Never Estimated a Fat Person

I dont know why but they are fast as hell. I've played with this chubby guy who just started playing tennis and he was like left to right like michael chang, but pushes the ball like a pusher. And also i watched my brother play double with two fat guy on the high school game and yet still fast and my brother lost.
Have anyone noticed or what? I guess they want to lose some pound quick or so.

A lot of fat people can hit the ball really hard because they can put more weight into their shots. :-o ;)

Re-read the post, that was not the point. He said the fat guy was a pusher, but really fast on his feet. Nothing about a ball smacking 200+ pounds hulk.

Yeah, I have a friend who's a lot quicker than his size would suggest. He plays soccer and can run side to side all day. He also hits a lot of junk balls which makes it very frustrating to play with him.

I think it has more to do with the reading of the game and anticipation. If they have a good tennis brain then weight doesn't matter all that much.

I play with a guy that is fat too. He's fast as hell and really, really quick at the net. He slices to me just so he could run down shots that I smack back. He says that he has a good first step and is quick all due to playing ping-pong.

And here I am trying to stay lean and trim to help with my footwork.

Maybe I should do the opposite? :)

I'm guessing these guys already have good footwork and anticipation before they gained some extra pounds.

Thanks,
eagle

I doubt he is really fast. with fat players i just use angles with topspin and i wrong foot them when they come out of the corners. always works. fat people meaning people who are >120% ideal body weight

Yes, I know. I was making a different comment about the tennis ability of fat people. I am allowed to do that, aren't I? The title of this thread is - "Never Estimated a Fat Person", isn't it?

You're absolutely right BreakPoint, I hate it when people like Shabazza feel the "need" to correct other posters because of poor logic.

Two things to remember when playing a fat guy. Move him around and hit behind him. It's much harder for him to change direction once all his momentum is going the other direction. Guarantee you he'll gas sooner or later. Work for me everytime. :)

when your fat your legs get strong, and that helps your tennis, but of course it hurts your tennis also, but you need strong legs to play good tennis

Ditto. I have been attending the 45's USTA Clay Court Championships, and the #1 seed is a pudgy (spelling??) guy. I know this sounds funny, but he moves like the wind. The guy is always in great position to hit the next shot.

I didn't know you could 'estimate' people...

Maybe he was estimating the fat guys weight?

But more than likely it was just another "AceofBaseizm". If you read some of his other posts you will see a pattern of this. At first I was annoyed over it, now I just laugh at the errors.

I think there are two reasons:

1. They have their minds set on getting to each ball. Most people just give up but this larger person may have their mind set that they will get to the ball. Mental determination!

2. Body weight can help you move faster in a direction once you get going. Momentum!

in my humble opinion, if a "horizontally challenged" person can chase down the balls then his opponent is not hitting the balls hard enough.
