Zverev's father positive

Legend

German tennis player Tobias Kamke confirmed that Alexander Zverev Sr., father of the tennis player number 7 in the ATP ranking, tested positive for coronavirus. His son Michael was going to participate in the Trieste Challenger but was logically disqualified as soon as the news was known and both left for Monte Carlo, where they reside. Although he has some symptoms, he is stable and out of danger.

On the eve of the start of the Trieste Challenger, which takes place in Italy, the German tennis player Mischa Zverev withdrew from the main draw alleging personal problems, immediately on the "planet tennis" there was speculation about a possible contagion of him or his father by COVID -19, and so it was, because it was confirmed that the former player, now a coach, tested positive for coronavirus.

The day after S ascha Zverev was eliminated after falling 3-6 6-3 5-7 against Scotsman Andy Murray in the second round of the Cincinnati Open , it was confirmed that his father and coach tested positive for coronavirus. He was expected to travel to New York in the next few days to be with his son, who has yet to play the US Open, but for obvious reasons he will not.

Tobias Kamke, a 34-year-old player, number 233 in the ATP ranking , said that Zverev Sr. has symptoms, although they are not serious, such as a slight fever and a cold. As soon as they knew the result, Mischa was disqualified from the tournament that is played in Trieste, Italy, and both flew to Monte Carlo, the neighborhood of the principality of Monaco where the Zverev family resides.

Alexander Zverev Sr. is 60 years old, so he is part of the risk group and his care must be more rigorous. Mischa and Sascha's father was born in Sochi, Russia, and had a short career as a professional tennis player. He has a record of 5 wins and 16 losses in official matches, and his best position in the ATP ranking was reached in March 1985 when he reached position number 175.

Sascha Zverev’s father found positive to the Coronavirus casting doubts about the US Open

Alexander Zverev can’t say he has a good relationship with the Coronavirus. The German sensation was recently slammed by the media after he broke his pledge to self-isolate after he participated in the Adria Tour. Now, as reported by the Italian media, Sascha’s father was tested positive in Italy where he was with his other son Mischa that is in the draw of a challenger in Trieste.

Will Zverev play the US Open?

The protocols are quite strict at the US Open, where the organization removed 2 players (Guido Pella and Hugo Dellien) from the Western & Southern Open because their physio tested positive to Covid-19. Both Guido and Hugo tested negative, but the organization enforced the strict protocol. Some other players, such as Novak Djokovic, protested about the decision, but nothing changed.

Fortunately, Mischa tested negative twice and if he tests negative for the 3rd time, he will be allowed to play the tournament in Trieste. However, it is now unclear what is going to be Sascha’s fate. The world no.7 is in New York for 6 days and therefore if required, he might need to self isolate and skip the Western & Southern Open to be in time to play the US Open (if he keeps on testing negative). However, the German has been in touch with many other people in the hotel, so it’s really not clear what is going to happen.

Let’s hope everything will be fine and we can enjoy seeing Sascha back on court.

Sascha Zverev vs. Andy Murray. Preview

In theory, Sascha should face Andy Murray in the 2nd round of the Western & Southern Open.

Alexander Zverev and Andy Murray played each other once. The head to head is 1-0 for Murray. When they played, Andy Murray won 6-1 6-2 6-3 in the 1st round in Melbourne (Australian Open) in January 2016.

Now ranked no.7, Zverev played his last match on the 26th of February when he was overcome by Tommy Paul 6-3 6-4 in the 2nd round in Acapulco.

Alexander Zverev’s best achievement of this year was reaching the semi-finals at the Australian Open.

Murray in New York, ranking, and results in 2020

Now ranked no.129, Andy has a 1-0 win-loss record in 2020. The Brit is competing in New York where he ousted Frances Tiafoe 7-66
3-6 6-1.

Andy Murray will fight against Zverev in the 2nd round. The head to head is 1-0 for Murray.

