New Phantom Pro (18x20) (320)

Haven't really considered many of the new Prince sticks for whatever reason, but some of them do look interesting... Have been thinking of going back to denser string patterns, but at same time I think 16x19 helped me a lot on the backhand.

Might be demo time when it starts warming up.

High flexing frames really do need a tighter pattern for good directional control. The phantom 100 pro hoop shape is quite round. It seems more like a 101.5 to me.

I admire the Phantom Pro 100 P greatly. The hoop shape isn't a real problem for me, just a mental one. But then I tell myself that this makes it wider across the face, and hence more amenable to putting spin on the ball. You can do a lot with this frame. I opted for the Textreme Tour 100 P simply because I felt it was more powerful from the baseline, which I feel I need.

Very interested in demoing the frame. I have the ported Phantom 100 and the 93P. While the 100 is comfortable as all get out, the consistency and power levels are a bit low. I hit better with the 93P for sure. But if you give the 100 some 93P characteristics (bit more SW and HL balance) and a tighter string bed, you might have a great racket.

I had a similar experience. Thought for sure the 100 pro would be my new frame over the summer, but then things feel apart for me in league singles. Eventually found my way to the newest TT 100p and simply adore it. But the purists might still like this new pro with a powerful gut or multi, even a little more. Basically: need powerful strings in the pro, but then need a tight pattern to control those strings. Not to mention more mass to make up for the inherent frame bend.

My choice really boiled down to which frame did I think I could play with for two long matches (or three) per day. If I just worried about having stamina for one match, I'd go with the Phantom Pro 100P. But I need to find something I can swing for all-day tournament play and not get worn down.

I play 1hbh, and I hit it a bit flatter at times, which is where I think a more open pattern has helped me with a higher launch angle + more topspin.

This looks promising. I liked the comfort and control, but I never quite meshed with the Phantom 100 variants because they were so spin-oriented and I like a bit more plow to help smooth out my swing. This could be a better fit.

I find this new model extremely interesting, but having bought 3 93P and 2 PP100P in the space of a year, this madness has to stop.

Still, the combination of head size, static weight, balance, stiffness and string pattern is extremely tempting...

Gotta complete the 3-2-1 collection!

Are these not shipping yet or the weather has been bad in the temperate parts of the US where no one has gotten a chance to hit with the new PP100 (18x20) yet? I'm surprised no one has even posted any remarks regarding their first hand impressions of this new frame after receiving it.

It’s been raining like crazy here in Socal. Also I’m waiting for my local shop to see if they will carry them(this and the new 93p). They brought in the other 93p and the Pro 100p but so far it doesn’t look good for them carrying these 2. Just not enough demand they say. Too bad because their prices are very good.

I’ve been having the same conversation with (I’m guessing) the same shop. If we get enough customers, maybe we can meet the minimums.

Let’s all call several times a day with fake voices to influence their decision!

I like this idea a lot. I live pretty close as well and was planning on going in person a few times per week, now I’ll wear a disguise. Lol

Interesting point, because it shows how distribution and marketing are related. I like that Prince spends a lot in R&D to deliver good products, rather than endorsement / marketing. But this means that they don't generate enough demand, and their distribution suffers as a consequence.

In any case, where my mind's at right now is probably testing a leather grip on the PP100P. That will make the frame more headlight (which is one of the features I like very much in the 93P), while getting a static weight around 320g, which I feel is is right for me, the 93P being a tad heavy and the PP100P a tad light.

Yea I was told that they have to order a bunch to hit the minimums-I’m guessing to keep their prices low-so they can’t just bring like 2-3 in for just me. Def interested in how you like the 100p. I honestly think the Phantoms are the best line of frames out right now. Prince as a whole actually may have the best overall lineup. Something for everyone.

Prince just needs a talented player to bear the P. Even at the club level to get some heads turning. Maybe a bit of persuasion to that player we know that always has arm issues. I feel like it's been the word on the street lately along with the Wilson clash.

I heard in Asian countries Prince is more easily found in stores. My brother visited Japan and said it was the Wilsons he didn't see much of.

