This diet is killing me!

I've been measuring my calories since Monday and I found that I was previously taking in around 4500 calories per day. Well, I've cut back to 2800 calories and I'm so hungry! Yes, 2800 is more than enough for the average man, but I'm pretty active with a good deal of muscle mass so it is a deficit for me. I need to drop some bodyfat and excess water, but I need to control this hunger! Day 3 and I almost want to give up! Give me some encouragement, TW posters!

Didn't you tell me in a previous post of mine that you were a personal trainer? doesn't that mean that you work out a decent ammount so you need the extra calories? Oh and by the way when i was dieting i always chewed gum to get rid of hunger it helped out alot just get double bubble and bring around aton of pieces with you if you like flavor in your gum haha

I was a personal trainer, but I don't work out a great deal. I do dips and pullups around twice a week at the park and I ride a bike about 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week. I get plenty of upper and lower body right there. Do I expend more calories than the average person? Probably. Do I need to take in 4500 calories a day? Definitely not.

that sucks bro, i eat what i want and i still cant get phat, give me some encouragement to eat more junk food!

Same here. The curse of the azn matabilism :( Personally, i would be happy to gain 10 pounds in a week right now >_>

I went from 107 in Feb to 105 now in Sept. Take note that i'm a 16 year old male

TAD, I never said I couldn't eat more than the average person. If anything, my diet is more calorie dense than an average person's diet. The problem is that I'm used to taking in way too many calories and that's why I need to cut back.

Please stop whining. You've turned your body into a ghoulish distortion with double the carbon footprint of most people, making you an environmental hazard as well, and now plead for sympathy so you can cut back to a calorie load that would keep two diabetics in good shape. How about a little humility?

Drink lots of water. Visualize your goal often. Keep lots of good low-calorie snacks around to give you a sense of satiety when you feel hungry. Split your meals up... half now, half later. Make this a lifestyle change... no exceptions for going out of town, visitors, holidays, etc. Commit to it.

Sometimes it's also important to notice the hunger and do nothing about it. Get more comfortable with that feeling, and learn to think about other things. Feeling a little hungry isn't the worst thing that you can feel. It's fine.

Just out of curiousity, as one who is also trying to shed a few pounds, how did you arrive at the 2800 cal/day figure?

Rickson doesn't need any information on how to lose weight or how to cut the calories or how many calories to ingest each day. He knows more about that stuff than 99% of the posters here. What he needs is some motivation! Rickson, what's the part of your body that you're most wanting to change? Your muffin-top or your cankles? Both, by the way, are embarrasing for somebody who's not used to looking like you do.

Diets suck, but keep with it man.
keep some healthy snacks around when you get hungry.

Eat 5-6 small meals a day, but break down the foods by the calories you need.

I know you want to shed excess fluid, but you actually need to drink a lot of fluids. Most of the time we mistake our bodies need for fluids as a need for food. Water is key. Tisanes or herbal non caffinated teas will also work. Milk is good, and give a feeling of satisfaction due to minimal calories but with added protein and fat. Stay away from too much coffee, tea, or soda. They will dehydrate you and caffiene will speed up you metabolism. *But also remember too much water is bad too b/c you can decrease your nutrient/ion level.
As your body adjusts the extra water will equalize.

That site rocks!

Rickson, more water, your cells are holding water because they feel dehydrated and your body is "feeling" hungry because not only have you cut some calories, you have cut your sugar intake. Your brain is just sending the usual signals. You will get used to it and then your appetite will adjust and get fuller quicker.

How tall are you? 2800 Cals is a lot. I am 5'9 and 165, but really muscular. My bodyfat% is under 10 now. I eat 5-6 small meals a day and my metabolism is cranking. I eat under 2000 cals a day, probably around 1600 or so.

Eat every 2 hours and drink water.

Your body will get used to it - it's just complaining because it doesn't want to change!

You may know this, but in those 2800 calories, try to ensure that you are eating a lot of protein, and make sure your snacks are all high in fiber. The fiber slows down digestion which will mean you are less hungry, as well as your body getting a better shake at absorbing the good stuff you're eating, meaning less deficiencies.

A great snack for this is a cup of strawberries and cottage cheese. You get a sugar rush, fiber from the strawberries, and protein from the cottage cheese. These types of volume snacks with relatively low calories are key to me in dieting. I seek foods that give me nutrition that I can eat a lot of.

Another example is a spinach salad. You can basically eat a whole bag of spinach if you want. Eat as big a portion as you can with only 2tbls of dressing shaken to evenly coat. Sprinkle some almonds or brazil nuts on for even more protein.

It's these kind of snacks which will help you a lot more than sugary granola bars or some of these other "smart" snacks. Real food is important if you only get 2,800 - it means the 2,800 has to be good stuff.

Don't know if this helps - hope it did.

I hear a lot about cottage cheese... but I can't stand the stuff! Would yogurt be an acceptable alternate? What else? Thanks!

Thanks for the tips, everyone. As fantom said, I do know more about dieting than most people, but the problem was that I was previously in my bulking stage which can be hazardous to your health. As for cotrill's question, I estimate my calories on non labeled food and read the labels on the foods with them. My estimates are usually within 200 calories which is better than most people can estimate. If I find that my pants aren't getting looser after a week, I cut the calories by another 200 per day. I definitely don't go by the scale, I go by pants fit which is what most people should do. There was a time that I dropped 2 inches on my waist and my pants were falling off me, but I lost zero lbs. on the scale so as you can tell, the scale is one of the least accurate ways of measuring bodyfat loss.

