I have read up on the book on which the movie is based, and that has tempered my enthusiasm for the film.

The book does not have an ending you would expect, and I am hoping the film does not go in that direction.

I saw Vincent Price's version from 1964 called the last man on earth. Vincent was the only non vampire type because he was bitten by a bat and became immune to the infection. I wonder if Will Smith's character will have the same cause of immunity.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I heard that, in the movie, Will Smith is immune to the virus because of his AB bloodtype. And, that's why he figures that 2% of the world population must still be alive because of they also have the same bloodtype.

Yeah I read the book too.

WTF was up with the ending?

I really didn't like the ending of the book either.

I became a bit bored with Will Smith saving the world again and again. I am going to wait for this movie as a rental.

^Acting wise he was best in Six Degrees of Separation. Anyways, I am Legend seems like a very exciting movie.

Well you won't have to worry about that if they keep the same ending in the book. I wonder if the movie will keep the ending the same or change it for Hollywood?

Thanks a lot, goob. What a spoiler! If it's the same ending as in the Vincent Price movie, I won't like it too much. I have a feeling it might be like that because of that dog.

Now I'm curious (as I haven't read the book). I will still wait for rental though - hint please. Spoiler? Come on....

Tell me that nothing bad happens to a dog in this movie (if so, I'm out).

It's not really a spoiler since I stated I don't know the ending of the movie. How often are film versions of books true to the book they were based on? Many things are often changed including plot lines and endings. Since you already know the ending to a previous Movie version by Vincent Price, you already know one of the possible endings. That ending is not exactly the way it was in the book BTW :p

Thanks a lot, goob! You did it again.

Ok whatever- no point in arguing. If somehow you could deduce the ending to movie which I haven't seen and the book which you haven't read from my my comments don't bother reading the book or see the movie.

I'm not arguing, homey. Just messin with you a bit, but tell me this; is that VP movie similar to the book?

In Hollywood? I'd say oh, about 99% of the time. The exception to this is the Titanic (there were books on this as well), but I'm sure if they could have gotten away with it, the ship wouldn't have sunk. ;)

Goob, I want you to tell me if anything bad happens to a dog! I can deal with pretty much anything, but I draw the line at animals (portrayed) to be hurt or worse.

Wait! Don't stay away from a perfectly good movie just because of that. Just tell yourself, it's just a movie and that dog is actually living a good life.

I know that now there is no harming of animals during the filming but I have a problem watching that on the screen. If you were to give me a hint when I can expect it to happen then I could use that as a good time to take a bathroom break. ;)

HMMM. From the trailer, it looks like the zombies got him, but in the VP movie, it was different.

Oh, there are zombies in this movie? I really need to read fiction more often. They always go for the intestines. Thanks for the head's up! LOL.

Well, I will probably give it a go. In a very well lit room, during the day with someone else. ;)

Considering how bad movies have been lately, I'm actually excited by this one. Tried reading the screenplay, couldn't get through it. But basically, any movie about a man being isolated, like that Tom Hanks movie, I'm in. Although Omega Man kind of sucked.

I liked Omega Man, though the groovy 60's vibe-language sounds dated now and the ending is kinda lame. I like the premise and the story line, though. Anything Will Smith makes is gonna be chock-full of special effects, so I expect a heavy dose of CG, light on the dialogue and/or human acting.

BTW, Will Smith did a tour of US military bases in the Tokyo area last week and I heard him interviewed on the local Armed Forces Radio station-in person he seems like a genuinely nice guy (as opposed to "Hollywood" nice guy).

Early on in the movie, they have this really wide shot of the city, and in the distance, you can see a car driving down the highway. At least you could in the DVD copy my friend had.

Yeah, he really does seem like a nice guy. I pray he doesn't become a scientologist. I read he's planning on making a Karate Kid remake, trying to get Stephen Chow to helm it. I'm just glad him and his son aren't doing The Road. For some reason, after I read that book I was thinking of ways Hollywood would mess it up and he and his son came immediately to mind.

I never noticed that-and I've seen the film around 3 times!

His wife would beat him silly if he tried to become a scientologist! Despite him being a good chap and all, I'm not crazy about his films-they make a ton of money, but those CG-oriented films leave me cold. When I leave the theatre I think to myself, "This shiate is worse than cotton candy. It really is 'junk food for the brain'." I'll probably see this one though, 'cause it's a good story.

Found a website talking about the Omega Man goof.

About Will's CGI heavy movies, yeah, I used to think he was the luckiest man in Hollywood. I couldn't understand why he would get so much credit for being in event movies that were sure bet blockbusters. You could have Dustin Diamond play his role in Independence Day and it would have killed at the box office. It was all about seeing the White House get blasted. Ditto for Men in Black. But for whatever reason, his supposed box office appeal is undeniable, I think it was Hitch that convinced me. I couldn't believe that did so well.

Have none of you people seen The Pursuit of Happiness?
THAT is Will Smith's best film, in my opinion...
Really shows his depth as an actor...

That was a good movie.
You're right about that movie showing the depth of Will Smith's acting skills.

Any similarities to "Last Man on Earth" and "The Omega Man" are purely intentional as they were both based on the same book, "I am Legend".

Pretty Good

I thought the movie was okay - a solid "B".

The Good:
  • Neville's (Smith's) isolation and relationship with his dog was well done.
  • Empty/overgrown city was believable.
  • Little details - like him sprinkling vinegar to cover his scent and using several vehicles, all packed for escape, were impressive.
The Bad:
  • Too much CGI.
  • Was the opening scene with the cherry Mustang a bit too obviously a Ford product placement?
  • They started to develop the "infected" as more than just mindless monsters but then stopped abruptly.
  • "Neat" ending rather than the "twist" one of the book.

21 mistakes in Omega Man...geez! I saw Legend last night and didn't catch any obvious gaffs-movie production is way slicker than it was 40 years ago.

There are questions, though, that beg to be asked (or else, they don't)...like, how does a Lt. Col in the Army-even a a bio war scientist-end up living in what is obviously a multi-million dollar townhouse, adjacent to Washington Square Park? I didn't know the Army paid so well these days, though God knows they're gonna have to start if they expect to retain anyone who's worth a damn. Would the military actually DO bio war stuff in the middle of a major metropolitan area? But this is just me nitpickin'...

The film was entertaining, though it could have been beefed up a bit, and I would have loved to see a back story on the "leader" of the mutants. The Legend mutants were considerably more capable than those in the Omega Man-who were portrayed as bug-eyed, black robed, jive-talking monks in Ray Bans. The Omega Man's total budget probably wouldn't cover I Am Legend's catering bill.

For me*...

The Good: CGI making the city seem deserted = awesome

The Bad: CGI making the vampires look like Golem (from LOTR) on steroids = WTF?

I liked the movie up until the last 15 minutes or so. Also, if you have a dog (like me) you will cry.

*And yes, I did read the book before the movie came out. No, not like right before the movie came out, but like 6 months ago since there was a "buy three, get one free" sale going on at Border's.
