I think the answer is fairly obvious. A lot of Fed fans live vicariously through his wins, and Nadal is the one guy mopping the floor with him. This angers them because somehow they feel personally humiliated at this, as if Federer's losses or wins have anything to do whatsoever with their own lives. However this is true in all sports with all kinds of sports fans I think. I mean just look at what you get at football, baseball and basketball games...
That's my theory anyway.

Nadal is what tennis needed in this era imo. A kid who's not afraid of anyone and has the technique and physique to beat everyone on a clay court and maybe more one day. He diverges from the typical player style like Federer for example who tries to look elite and elegant all the time but he brings a different taste to the ATP.
People like Nadal, Canas and co are here to stay so get used to it.
Nadal takes counterpunching almost literally, in that regardless of lead, any given break can feel like the beginning of a comeback. This mentality translates really well for non-fans of tennis. His mindset, I wish Agassi had.
Both guys really diverge from the norm, really. I was a big fan of Federer pre-2003 because he played a uniquely elegant style of tennis. The key point being uniquely elegant -- a Safin-style monster game is the ideal for most tennis fans, not the psuedo-classical style Fed was kinda inching. That said, Fed's moved away from that for the sake of percentage tennis, though. Nowadays it's up-and-down guys like Gasquet who I'd like to watch for the sake of watching.