This is my breakdown so far for the week:

Monday: 4000 KCal
Tuesday: 2700 KCal
Wednesday: 3500 KCal
Thursday: 1100 so far and counting

So what do you all use as calorie rich foods? Since I've cut sugars out of my diet and dropped my intake of breads and pasta, I've had to eat like a horse to get 1800 calories per day. I eat a lot of meats, fruits, and veggies, along with drinking milk, but I still seem to average 1600 calories per day.

I struggle with hunger everyday, Rickson, or at least hunger for the junky foods I so desperately want. I live for food. So I can relate.

But I also want to look good, so it's constant torturous struggle. I think the chewing gum advice is good, but here's something else I use for motivation:

I say something to myself like: "Would I rather eat that second jelly donut or would I rather be able to date attractive and/or young women?"

Whether it's accurate or not, I tend to think the more fit I am, the more women I can attract. So every donut lowers my value on the market.

Anyway, that's one thing that helps with my motivation, so give it a whirl...

Life according to heycal -

It's all about the donuts. I don't eat extra donuts so I can get hot chicks.

That is deep, man.

What are your deep philosophical musings on the weighty subject of calorie counting?

Nothing too deep, really.

It's simple. Burn more calories than you take in. Sounds ridiculously simple, but that's the only way to lose weight.

My main motivation is that I feel better when my weight is where it's supposed to be. And I've gotten used to eating a relatively healthy diet. I've avoided eating fried foods for so long that now if I have some, I can't eat much of them because it doesn't taste that good to me. I would have trouble eating an entire donut because it would taste too sweet and sugary to me....and I also hate the sugar rush / crash feeling.

Eat a balanced diet, exercise 5x per week, don't over indulge in sweets, fried foods, junk food, etc. Don't just do cardio, lift some weights to build muscle mass.....it will help you burn calories more efficiently...and if you're a woman it can help prevent osteoporosis later in life.

That's about it.

I use this calculator

It helped figure out my body percentage and lean muscle mass (tape estimates of course). The site also helps give how much water you should be drinking a day. For me its ~2800mL, or 4 bottles of arrowhead water. When I started about a month ago, I weighed in at 153 lbs with a 34-35 inch waist, with about 19% of body fat (by using the calculator). Now I have about a 31.5 inch waist and 141 lbs and have 15% body fat.

I should be eating 2000-2100 calories a day, so my deficit is around 1500 calories. (of course kcals.)
Working my way down to 10% for the ladies ya know :)

You only eat 1600 per day? Wow. That is really low. If you eat 5 -6 meals
a day that means each meal is like 250 - 320 calories each. Those are
pretty small meals. How do you keep from being hungry? I think I eat
about twice as many calories as you, and can barely maintain my weight.

Remember, I said that I estimate within 200 KCal and that it's better than most people's estimates. That means that PP is definitely underestimating his calories. Most people are off by 500 or more so his calorie count is more likely to be 2100-2600 than 1600.

Good pt. I may also be overestimating or be off in my own estimates as well.
I eat fairly healthy, but I just eat larger portions and basically eat whenever
I am hungry, which unfortunately is throughout the day.

Don't worry Rickson, I almost have the money together to get my Mexican weight loss center up and running (can't get approval in the USA-that darn FDA). We stick you in a giant room where the entire floor is a giant treadmill, so you'll constantly move. Then we feed you a strict diet of water, green vegetables, diuretics and laxatives...day and night, night and day. Only $2000/week and I GUARANTEE RESULTS!!!

find filling foods that are low in calories.

vegetables. get used to eating an extra portion/cup/big bowl of veggies with every meal. this will make a huge difference in terms of feeling satisfied. even if it's a can of green beans.

whole grains. oatmeal (which you may call porridge depending where you're from) is fabulous bang for buck. not just the boring kind but the pre-flavored packs you add hot water to. i eat these whenever i feel hungry between meals, and they have like 120 calories in them (and are pretty good for you, too).

and, strangely enough, i find eating some fatty foods to be a good tactic, since i feel like i've actually eaten. a current favorite in our house is salad greens with smoked salmon and a sliced, boiled egg with olive oil. weird i know but somehow it totally hits the spot.

btw, if no one suggested, try fitday dot com, you can track your calories there.

Ricky, 2800 calories a day and you are still finding yourself hungry? My suggestion for a daily diet is as follows:

Breakfast:

3 eggs (any style)
2 cups instant unsalted oatmeal
1/2 cup frozen (or fresh) blueberries
1 cup unsweetened orange juice

Morning Snack:

2 cups low fat vanilla yogurt
1 medium apple

Lunch:

1 whole wheat bagel
1 medium tomato
3 slices lean turkey bacon
2 tbsp. fat free mayo

Salad:

4 cups iceberg lettuce
1 carrot
1/2 cup green pepper
1/2 cup bean sprouts
1 tomato
1/2 cup snow peas
1/4 cup lemon juice

2 cups unsalted tomato juice

Afternoon Snack:

1 Heart Healthy fat free tortilla
1/2 can unsalted canned tuna (packed in water)
1 cup iceberg lettuce
Diced green onion to taste
2 tbsp fat free mayo

Dinner:

8 oz. boneless skinless chicken breast
2 cups brown rice (soy or tabasco to taste)
3 cups boiled asparagus

2 cups unsalted tomato juice

Dessert:

1/2 cup frozen mango sorbet

Evening Snack:

1/2 cup low fat unsalted cottage cheese
2 cups watermelon

The caloric count for this day's food is 2780 (given minimal marginal error). There is a lot of food here and if you are planning on working out more, just drink a protein shake for the extra energy.
