thanks for the heads up. different cultures have different acquired food tastes and that one in the vid probably isn't that different (taste wise) for western cultures. if you really want to see different then watch Andrew Zimmerm on Travel Channel. when he can't eat it, you know it's something else...:-?

That lilly livered, chicken hearted sissy? "Looky here... I'm eating crickets!! HARDCORE!!"

And what is the point of this thread?? "Oh god, look at all that gelled pigblood!!"?? I eat Filipino food often and you ought to try it before you bash it.

Well Zimmern chickened out of durian while Bourdain enjoys it lol. Also if you watch Zimmern's shows it's always not safe to assume that whatever he shows is true to the rest of the country. That being said, Bourdain just finished shoots in the Philippines a couple of months ago so his Phil episode should be coming out February maybe. Let's see if he tried "chocolate meat"....

Not weird at all. Dinuguan is one of the Filipino dishes that gets a cold shoulder from the Americans in a Filipino get together (well Im in the northeast, they might be a little braver in the West or so). They usually go for the safer lumpia or pansit.

Food is often more about textures than taste. Some cultures prefer crunchy foods. Others prefer soft foods. Think tacos versus noodles.

I remember an Andrew Zimmern show from Minnesota (where he ate lutefisk). He sat down with friends at a fancy restaurant in St. Paul. One of the dishes was bull testicles. And to his credit, one of his friends said something like, "Some people may get squeamish about eating this. But put it in a sausage, and those same people will say it's delicious."

Maybe they were from San Francisco.

I don't think the poster of the video was saying this was a bad dish. I think he was trying to state that most older Filipino parents used the excuse It's chocolate meat. When in fact no coco beans were used. I think we just need to call it as it is, Dinuguan, a mixture of pork products.

In all honesty, I rather have Dinuguan than Balut.

One of my friends had a BBQ/tennis feast just outside
the courts. Incredible. Him and his wife brought an
ENTIRE pig, massive amounts of beer, deserts, veggies,
etc. A truly amazing day of feasting, drinking, tennis,
drinking, more tennis, more eating & drinking and a little
more tennis.

although it's not too eye-pleasing, it's actually pretty good. i've only had it once, which was recently when i visited the philippines, and i didn't think it was that bad.

i remember balut was one of those nasty things people had to eat on fear factor. i was offended! ;)

not to brag or anything, but i think that filipinos throw the best bbq's and feasts. the pig is called lechon, and even though it's really fatty, i never skip on it when offered.

It not so much the yoke or the whites. It all depends on how mature the duck gets. Once i see the feathers or a semi solid beak, I draw the line on eating it.

Most people associate Filipino food with lumpia
