That match was painful to watch. Zverev absolutely should have won and instead we got Mr "Gay Porn Soundtrack" as a 'Grand Slam Champion'

Thiem was not the better player whatsoever that night.

Zverev was all over him, pure destruction the first 2 sets. And then he choked and fell apart about as badly as you’ll ever see a professional tennis player do it. And then the 5th set was just pure farce.

It was a horrific choking display on both sides. Thiem was flatter than a pancake in the opening stages DESPITE being the favourite, Zed didn't really do anything special to get out to a 2 set lead. And by design, Thiem just let Zverev press the self-destruct button in set 3

The decisive moment that won Thiem the match was the penultimate point. It was 6-6 in the fifth set tiebreak, where Thiem took a risk and hit a forehand winner, while Zverev always played it safe and defensive.

Thiem was just lucky winning that night. Now that his physique is gone, he cant come back to top tennis, because that was like 95% of his playstyle. Simple facts.

He shouldn't have won it

Both Zverev and Thiem are big chokers. It was battle of who chokes less. It's not like Zverev was playing big 3.

A Grand Slam is the ultimate mental test. You have to win seven matches in the best of five format. Both players were clearly new to the greatest stage in tennis and struggled with their focus. Zverev's mental fatigue manifested in his second serve. He doesn't have a kick serve and hitting two big first serves is not sustainable especially in big moments. He served 68 mph at one point....and won 41% of his second serve points for the match. There is the difference in the match right there....

I wish we had seen a complete Roland Garros 2022....Sacha was playing at a very high level on a pretty big stage try to accomplish the most difficult task in all of tennis.

Exactly. I'd even say zverev should have won the uso '21 but he choked against Djokovic and set up Medvedev for the win. He potentially also had an rg win in him against Nadal before he got injured.

Nadal was so vulnerable in that edition, it's not even funny. Zverev as usual, choked.

I do agree that his domestic abuse allegations are troubling...there is a long list of incidents and if she was from the US...this would have surfaced and been dealt with already. Its a bit easier to dodge the bullets from Russia and Germany....for the time being.

that 5th set was rough...but honestly the extreme choking had a certain entertainment value of its own, the tension was crazy...not the best tennis but you couldn't help but get caught up it the spectacle with so much on the line.