Murray won 46 titles in his career: 20 on hard courts, 3 on clay courts, 14 on indoor courts, 1 on carpet courts and 8 on grass courts.

What are the rules in the US if you have had recent contact with someone who tests positive for Covid-19? In the UK you would be required to self isolate for 14 days even without symptoms.

I read it and don't see how it effects sascha ?
He was in contact with his father before going to US. There is a possibility that Alex brought the virus from Adria Tour to his family and to US. Asymptomatic super spreader is a recipe for a new outbreak. There are people that carry the virus with no symptom at all and these people endanger the more vulnerable people.

Alex also broke the quarantine rule after leaving Adria Tour and was seen in a crowded party.

There is a stronger possibility you or me are asymptomatic cases

So what will they do then?

You and @Zara always have to correct my English.

CDC estimates 40% of transmission are via asymptomatic carriers.

But Zverev was asymptomatic AND repeatedly tested negative in Serbia, despite stripping naked in the Belgrade night clubs and hugging infected Djoker and Dumitrov.

Zverev does not fit the profile of asymptomatic transmission.

Zverev likely acquired immunity from his December China trip.

"My friend Brenda and I were in China on December 28. You can't imagine how I coughed for a month in Australia. I had a fever for two or three days and I coughed for five or six hours. Brenda too. We didn't know what it was. It was a cough that I never had. I had no pain, but I coughed continuously every 10 seconds.
I had no pain, but I coughed continuously every ten seconds."

I just don't know what to say.
I guess it matters when Z was last in close contact with his father. Why has this family had multiple connections to the virus? Is it that they are careless?

Very confusing. Isn't Zverev already in the US? Is his father with him? And doesnt he have to test upon arrival and there after as well?
It is confusing. Odd they don’t say whether Sascha was tested upon arrival in the US. Or when he was last in contact with his dad. I just hope he does not turn up positive and no other cases come about, either. Looking forward to Murray and Zverev!

Sounds like he definitely did have the virus back then! Symptoms fit to a T.

I am trying to break boundaries.

for some folks self-isolation means going out to restaurants, like nothing ever happened.

True!
In Italy they have tested the most for anti bodies in the world and they just released the results, we know for sure now that people with no symptoms at all spread the virus. 1 out of 4 with antibodies did not have any symptoms at for the virus.

Let's be honest. It doesn't matter whether he will participate or not. He's hardly great to watch and he's not going to win it.

Let's suppose asymptomatic Zverev tested negative before entering Italy to visit his family. He could still transmit to his family? We thought testing negative means he is far less likely to spread.

He is just one out of hundreds of people that could spread it there, one small mistake and it’s spread around. That we are discussing Zverev here and that w his dad, is probably just a fraction of what’s happening. We only hear about the known ones.

Not much we can do and just hope everything will be all right. Just be happy for every day with tennis we get!! I’m so tired of discussing it, not much we can do anyway than trust the system that’s been set up.

Enjoy!

^"There are five labs nationwide that service the 32 teams, with only the New Jersey facility having the false positives this weekend."

they came all back negative after testing again, so had nothing to do with the covid test as such.

Thought false positives were very rare.
What a mess... How can the public ever trust the numbers that we are being told?

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL had 77 positive COVID-19 tests from 11 teams re-examined by a New Jersey lab after false positives, and all those tests came back negative.
The league asked the New Jersey lab BioReference to investigate the results, and those 77 tests are being re-tested once more to make sure they were false positives.

even 2% is not a small percentage when it comes to the fate of an athlete at the USO.
and most of the time the reason is not the covid test directly, but human error like wrong calibration or software.
that's why i suggested to test a second time after a positive test. at the second test one could focus better and avoid mistakes.
since the error margin of the actual test is so small, one could argue that indeed 2 positive tests should be required (provided time permits it).

USO testing can collect two samples from a player at the same time and send it out to two different labs. A player will have to test positive from both labs in order to be removed from tournament.

This way there is no time constraint issue of having to perform two tests at two different times.
