss. "But on the other surfaces, if I am playing well, it's more in my racquet than in anybody else's racquet."
(2013)

Federer on Djokovic:

"I played four times against him. Never lost. [...] But, yeah, I mean, like himself, he says nothing outrageous in his game. Always pretty predictable, which is a good thing." (2007)

Asked about the quite remarkable forehand winner Djokovic hit to save match point, Federer reckoned the Serb did not look at that point like someone "who believes much anymore in winning. To lose against someone like that, it's very disappointing, because you feel like he was mentally out of it already. Just gets the lucky shot at the end, and off you go." (2011)

BONUS - Federer on himself:

"My mental toughness has always been overshadowed by my virtuosity, my shot-making, my technique, my grace." (2017)

And I have to stop you right there. I never said it was a great point. I said it was a good point, and there is an enormous difference between "great" and "good." Roger Federer is a great tennis player. Donald Young is a good player.

See what I mean?

Oh but he was speaking the plain truth here :p

Quite honestly, we are holding a 21 year old to very high standards. He will learn just like Fed has learnt to tone it down after several defeats to his fiercest rivals.

However, if the match was bad, it was bad. No two ways about it.
