Here's what's even worse: She told The State (Columbia, SC paper) that she misunderstood the question:
"I didn't do anything wrong. I wasn't expecting (the question). I lost my train of thought."
The only way that isn't more pathetic would be if the contestants were told the question in advance, but she wasn't asked the question she was expecting.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - This time, the question was a little easier for Miss Teen South Carolina. After being stumped by a Miss Teen USA pageant question on live television Friday night, Lauren Caitlin Upton's confused, mangled response has been drawing a lot of attention.
The 18-year-old got a chance to redeem herself Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show when she was again asked why one-fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a map.
"I would love to re-answer that question," Upton said. "Well personally, my friends and I, we know exactly where the United States is on our map. I don't know anyone else who doesn't. And if the statistics are correct, I believe there should be more emphasis on geography."
That was much better than her previous response, which included "U.S. Americans" and mentions of South Africa and "the Iraq."
A YouTube video of Upton has drawn a couple million hits and thousands of comments, many of them with harsh remarks for the Lexington High School graduate who plans to attend Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.
Upton was taking her flubbed answer — and the attention — in stride.
"Everything did come at me at once. I was overwhelmed and I made a mistake. Everybody makes a mistake. I'm human," she said Tuesday. "I seriously think I only heard about one or two words of the actual question."
Upton's former principal Creig Tyler remembered her as a well-rounded student.
"She took college-prep and honors courses and performed well," Tyler told The (Columbia) State newspaper.
Miss Teen Colorado Hilary Carol Cruz won the crown. Upton was third runner-up.

I'm not as concerned with her "answer" as I am with the question. If it's true
1/5th of Americans can't find their own country on the map then that's truly sad.
I hate to sound like a dinosaur but maybe if our schools spent less time pushing a social agenda or trying to make sure every kid's self esteem was treated with kid gloves, maybe we would have students that actually know something when they get out into the real world!
School administraters do kids no favors by treating school life like a non competitive game of Candyland.

I might say that, in addition to the lack of geography study in public schools (thanks to the emphasis on testing), our society in general is too obsessed with ourselves to give serious consideration to our place in the world, both literally and figuratively, or to those who share that world with us.

I would actually like to see how they collected the data that shows 1/5 of America can't find their country on a map. I seriously don't know any adults that would not be able to do this. I could see someone asking a person not speaking english not being able to do it because they didn't understand the question. A lot of these surveys can be easily skewed by the population selected and the methodology of data collection. If you asked people in a mall or shopping center who were busy and in a hurry- alot of them may not want to be bothered and just say "I don't know" and walk on.
I gave my daughter in kindergarten last year a globe and asked her to point out the USA and all the continents and a couple states which she visited. She was able to do it.

I don't think the title of this post is fair to Ebonics. Ebonics is a vernacular dialect; if you understand the dialect, someone speaking in it makes perfect sense to you.
Maybe only beauty queens could understand the logic behind her answer?

"America is a great land, a land of contrasts and a land of such amazing people. America is also a phenomenally large country, and with so much for people to focus on within america, perhaps some people tend to take less of a world view. Of course, it is undoubtedly true that education is the solution to prosperity, and I feel we should be focusing on education in the schools to ensure, at a younger age, we learn as much as possible about the world we live in".
OO - who thinks that perhaps she knows so little about education as she skipped a whole lot of hers chasing boys and doing her make-up
