Long Live Roger Federer

He really looked like the best thing ever but...it was easy for him. Once he got worthy competition he wasn't dominant. So you may love his style the most, that's fine and understandable but he's not the best player that played the game, period.

Roger Federer needs no defense from haters here. He’s the ultimate class act, phenomenal spokesman, and in my opinion, the greatest tennis player there ever was. His records may have fallen, but those who watched him in his prime know…they know.
You're damn right. He is and always will be the GOAT. Most beautiful game in history.

He won 6 of the last 7 matches against Nadal. What do you think about that?

Why do you feel the need to discuss his rank among others in the post if he's so omnipotent

And against Djokovic ?
too little, too late.

he will be the 3rd best of this generation. Which by default does not make him GOAT. And that's that.
Good thing he wasn't a part of "this generation" as much as Dimitrov isn't a part of "this" Djokodal generation.

Thanks for the nice words OP. Proves that irrespective of which fan base you belong to, you can show respect and grace when a legend hangs up their boots. Need more of you here. Tbf, most of the fans from the other fan bases have been gracious and respectful of Federer and his contributions. Heartening to see. And then there are the trolls.. but who cares lol.

I agree. But he shose to stick around, didn't he ? He chose to name Nadal as his greatest opponent, ignoring players in his age group in the process (wonder why ?).......so he placed himself in this gen of players. And he was beaten by them. Otherwise he should have retired in 2014. But he didn't.

You can't have your cake and eat it to.

His legacy is secure. He will live in the hearts of his fans and the minds of his haters equally

He ruined many a career, he improved hundreds of players , chief among them being Novak.

The current crop of players all look up to him when it comes to ‘How to be the best version you can be ‘.

He elevated tennis to new levels and brought more people to the sport than anyone in the near term can think of

Numbers also show Fed is 6 years older than each. Plus his H2H against Nole is negligible. Fed is the GOAT
You can't have you cake and eat it to. He has played most of his pro matches against both, when compared to other players. Which means, he himself chose to play longer than other players in his gen. He also promoted his rivalry with Nadal, painting him as his greatest rival. So you cannot say that he didn't seek better players as rivals, than those who he started his career with. Since he did that knowingly, he was beaten by them convicingly. That's that. He is not greater than his 2 biggest rivals.

-the GOAT tittle comes with requirements
-as the GOAT, you cannot get BOOOed by the crowd
-how often does Federer get BOOOed??? never!
-how often does Djoker get BOOOed? ALOT/everytime he step on court, everytime he speaks, which means djoker=NOT a GOAT!

-oh yeah, one more thing, you cannot be the goat by being a PUSHER!
-PUSHER game/style is just not GOAT material!, sorry....

You wanna know what the real requirement is. Coming from somebody who has been watching tennis since the early 80's.

You must be Western European or American.

Eastern Europeans are not welcomed to be discussed for Greatness. For more references ask Lendl (arguably the grandfather of today's game, and a GREATER player than McEnroe ever dreamed of being), Navratilova, and Seles.

Let's not beat around the bush here.

As a goat, you should be able to win in the face of adversity, which Novak did the most. Being pampered and loved makes things as easy as possible for you :sneaky:

Roger will live way beyond the numbers guys - greatness is not just measured by statistics.

Without him the game would not be as popular as it is now and his greatest rivals would not be anywhere near the players they are today. His name is synonymous with tennis.

Anyways, this thread is about celebrating Roger Federer not about who's GOAT - of which there are several breeds anyway.

-the real problem i see/have is that there is no replacement for Federer
-no player even comes close
-the smoothness, clean, effortless game style is unique
-even Sampras did not seem as clean and/or effortless as Federer
-i hate to say it, but the end of "the Federer era" is what we are seeing now!
-all we are left with is "baseline 2hbh grinders/pushers/drama queens" (n)
-thanks goodness we now have PICKLEBALL!! haaaaa
-maybe thats the answer, RF can pick up a pickleball paddle and dominate the game for another 20 years! :giggle:(y)o_O

Undeniably one of the greatest reasons for the popularity of the sport and his name is obviously one of the first that comes to mind when tennis is discussed.

No he didn't create tennis - whoever said that?

And yes it did exist before Roger - the guy in your name will attest to that.

This thread is about celebrating Roger - which is what I am doing - your sarcasm is as tired as your poast.

He placed himself in that generation sure, but so did he when Sampras and co were still active. He clearly doesn't belong to that generation, does he?

He is of his own generation but he also had lovely rivalries with Djokodal. Both statements are true because he was clearly good enough to hang with prime ATGs give or take even as he ceased to have the age advantage and it turned disadvantageous to him.

The numbers don't lie pal.......he was 3rd best behind the other 2. Talking about who has a better haircut, or who is more "graceful" is SUBJECTIVE.

The hips don’t lie. Numbers lie all the time, pal.

Folks here get confused here between being ‘loved’ vs being the ‘greatest’. You gotta earn the title of being the GOAT . We will know the outcome by the time Djokovic and nadal retire.
Let’s not get carried away with the fact being loved the most = greatest.

On the same note Sharapova was very much loved than Serena through her entire career. Doesn’t take anything away from Serena nor Sharapova qualifies to be greatest based on ‘love’ :). If you like Federer , fine move on. You don’t need to justify his greatness with numbers since they are not in his favor. It’s currently held by his Great rival Nadal

Even then you have to look at total context and other stats. Fed is clearly better on grass and hardcourt (perhaps the greatest ever on these surfaces peak for peak compared to the only other contenders, Djokovic or Pete), significantly more weeks at number 1 than Nadal, etc.

there’s a very, very strong case for Federer being the GOAT, and anyone who’s watched tennis since at least the early 2000s knows this. His peak level hasn’t been matched yet

As always, Federer detractors love to ignore facts.

If age isn't a factor then how many slam did Nole won between 2003-2012? Federer who's the most dominant player of all time won 17 slams at that stretch. Truth is, Djokovic had to wait until Federer past his prime.

Love how they throw in irrelevant individual H2H without acknowledge that win/loss against the playing field is makes more sense to judge who's the best tennis player overall.

Nah, it won't be known when they retire because there will never be a universal GOAT. Even in basketball, the GOAT debate is brought up many, many times each year on ESPN and Michael Jordan is probably much closer to being a universal GOAT in basketball than anyone has or ever will be in tennis

He finished his career as third best of his own era, so the chances of him being viewed as greatest of all time by future generations of tennis fans is precisely zero.

But of course Federer fans think he is the greatest. That's why most of them are fans. It's like your own mother thinking you were the best in the school play. It has to do with bias, not objective reality.

D.Nalby12

G.O.A.T.
Federer got surpassed because of Vacuum era. If couple of ATG level players made breakthrough 5-6 years back - Federer would retire on top. 20 Slams was more than enough but who knew there would come time when players born in entire decade would win just 2-3 Slams.

Anyway bottom line is Federer will always remain best player on grass, fast hard and indoors. He peaked way higher and achievements are superior.

Many people started following Tennis just because of Federer. He was the magnet that attracted uninterested public to sport. No need to mention many fans who had lost interest after departure of Sampras got involved again. Federer made Tennis much more popular than it was before..