Tell the doctor that I'll order one.

I really, really like the PP100P. I love the 93P, but it's quite a challenging frame to play, especially in a protracted singles game. The PP100P in stock form is easier to play, while having a similar feel to the 93P. A bit more power, a higher launch angle, which helps in defense and to find more depth. The flipside is a little less accuracy and plow through. As I wrote in another thread, I will reserve my 93P's for doubles and play the PP100P's for singles. I might experiment with a leather grip for the reasons I mentioned above, plus the fact that I like how leather feels under an overgrip.

I think Japan is a very specific market for Prince, which seems to get a lot of their attention as they come up every year with Japan only models. They must be popular over there to warrant this effort.

I don't think any other Asian market gets anywhere as much attention from them.

I think Japan ends up being the test market for Prince. Release a lot of ideas into that market and see what the players like before bringing it to the rest of the world.

Of course its weird they haven't opened up the coffers to get someone like Osaka or Nishikori sponsored. That seems like a no brainer from a marketing standpoint especially competing with Yonex out there.

Arriving tomorrow! Stringing it up after work and going to play some mixed. I normally play with the 16x18 Pro strung at 45/43.

Can’t wait to hear how it is! Are you thinking of going thinner/looser to compensate for the tighter string pattern?

What strings do you typically use? My Phantom Pro 100 was a demo I bought, and it came string with Prince Tour XC, which I had never tried before. I feel like something about that string helped make it a magical experience, but I don’t know for sure.

I normally play with Prince Tour XP 17g, but I'm running low on it. I bought some of the new Diablo 17g and Diablo Prism 16g - stiffness numbers were close to Tour XP. I will see if I have enough of the Tour XP, if I do, I will string it and then the Diablo 17g at same tension and drop 2 lbs on the Prism 16g.

This could well be the case.

Another possibility is that, for whatever reason, Prince is popular there while it's not that popular in other markets. Maybe they've had distributors there who have been doing a great job pushing the brand over many years, and therefore it makes sense to have Japan only models.

I've worked quite a bit with Japanese operations in various companies in the past 13 years I have been in Asia, and what always struck me was how specific this market is. You have best selling items in other large markets (US, Europe, Australia, China) that completely flop in Japan. And then you have obscure products that no other market wants who end up being a hit in Japan. It sometimes feels like they operate on a completely different planet. I personally love Japan and the Japanese, but doing business there can be quite disorienting.

A little earlier than expected! But I strung it up with the Prism 16g at 43/41 afterall. Strung with overgrip and dampener, the racquet came in at 350g compared to my 16x18 at 333g. Excited to go play some doubles!
One noticeable difference is the paint is more matte than shiny as is my 16x18.

Being geographically isolated and significantly xenophobic has definitely influenced that culture along very different lines from most of the Western world. They are the unique snowflakes of the modern world. I like their kookiness as it adds a little flavor to the human experience.

Been seeing waves of that everywhere the past few years (Europe, isolated incidents in US etc). Racism and xenophobia is on the rise globally, unfortunately. I finished my doctorate in 2015 and this was part of my dissertation back then. I doubt things have changed for the better.

Yeah but Japan was like this going way back to pre WWII. They've always been less multicultural with far less immigration than you'd expect for an industrialized nation. 98% of the population is ethnically Japanese. That's crazy homogeneity.

Even the most nationalistic European country is nowhere near that degree of "ethnic purity".

So their uniqueness sets them apart that way including their taste in tennis rackets.

Yes, my point was as a corollary to yours regarding xenophobia, right wing ultranationalist rhetoric, and racism etc that are on the up.

I am not sure if they are xenophobic toward everybody.

For example, they might be xenophobic toward other Asians but admire top countries in western world.
In their anime's, they tend to draw asians and africans like white people.

Another sign of their unique look on things. Maybe xenophobia is the wrong word because I don't think they hate western culture, but they seem to isolate themselves from it and don't let it overtake their own unique culture. They just grab the odd thing that strikes their fancy and often its entirely different than what becomes popular in the Western World.
